"Muscles you need to play hockey, so it's been tough," Fontaine said. "It's definitely not the way you want to start the season. Coming into camp, you feel ready, you feel healthy, but I'm trying to stay positive." He recorded nine goals and 31 points in 71 games last season.

Justin Fontaine suffered a charley horse and a sore side when he was kneed by Columbus' David Clarkson just 63 seconds into preseason action on Thursday night.

Clarkson extended his knee into Fontaine's right leg, but the Minnesota forward stayed in the game until he was hit again in the second period. Fontaine isn't expected to practice on Friday and he wasn't scheduled to play Saturday, but his injuries aren't believed to be serious.

Fontaine played just 10 shifts totaling 6:55 without making an impact on the score sheet in Game One on Friday night. Both Fontaine's prognosis and the player who will take Fontaine's spot in the lineup is still unclear, but it'll likely be either Ryan Carter or Sean Bergenheim's turn to fill in on the wing.
