Viktor Fasth made 39 saves in the Oilers’ 5-4 shootout loss to the Canucks on Saturday night.

Oct 11 - 10:29 AM

Viktor Fasth played well despite the loss Thursday night, stopping 21-23 shots the Canucks sent his way.

Fasth was hung out to dry on both goals. Nick Bonino was left all alone in front of the net while short-handed, as four Oilers curled into the corner chasing the puck midway through the second. Four minutes later during a line change, Alex Edler was left unattended in the slot while on a 4-on-3 break from the red line. In other words, when Fasth was helped, he was a perfect 21-21.

The Edmonton Oilers used six goaltenders last season, but GM Craig Mactavish team believes their situation is a lot steadier with Viktor Fasth and Ben Scrivens battling for starts come the fall.

Fasth has gone 20-11-8 with a .915 save percentage and 2.40 goals against average so far in his NHL career. At 32 years old, the Swede has less NHL experience than Scrivens who is only 27 years old. But neither have a considerable advantage over the other, as Scrivens has gone just 27-30-12 with a .917 save percentage and 2.69 goals against average. Both Fasth and Scrivens will be given plenty of opportunity to play this coming season.
