Mattias Ekholm set up Mike Fisher's triple overtime winner during Thursday's Game 4 over San Jose.

After rushing back onto the ice in an effort to keep a matchup, Ekholm immediately jumped back into the play. He fired a shot on net that took Martin Jones out of position, which Fisher was able to slam home for the win. It was Ekholm's second assist of the game, giving him four this postseason and seven points.

Mattias Ekholm is tied for the league lead in the postseason in goals among defensemen.

His three markers has him tied with John Carlson, Alex Goligoski and Duncan Keith. Ekholm has also contributed one assist and 15 shots in the playoffs. All three of his goals have either tied the game or put the Predators in the lead. "I'm just trying to do the most with the ice time I get," Ekholm said. "Getting a lot of confidence in the ice time I'm getting from the coaches. They're putting me out there in all sorts of situations and I'm just trying to make the most of it."

The Preds have dug themselves quite a hole, as they're down 2-0 in the series. Fortunately for them, both losses have come on the road, which means they can get right back into the series with two good showings on home ice. Ekholm's goal at the 12:56 mark of the third period tied the game at one, but Joe Pavelski scored just minutes later to restore San Jose's lead. Ekholm has three goals and four points in nine games this postseason.

"We all know what kind of position we're in," said Predators defenseman Mattias Ekholm. "That's what's got to get better — our battle level, our urgency and our attitude to win games. That's the position we're in right now. We need the points. It doesn't have to be pretty all the time. This was a greasy win for us."

His new deal has an annual average value of $3.75 million and his current one has an AAV of just over $1 million. Ekholm would have been eligible for restricted free agency in the summer. Mattias Ekholm scored a beauty of a goal from his butt, opening Tuesday night's scoring on Carey Price of Montreal. The Predators would go on to win 3-2 in overtime.

Mid way through the first period, Ekholm intercepted a blind Tomas Plekanec clearance in-stride and proceeded to bum-rush the Canadiens' net. He utilized a roller hockey move to split the defense and scored on his own rebound from his butt. Go find a highlight. It was his first goal since Jan. 17th, a span of 28 games, and he now has six goals and 16 points this season.

Mattias Ekholm scored the overtime winner in Saturday's 5-4 win over Minnesota.

Ekholm picked a great time to score his first goal of the season. "Always in OT you want to be the clutch guy and score that goal," Ekholm said. "Just to get the two points; big start for us on this little road trip before Christmas." The 24-year-old has been more of a solid defensive presence in the NHL. He has seven points and a plus-8 rating in 31 games this season.
