The Sabres announced today that they've assigned young defenseman Johan Larsson to the Rochester Americans of the AHL.

The Buffalo Sabres have placed Johan Larsson (head) on the injured reserve list.

Larsson had four assists in 28 games with Buffalo last season. He was far more effective offensively in the minors with 15 goals and 41 points in 51 contests.

Johan Larsson is believed to be dealing with concussion issues after he was on the receiving end of an elbow on Sunday in preseason action.

He's expected to be sidelined for about 10 days. Larsson was on the bubble to make Buffalo's roster out of camp, but now he's likely to start the year with AHL Rochester once he's ready to return.

The Sabres AHL affiliate in Rochester was invited to take part in the festivities. That's a lot of traveling for the 21-year-old forward. Larsson skated with Linus Omark and Marcus Foligno against Minnesota.

Johan Larsson is expected to get into Buffalo's lineup for Friday's home opener with Ville Leino sidelined indefinitely.

He's likely to play between Tyler Ennis and Steve Ott. "He's going to get a good opportunity," coach Ron Rolston said. "I like everything about him. His attitude, the way he works, preparation. He's a good detail player. This will give him a good opportunity to play with some good players and show us what he can do. It's a good thing. He's ready." It will mark his first game in a Sabres uniform after he was a healthy scratch in Wednesday's loss to Detroit.

He joined enforcer John Scott as Buffalo's probable odd men out to start the season. Sabres coach Ron Rolston was impressed with Larsson at training camp, so he should get his chance to play soon if it doesn't come right away.

Johan Larsson enjoyed a very good game Thursday in Buffalo's exhibition win over Carolina.

He recorded two goals and won 12 of 17 faceoffs. "I thought he was arguably our best forward," coach Ron Rolston said. "He was on tonight. He was good in the circle. Those are things that we're looking for out of centermen, obviously, in the faceoff circle, but he's got a lot of grit to his game." Larsson has played in all three preseason games so far and could end up as Buffalo's third-line center following camp.
