The Capitals have brought Mattias Sjogren back from Sweden.

GM George McPhee was not very happy when Sjogren bolted the Caps’ AHL affiliate in Hershey for his homeland Sweden earlier this season. Suddenly, the 24-year-old forward may find himself dressing for NHL playoff games as he is under contract to the Caps. Sjogren is not eligible to play for Hershey.

Mattias Sjogren will play the reminder of the 2011-12 campaign in Sweden.

He was beat out for a roster spot at training camp and has recorded five points in 19 games with Washington's AHL affiliate in Hershey this season. Sjogren has a clause in his contract that allows him to return to Europe and he has chosen to exercise it, much to Capitals GM George McPhee's chagrin. "It's probably a mistake. He needs to develop here and wasn't prepared to make the commitment to do so," McPhee said. "When we signed him, we told him we had a job available and promised him we'd give him a look this year. His training camp wasn't good enough to keep him at the start of the year and he was developing OK, but I guess he got impatient and decided to go home. And if you're going to quit on us you might as well go."

Mattias Sjogren has been sent down to the minors.

He will look to develop his game at the AHL level after nearly cracking Washington's opening day roster at training camp. It will mark his first playing experience in North America after coming over from the Swedish Elite League.

Mattias Sjogren lost a tooth in the opening minutes of Washington's development camp.

Sjogren suffered the injury when he was accidentally hit in the mouth by a goaltender's stick. He had to see a dentist Tuesday morning, but was back to practice in the afternoon and should be able to participate in the remainder of the Capitals' camp. After spending the 2010-11 season in the Swedish Elite League, he will compete for a bottom-six forward spot in training camp.

Mattias Sjogren thinks he could start the 2011-12 season as Washington's third or fourth line center.

"I know it’s going to be tough to compete for one of those two spots," Sjogren said. "I know I have to be humble, but I hope I can get a chance to prove what I can do." Sjogren inked a two-year, entry-level contract with Washington after helping Team Sweden get a silver medal in the 2011 World Championships. Sjogren had seven goals and 24 points in 51 Swedish Elite League games last season.
