Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is projected to play with Jesse Puljujarvi and Jussi Jokinen when the regular season begins.
Oilers coach Todd McLellan said playing Nugent-Hopkins alongside Connor McDavid could be an option, but for now it's the team's intention to continue playing RNH at center. "I feel comfortable with him at center. I trust him down the center ice position," said McLellan. "I think he's going to gave a tremendous year. He knows that he's allowed to take a little more risk now and and look for a little more offense. There has to be others on that line he trusts on that defensively at some given point. But I would say never rule out anything, we did have him on the wing at the World Cup last year and he was very good at it, but I think his home position right now is center ice and that's where we'll start him." Ryan Nugent-Hopkins continues to struggle on faceoffs in his career.

He has a 43.3 percent success rate on faceoffs during his six-year career and the closest he has made it to the 50-percent mark came in 2014-15 when he won 46.0 percent. Nugent-Hopkins' struggles in the circles and his troubles offensively could result in the Oilers looking for help at center. "Nuge is a tremendous player, a detail player. There's more offense to him and that'll be the message we deliver to him," said coach Todd McLellan. He recorded 18 goals and 43 points in the regular season followed by no goals and four assists in the playoffs.
May 15 - 1:32 PM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins recorded an assist in the Oilers' 4-3 2OT loss to Anaheim in Game 5 Friday night.

Nugent-Hopkins didn't get a single point in the six-game first round series. However, he's heated up in the second round with four assists in five contests thus far. He had 18 goals and 43 points in 82 regular season contests.
May 6 - 4:50 AM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has produced two assists in his last two games.

He didn't have a point in six games in Round 1 of the playoffs against San Jose, but he has two points in two outings versus Anaheim in Edmonton's second-round series. This is the first time that Nugent-Hopkins has been in the NHL playoffs and he appears to be getting more comfortable.
Apr 29 - 11:05 AM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has produced three goals and six assists in the last nine games.

Edmonton's second line has been productive down the stretch with 14 goals during that nine-game span. The trio of RNH, Jordan Eberle and Milan Lucic will be counted on to supply more secondary scoring in the playoffs behind Connor McDavid's line.
Apr 11 - 6:41 PM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored two goals Tuesday night as the Oilers dropped a 6-4 contest to the Kings.

Nugent-Hopkins gave the Oilers a two-goal lead in the first with his score at the 11:13 mark. That is how they entered the locker room for the first intermission, but the same team did not return. The Kings scored three unanswered goals in the second before Nugent-Hopkins tied the game at 16:46 in the third. He was the dim ray of hope for the Oilers Tuesday.
Apr 5 - 1:18 AM

The Edmonton Oilers are still in the hunt for top spot in the Pacific Division.

Not many people expected the Oilers to even make the playoffs this season, so the fact that they can still take top spot in their division is pretty impressive. Heading into Monday's action, they find themselves two points behind the first-place Ducks. "We’re right in the fight right now," said forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins "To win the division is obviously our goal. We’re just going to keep striving for that. At this point in the season, to be (challenging) for first is definitely a huge confidence boost for us. It’s not done, but from last year or years past it’s a huge jump for us."
Mar 27 - 10:57 AM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has enjoyed his time against the Colorado Avalanche lately, including contributing to the Edmonton Oilers' 4-1 win on Saturday.

After collecting two assists against Colorado on March 23, RNH scored a goal and an assist on Saturday. He had gone the previous three games without a point and has seen somewhat irregular production lately, with a challenging run of games against California teams (both at home and on the road) beginning on Tuesday.
Mar 26 - 12:55 AM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins found the back of the net in Edmonton's 4-3 victory on Wednesday.

That was Nugent-Hopkins' 30th game of the season. He's on pace to get 45 points this season after recording 34 points in 55 contests in 2015-16. That's not bad, but it's less than you would expect from a former first overall pick.
Feb 23 - 7:09 AM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins does not have a point in his last six games.

Nugent-Hopkins has 11 goals and 26 points in 56 games, not the best stats in the league from a former first overall pick (It's fortunate that it is not the worst either as former teammate Nail Yakupov has only six points). Frustration may be setting in as Nugent-Hopkins had seven penalty minutes which included a fight with Vinnie Hinostroza of Chicago. He is not worth owning in any league unless your pool requires you to take a player with a hyphenated name.
Feb 12 - 9:03 AM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored a goal in Edmonton's 4-0 win over Anaheim Wednesday night.

Nugent-Hopkins has recorded at least a point in five of his last six games. That gives him 11 goals and 26 points in 50 contests this season.
Jan 26 - 11:32 AM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is on a three-game point streak.

Nugent-Hopkins also has recorded a point in four of his last five contests. He's up to nine goals and 23 points in 47 games this season.
Jan 19 - 8:38 AM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins found the back of the net in Edmonton's 4-3 win over Boston on Thursday.

Nugent-Hopkins has only been held off the scoresheet once in his last four games. He's up to eight goals and 19 points in 40 contests in 2016-17.
Jan 6 - 10:54 AM

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, underachieving this season, scored in overtime Monday night to give the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 victory over the Blues in St. Louis.

It was only Nugent-Hopkins' sixth goal of the season but the Oilers will take it. Connor McDavid assisted on the goal, his 28th helper of the season. The Oilers trailed 1-0 and 2-1 before Patrick Maroon tied the game 2-2 at 5:47 of the third period. Maroon's goal was his ninth of the season. Also scoring for Edmonton was Tyler Pitlick (eighth). Leon Draisaitl assisted on the Pitlick and Maroon goals and now has 16 on the season.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is seeing third line time with Taylor Beck and Tyler Pitlick.

Nugent-Hopkins has only five goals and 15 points in 33 games this season, not something you would expect out of a number one overall selection. Perhaps all the shoulder problems he has had early in his career has taken its toll as those are serious injuries for hockey players, or perhaps he just hasn't panned out like he should have. We at Rotoworld thought the Oilers should have drafted Adam Larsson first in 2011 but they took Nugent-Hopkins. They probably regret it as it cost them Taylor Hall in the off-season and we are sure that they would rather have had Hall and Larsson rather than Nugent-Hopkins and Larsson on the current squad.
