Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is expected to be sidelined for the next five-to-six weeks.
The Oilers have termed Nugent-Hopkins' issue as simply being upper-body, but he's reportedly dealing with a bruised sternum and cracked ribs. This is a particularly unfortunate development given that Nugent-Hopkins had been one of the few positives in Edmonton's season thus far. He has 16 goals and 31 points in 46 contests this season. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (upper body) has been moved to the injured reserve list.

Nugent-Hopkins was injured when he took a hard hit from Brayden McNabb on Jan. 13. The good news is that it's not a concussion or a shoulder problem. The injury happened just before the Oilers' bye week so there is an outside chance that he won't end up missing any games over this ailment, but the fact that Edmonton placed Nugent-Hopkins on the IR list suggests that they probably expect him to miss at least Saturday's contest.

It appears Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is not dealing with a concussion after he took a hard hit from Brayden McNabb.

Instead, the Oilers' center is dealing with some bruising that is expected to subside by the time Edmonton's bye week comes to a close. Nugent-Hopkins has 31 points in 46 games this season, but has only two in his last eight games. The 24-year-old former first round pick has also been involved in trade speculation for the better part of the last year and inquiring teams will be pleased to know he isn't dealing with a concussion.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins took a hard hit in the second period from the Golden Knights Brayden McNabb and did not return.

It was unknown if the injury was to his shoulder where McNabb hit him or his head/neck which snapped back at the time of impact. Or both. Nugent-Hopkins had problems early in his NHL career with his shoulder that impeded his progress so we hope that he is okay. The 24-year-old has 16 goals and 31 points this season in 46 games. Consider him day-to-day for now. The Oilers only play four games in the next three weeks so this injury may not keep him out of many games.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has found the back of the net in three of his last four games.

At this point he has 14 goals and 25 points in 34 contests in 2017-18. That's pretty impressive when you consider that he finished with 18 markers last season and his career-high is 24 goals from 2014-15. He's currently on pace to score about 34 goals, but of course his current hot streak has skewed that somewhat. Pencil him in for 25-30 goals.

This might end up being a big season for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Nugent-Hopkins is a former first overall pick and showed a lot of potential in his rookie season by recording 52 points in 62 contests. Since then though he's declined offensively, to the point where he recorded just 18 goals and 43 points in 82 contests last season. He's doing far better in 2017-18 with eight goals and 14 points through 18 games. "That’s always been in him and I think it was there last year," said Oilers coach Todd McLellan. "We saw that at the World Cup. I really, really believed in this guy at the World Cup. He was excellent and I thought he was going to have a really big year. It didn’t quite go for him the way he wanted it to last year, but this year things are happening for him. He’s consistently doing it right at both ends of the rink and he’s getting rewarded with offence. I’m proud of him, happy for him. I hope it can continue as well."
