As the Hurricanes look to improve their defense, youngsters Ryan Murphy and Brett Bellemore could be options.
Murphy (48 points in the OHL) was the team's No. 1 draft pick in 2011, while Bellemore (13 points, 87 penalty minutes in the AHL) was a sixth rounder from 2007. "You either have to be a skating, puck-moving defenseman or you have to be a physical defenseman, general manager Jim Rutherford said. "We have some defensemen who are capable of playing physical and haven't done it and they have to do it if they want to play here." May 3 - 9:14 AM

Ryan Murphy has been sent back to his OHL team in Kitchener.

He was brought up from his junior club on an emergency basis due to injuries, but the Hurricanes will Tim Gleason and Jamie McBain back in the lineup Thursday night. In four games with Carolina, Murphy had no points, seven shots and a minus-4 rating while averaging just over 21 minutes of ice time.

Ryan Murphy has already played four games with Carolina during his emergency call-up from the OHL, so he understands that his NHL stint is close to coming to an end.

He may get to play in his fifth game on Thursday if the team doesn't get Tim Gleason, Joni Pitkanen or Jamie McBain back from injury, but after that he'll probably be returned to his junior team in Kitchener so that the first year of his entry-level deal isn't burned from his contract.
Feb 27 - 10:17 AM

Ryan Murphy played 24 minutes in his first game since being recalled by the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday.

Although Murphy admitted to being nervous his first few shifts, he seemed to settle down as the game went along. Murphy, the Canes' first-round pick in 2011, even saw a minute on the power play, which could help him gain fantasy relevancy. For now, he's not worth adding in most formats but is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Ryan Murphy has been recalled by Carolina on an emergency basis and he'll make his NHL debut Thursday night versus Winnipeg.

"I've had some butterflies since I found out the news, but it's a good thing and I'm happy and I'm excited to play," Murphy said after the morning skate. The Hurricanes made the decision to bring him from the OHL ranks due to injuries to defensemen Tim Gleason, Joni Pitkanen and Jamie McBain. He will be paired with Jay Harrison on the back end and it wouldn't be surprising to see him get a shot on the power play as well. In 46 games with the Kitchener Rangers this season, he has accounted for eight goals and 39 points.
Feb 21 - 3:15 PM

Ryan Murphy will be brought up from the OHL to play for the Hurricanes.

Carolina made the move after learning that Jamie McBain is also hurt on top of injuries to Joni Pitkanen and Tim Gleason.
Feb 20 - 7:00 PM

Ryan Murphy has been returned to the OHL Kitchener Rangers.

Murphy was taken with the 12th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He has four goals and 24 points in 33 games this season.
Jan 18 - 12:13 PM

The Carolina Hurricanes will take a look at prospect Ryan Murphy at training camp.

"I have nothing to lose right now," Murphy said. "I'm a 19-year-old guy; I'm still eligible to play junior for a couple of years, and I have nothing to lose. That's how I'm going to approach it. I'm going to play my own game, and at the end of the day, whether it's playing here or playing in Kitchener, I'm going to be happy." Both sides appear to be patient here, which is probably the right course of action since Murphy needs to improve on the defensive side of his game.
Jan 15 - 9:52 AM

Ryan Murphy will enter Team Canada's selection camp hoping that his third tryout will be the charm.

Murphy has been released at tryouts the past two years. He may have a bit of a leg up on the competition because Canada's head coach, Steve Spott, is also his bench boss with the OHL's Kitchener Rangers. "I'm probably going to be in a comfort zone," Murphy said referring to the situation. "I have a little bit of an advantage over others because he is my coach during the regular season, so I'm happy he got the job. He's a great coach and I'm just going to go out there and play the game I play in Kitchener." He is playing in his fourth season with the Rangers and has generated 22 points in 29 games this campaign.

2011 first-round picks Ryan Murphy and Matt Puempel each tallied a goal in Kitchener's 3-1 win against Sault Ste. Marie on Friday night.

Murphy, taken 12th by the Hurricanes, is a gifted offensive rearguard but has stumbled to begin the season with just 14 points in 18 games. He had 133 in 112 games over his last two OHL seasons prior to this one. Puempel, picked 24th by the Senators, is well on his way to a career high in goals as he has 14 on the year.

Ryan Murphy potted a goal in Kitchener's 5-3 triumph over Sarnia on Saturday night.

It was the empty-net variety, but it still counts on the stat sheet for his first goal of the season. The Hurricanes' first-round pick in 2011 has shown excellent offensive ability from the blueline, but has started off slowly in 2012, with just six points in 10 games. Senators prospect Matt Puempel also had an assist in the game to give him 10 points on the year.

Ryan Murphy had four assists in the Kitchener Rangers' 6-2 victory over the Oshawa Generals in OHL play.

After a slow start to the season, Murphy now has five points in nine games. He averaged more than a point-per-game in each of his last two OHL campaigns.

Hurricanes prospect Ryan Murphy was the "standout" player for Canada in its 6-5 loss in Game 3 of the junior hockey exhibition series with Russia.

The first-round pick in the 2011 draft had a goal and three assists."I thought he was great," Canadian coach Steve Spott said. "He dictated the play and had great legs here tonight and he battled at both ends of the rink and provided the offence that we need from him." The final game of the Russia-Canada Challange is Tuesday night, and Russia holds a 2-1 series lead.

Ryan Murphy suffered a concussion last Friday in the OHL after he was leveled behind his own goal on a vicious hit from Niagara IceDogs forward Tomas Kuhnhackl.

The Kitchener Rangers said that Murphy is in "complete shutdown mode." Kuhnhackl has been suspended indefinitely and further judgment is expected to come down on Tuesday. Murphy cracked Carolina's roster out of training camp, but was returned to the junior ranks without playing an NHL game.

Ryan Murphy has been returned to the OHL's Kitchener Rangers by Carolina.

The move makes perfect sense because he had watched the team's first four games as a healthy scratch despite making the roster out of training camp. "The fact he went beyond the start of the season with us as an 18-year-old defenseman is really exceptional and tells what we think of him," said GM Jim Rutherford. "He has a great future with us. We feel him staying with us an extra week and participating in practice and seeing regular-season games, getting a feel for the tempo of games and the tempo of practices, will help him this season and help in his development." He is definitely a player that keeper leagues owners should have their eye on for next season.
