Joel Armia said he was surprised to be traded by the Buffalo Sabres last season.
Armia was part of the trade that saw Evander Kane go to Buffalo. "Of course it was probably hard for me," the 22-year-old from Pori, Finland said Saturday. "A little bit harder because it was my first trade and that doesn’t happen in Europe a lot." The 22-year-old has had a disappointing career in North America so far. He only managed to score 12 goals and 33 points in the AHL last season. Jul 5 - 11:01 AM

Buffalo Sabres’ head coach Ted Nolan said he’d like to see more determination from 2011 first round pick Joel Armia.

"He’s working at it, getting better. Adjusting from the European game over here sometimes takes a little while, but he definitely has some skill," said Nolan. "We’ve just got to (get) him to the point where he does it in hockey games." Armia’s first season in North America was somewhat disappointing, as the 21-year-old scored 7 goals and 27 points in 54 games with the Sabres’ farm team in Rochester last season. Armia will probably start the year in the AHL again this season.

Joel Armia has produced just seven goals and 25 points in 49 games with Rochester in the AHL this season.

"He shows signs," Americans coach Chadd Cassidy said of the talented Sabres prospect. "Still needs to build his consistency. He's just got to keep building it up. He's a confidence player. He's a guy that when things are going well and he gets rolling, he'll dominate. He's just got to make sure that he puts the work in to dominate like that every night. I think that's what a lot of young players struggle with." Armia was the 16th overall pick in the 2011 draft and he should get a long look with Buffalo next season at training camp.

"He's probably within a week I would imagine." He wasn't a cinch to make the team before he got hurt. Rolston said, "We'll probably send him down, he's got to play some games. It would be tough throwing him right into this league." Keep an eye on Armia as he has offensive talent.

The Buffalo Sabres may enter the 2013 NHL Entry Draft looking to add some more Finnish flavor to their organization to play alongside talented prospect Joel Armia.

"It's something we definitely think about," said Sabres' director of amateur scouting Kevin Devine. "You take a guy like Armia, he's got a couple real good friends in the draft. He's coming over this year. It'd be nice to have somebody in that group." Aleksander Barkov is ranked No. 1 among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting, while defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen is No. 4 and left winger Artturi Lehkonen sits ninth. Armia has played alongside all three of them at the World Junior Championship. Armia and Granlund lead the 2013 World Junior Championship in scoring now with 12 points each in six games, while Teravainen is tied for second with 11.

Joel Armia netted two goals for Finland in a 7-4 loss to Sweden in World Junior Championship action on Monday.

His two-goal effort helped the Finns rally from a 3-0 deficit to even the score, but they eventually fell to the Swedes and now they will have to play in the relegation round. "We tried to have a good start, but we had the opposite," said the Buffalo first-round pick. "It's so hard to win the game when the other team is three goals ahead." Highly-touted 2013 draft prospect Aleksander Barkov posted two assists in the defeat.
