Look for Matt Puempel to play against his former Ottawa Senator teammates Sunday.

Puempel played 13 games for Ottawa before the Rangers claimed him off waivers earlier this week. He scored his first of the season in his Rangers debut Friday and will look to show his former mates that the Senators made a big mistake in letting him go after drafting him in the first round in 2011.
Nov 27 - 8:42 AM

Matt Puempel scored in his Rangers debut on Friday in a 3-2 win over Philadelphia.

"They let you play here, they let you play to your strengths," Puempel said. "They know there are going to be mistakes. They're not barking at you every time you come off the ice. It's beneficial." It sounds like Puempel is a little bitter about how his time with the Senators went and he'll get a chance to play against his old teammates when Ottawa visits MSG on Sunday night.

Matt Puempel is thrilled to be a member of the New York Rangers.

The Senators first round pick and 24th overall in 2011 was placed on waivers by Ottawa Sunday and was claimed the next day by New York. "I've been here for probably 35 hours and it's been amazing," Puempel said before the Rangers faced the Penguins for the second time in three days. "Unbelievable the way everyone's treated me. I met all the guys today, too. Talked to them yesterday, but I'm so excited to be here. So grateful for the opportunity. Haven't stopped smiling since I heard the news." Puempel has yet to see action as a Ranger as he was a healthy scratch Wednesday but look for him in the lineup in the not too distant future. He had no points in 13 games with Ottawa before being claimed.
Nov 24 - 10:52 AM

Matt Puempel could see his first action in a Rangers uniform Wednesday.

Puempel was claimed off waivers Monday as the Rangers have been dealing with a couple of injuries in Pavel Buchnevich and Mika Zibanejad. "It's a guy we've scouted in the past and our scouts see some good things," GM Jeff Gorton said of Puempel. "(They) see some skill, see a guy that likes to shoot the puck and can score goals. When he was on waivers and things happened with Mika, obviously we've got a spot on our team right now and we want to take a look at him. It's just a timing thing where it's a guy we liked in the past and he's on waivers, so we put a claim in on him and we'll see what happens."
Nov 23 - 10:53 AM

Matt Puempel has been claimed by the New York Rangers.

He was put on waivers by Ottawa on Sunday. Puempel has four goals and two assists in 52 career NHL appearances. He was originally drafted with pick No. 24 in the 2011 class.
Nov 21 - 12:06 PM

The Ottawa Senators have waived winger Matt Puempel.

The 23-year-old has no points in 13 games with Ottawa this season. In all he has just six points in 52 games at the highest level. Though he posted 17 goals and 30 points with AHL Binghamton last season, it doesn't appear he's quite ready to make the jump.
Nov 20 - 12:35 PM

Matt Puempel will be a healthy scratch in Tuesday's game against Arizona.

Puempel was a healthy scratch in Ottawa's first two games, but played almost nine minutes in last night's game against the Red Wings. Phil Varone will also be scratched tonight, as the Senators dress a seventh defenseman (Thomas Chabot).
Oct 18 - 7:37 PM

Matt Puempel will be in the lineup for Monday's match against Detroit.

He was a healthy scratch for the first two games of the year. Puempel is projected to play on the fourth line with Chris Kelly and Chris Neil.
Oct 17 - 3:38 PM

Matt Puempel and Thomas Chabot will be scratched against Montreal on Saturday.

Despite all his scoring at the AHL level, the 23-year-old Puempel has yet to put it together in Ottawa with just six points in 39 games. Chabot meanwhile is still waiting to make his NHL debut, but then again we all are, the kid's got talent.
Oct 15 - 5:21 PM

Matt Puempel is getting a long look at training camp.

He has to go through waivers first to be demoted to the minors, so the Senators will take their time before a decision is made. "We've tried him everywhere," said coach Guy Boucher. "We tried him with our top line, second, third (and) fourth line now. We've looked at what he can do. He's played on the power play, we've had him on the penalty kill. We've had him everywhere." Puempel has played in an NHL-high six preseason matches and he has contributed three goals.
Oct 5 - 11:11 AM

Matt Puempel thinks he has a chance to be a full-time NHLer in 2016-17.

He feels more confident going into training camp and wants to play his style rather playing it safe like he did last campaign. "It's a huge fresh start," Puempel said. "It's a new GM, even though Pierre was there before (as assistant GM), new coaches — everything's new, so there's a new mentality. I had a good relationship with Dave but obviously with the new coaching staff, it's exciting. It's a positive energy feel in Ottawa. I was up there for a couple weeks in the summer and I think the whole city is excited, as are all the guys, too." Puempel had two goals and one assist in 26 games with Ottawa last season, while averaging 11:20 of ice time per match.
Aug 11 - 5:33 PM

The Ottawa Senators have signed Matt Puempel to a one-year, two-way contract.

Puempel's deal is worth $900,000 in the NHL or $75,000 in the minors. He had 17 goals and 30 points in 34 AHL contests last season. He also scored two goals and three points in 26 games with the Ottawa Senators.
Jul 16 - 9:07 PM

Matt Puempel picked up his fourth NHL goal during Saturday's 6-1 win over Boston.

Through 24 career NHL games, the 23-year-old Puempel has now posted just six points. So unless you're in a super duper deep pool, we'd leave him undrafted next season.
