One of his three power-play goals turned out to be the game-winner in a career best night for the 23-year-old. That's five points (4G,1A) in his last four games. J.T. Miller, Chris Kreider and Nick Holden scored the other goals for the Rangers who scored three unanswered in the third to blow it open.

Matt Puempel will make his return to the Rangers' lineup as he tags in for Brandon Pirri on Saturday in Nashville.

Well, that was fortunate. Puempel missed just five games over the last 12 days, which is far better than what most dealing with concussions get. In six games with the Rangers he's posted a goal with three hits and five shots. Pirri meanwhile has six goals and 12 points in 36 games with the Rangers thus far.

Look for Matt Puempel to play against his former Ottawa Senator teammates Sunday.

Puempel played 13 games for Ottawa before the Rangers claimed him off waivers earlier this week. He scored his first of the season in his Rangers debut Friday and will look to show his former mates that the Senators made a big mistake in letting him go after drafting him in the first round in 2011.

Matt Puempel scored in his Rangers debut on Friday in a 3-2 win over Philadelphia.

"They let you play here, they let you play to your strengths," Puempel said. "They know there are going to be mistakes. They're not barking at you every time you come off the ice. It's beneficial." It sounds like Puempel is a little bitter about how his time with the Senators went and he'll get a chance to play against his old teammates when Ottawa visits MSG on Sunday night.

Matt Puempel is thrilled to be a member of the New York Rangers.

The Senators first round pick and 24th overall in 2011 was placed on waivers by Ottawa Sunday and was claimed the next day by New York. "I've been here for probably 35 hours and it's been amazing," Puempel said before the Rangers faced the Penguins for the second time in three days. "Unbelievable the way everyone's treated me. I met all the guys today, too. Talked to them yesterday, but I'm so excited to be here. So grateful for the opportunity. Haven't stopped smiling since I heard the news." Puempel has yet to see action as a Ranger as he was a healthy scratch Wednesday but look for him in the lineup in the not too distant future. He had no points in 13 games with Ottawa before being claimed.

Matt Puempel could see his first action in a Rangers uniform Wednesday.

Puempel was claimed off waivers Monday as the Rangers have been dealing with a couple of injuries in Pavel Buchnevich and Mika Zibanejad. "It's a guy we've scouted in the past and our scouts see some good things," GM Jeff Gorton said of Puempel. "(They) see some skill, see a guy that likes to shoot the puck and can score goals. When he was on waivers and things happened with Mika, obviously we've got a spot on our team right now and we want to take a look at him. It's just a timing thing where it's a guy we liked in the past and he's on waivers, so we put a claim in on him and we'll see what happens."

The Ottawa Senators have waived winger Matt Puempel.

The 23-year-old has no points in 13 games with Ottawa this season. In all he has just six points in 52 games at the highest level. Though he posted 17 goals and 30 points with AHL Binghamton last season, it doesn't appear he's quite ready to make the jump.
