One young player to keep an eye on in Senators' camp in September will be Matt Puempel.
The 21-year-old winger really blossomed after Christmas playing for Binghamton of the AHL, scoring 30 goals on the season and registering 94 penalty minutes. The Sens believe he may be able to make the jump to the NHL next season and see him as the potential power forward they are missing. Apr 26 - 11:06 AM

Matt Puempel missed all three rookie tournament games for Ottawa because of a back issue.

He was nursing back spasms which could put him on the sidelines for the start of the Senators' big camp. Puempel had two goals for AHL Binghamton in three playoff games last year and he will probably end up starting the 2013-14 campaign in the minors once he's cleared to return.

Ottawa prospects Matt Puempel and Cody Ceci were two notable omissions from Canada's World Junior selection camp roster.

Due the lockout there is an abundance of talent for Hockey Canada, and other countries, to choose from to fill out their lineups, so some players who would've been there were likely to get squeezed out of the conversation. Puempel has registered 21 goals and six assists in 26 games with the OHL's Kitchener Rangers, while Ceci has seven goals and 30 points in 30 games with the Ottawa 67's to place him second in the OHL among blueliners in scoring.

Puempel has 21 goals in just 25 OHL games. He's recorded three points in back-to-back contests.

Matt Puempel scored the only two goals for Kitchener in its 3-2 setback versus Owen Sound on Friday night.

The 24th pick in the 2011 draft by the Senators, Puempel has good scoring ability and plays with a bit of an edge. Already, he has nine goals in 12 games.

Matt Puempel potted a goal, but Kitchener came up short in its 3-2 loss to Kingston on Friday.

Matt Puempel had a goal and an assist in Kitchener's 2-1 win over London on Friday night.

The Senators' 2011 24th-overall selection has four goals already this season. He had 33 points last year in a suspension/concussion-shortened season.

Don't expect Matt Puempel to break camp with the Senators next season.

Ottawa's first-round pick in 2011 missed a considerable portion of the 2011-12 campaign due to a suspension and a concussion that limited him to 30 games. Puempel scored 17 goals and registered 33 points for Peterborough in those 30 games. Although Puempel intends to come to the Senators' training camp ready to make an impression, he is realistic about his chances of making the roster. Puempel has tremendous offensive potential and is a junior player to keep an eye on this coming season.

The Ottawa Senators have selected Matt Puempel with the 24th overall pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft.

Ottawa sent the 35th and 48th overall picks in the 2011 draft to Detroit to get Puempel. He was considered a surefire top ten pick heading into the 2010-11 season coming off a 33 goal season as a 16-year-old in his first season with the Peterborough Petes. He was named the OHL and CHL’s rookie of the year and his future seemed bright. While he managed to score 34 goals and 69 points in 55 games this past season, the left winger slipped to 24th overall because he suffered a hip injury and required surgery. Puempel knows how to score, but his skating skills are average at best. Puempel is a high risk, high reward player.
