Mario Lucia has signed a two-year entry-level contract with Minnesota.

The 22-year-old just finished a brilliant four-year career with Notre Dame where he produced 61 goals and 110 points in 151 games. He'll head to AHL Iowa on an amateur tryout agreement for the rest of the season.

Mario Lucia plans to complete his degree with Notre Dame rather than turn pro in 2015-16.

The Minnesota Wild selected Lucia with the 60th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and would be happy to sign him now, but it looks like that won't happen. It's worth noting that this puts Lucia in a position where he can simply wait out Minnesota's claim on him and thus test the free agent market, but he insists that's not what this is about. "The Wild has a lot of interest in me," Lucia said. "It's my hometown team, and if I want to play in the NHL, I want to play with the Wild, for sure. I don't anticipate not signing with the Wild when I'm ready. I just feel I should return to school, graduate and keep developing as a player."

Mario Lucia has been selected for the United States' preliminary roster for the upcoming 2013 World Junior Championship.

Lucia has been limited to just six NCAA games this season due to a broken left fibula and ligament damage. Still, he's made the most of the limited time that he's had in 2012-13 by scoring four goals and five points with Notre Dame. Minnesota took him in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Although Mario Lucia suffered a broken left fibula and ligament damage on Wednesday, he's still hopes to return before the start of the World Junior Championships.

Lucia is expected to miss three months, but he's hoping to beat that estimate. If he's healthy in time, Lucia will be a candidate to make Team USA. He recently participated in the Evaluation Camp and scored a hat trick in a split-squad contest versus Finland. "Hopefully I can get a few games in before the world junior camp," Lucia said. "In the meantime, I'll just work to do well in school and have a good second half. But this is very disappointing."

Mario Lucia sustained a broken left fibula and ligament damage in his left ankle when a teammate fell on him during a battle drill at an off-season practice on Wednesday.

His injuries may keep him sidelined for the first three months of his freshman season at Notre Dame. "Hopefully I'll get back quicker than three months, but I'm in a cast for seven weeks, so there's not much I can do about that," Lucia said. He was chosen by the Minnesota Wild in the second round of the 2011 draft and he might miss his chance to represent Team USA at the World Junior Championships.

Mario Lucia, who was recently drafted by the Wild, will play in the NCAA next season.

The Wild selected Lucia with the 60th overall pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft. He considered a long-term project, so the fact that he's going to college makes sense. He grew up in Minnesota, so he could eventually become a fan favorite with the Wild.

Lucia is coming out of the USA Junior National program. He does not have much experience and is projected as a development project. He picked up three goals in six games for the USHL.
