The Detroit Red Wings are hoping to sign Tomas Jurco to an entry-level contract soon.

Detroit is waiting for the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation and International Ice Hockey Federation to come to a transfer agreement first. "I'm expecting myself to play in Grand Rapids this year," Jurco said. "I'll do my best, obviously. I'm going to try to get used to playing men hockey. I hope it won't be problem for me. Maybe I'll get a chance for a couple (NHL) games this year, maybe next year." The Slovakia-native had 30 goals and 68 points in 48 QMJHL games in 2011-12.

Red Wings prospect Tomas Jurco had 15 goals and 32 points in 20 playoff games in 2012.

Jurco led the QMJHL Saint John Sea Dogs all the way to the Memorial Cup semifinals before they were finally eliminated by the Shawinigan Cataractes. "They had a very good team and he was a big part of it," Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill said. "His point totals went up this year. He played good at both ends of the ice. He had a good world juniors for Slovakia. Overall he had a very good season." Jurco will probably sign an entry-level deal with Detroit soon and start the 2012-13 campaign in the AHL.

Detroit Red Wings’ prospect and puck handling specialist Tomas Jurco is determined to convince everyone he is more than an internet celebrity.

When someone in the Red Wings’ organization posted a video of the youngsters’ puck handling skills on YouTube it became an instant hit. Despite the fame that has come with the video, Tomas is not overly happy about it. Rather his focus is on making it to the NHL and becoming known as a respectable hockey player. Detroit’s general manager Ken Holland noted that his scouting team was thrilled to select Jurco in the second round of the 2011 entry draft.

Detroit Red Wings selected Tomas Jurco with the 35th overall pick.

There are many forwards in this year’s class who can fly, but it is difficult to find one who not only possesses the speed, but who also has the stickhandling and moves to accompany it. This combination of talent gives Jurco the ability to be a game-breaker on any given night. The only problem with the Saint-John Sea Dog is that he has a tendency to go through dry spells. If he can develop consistency to his game, he will be a game changer at the top level.
