Defenseman Joe Morrow could be the Stars future quarterback on the power play.

Morrow was acquired Sunday from the Penguins in exchange for Brenden Morrow with draft picks dealt from both sides. Morrow is a two-way blueliner who is tough and physical defensively but has improved the offensive side of his game and can now quarterback the power play and has a big shot from the point. "He was a person that we had our eye on in the draft," GM Joe Nieuwendyk said. "He has great skating ability, a really hard shot, and he's still very young. He just turned 20. He's a legitimate NHL prospect who fits a need in our group." Morrow was selected 23rd overall in the 2011 Draft and could be called up from the AHL before the end of the season.

Joe Morrow has impressed his coaches during AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's training camp.

"Joe has done a really good job so far," said Baby Penguins coach John Hynes. "He's so talented. You can see that in the way he skates, the way he shoots the puck. His offensive instincts are so good. For him, like most defensemen his age, he just needs to get better defensively. Playing without the puck, angles, stuff like that. He's on his way." Morrow was the 23rd overall choice in the 2011 draft and he will enter his first season of AHL play in 2012-13 after completing a successful junior career. He registered 17 goals, 64 points and 99 penalty minutes in 62 contests with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL last year.

2011 first round pick Joe Morrow has been impressive so far in scrimmages at the Penguins development camp.

Morrow was paired primarily with 2009 first-rounder Simon Despres and the duo had a lot of success against other Penguins youngsters. While the sample size is pretty small at this point, Morrow seems like a future NHLer.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have made Joe Morrow the 23rd overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Originally tabbed as a physical stay at home defenseman, scouts have been surprised by Morrow's improved skating game. The Portland Winterhawk has worked hard this past season on improving his footwork to cement himself as a capable two-way defenseman. Morrow registered a solid 49-point campaign while establishing himself as a tough fighter in the WHL. An injury-plagued junior career may cause warning signs to rise around Morrow, but he has promise as a mobile defender.
