The Tampa Bay Lightning have been impressed with forward Vladislav Namestnikov this preseason.

Namestnikov was the Lightning’s first round pick in 2011, and has spent most of the last two seasons with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. The 21-year-old did play four games with Tampa Bay last season but he didn’t register a point. "Guys develop at different rates, and I think he’s right on course," said Lightning head coach Jon Cooper. "We knew he was going to get (to the NHL), but he’s really opened some eyes in the first four preseason games. Namestnikov has registered seven assists in four games this preseason and definitely has a chance to stick with the Lightning this season.

Vladislav Namestnikov feels he improved as the 2013-14 season progressed.

"The biggest thing I improved is defense," he said. "It's a big part of the pro game. Other part is I got a little stronger and more confident. That was probably the biggest difference." Namestnikov registered 19 goals and 48 points in 56 games with Syracuse of the AHL last year. He didn't pick up a point in four appearances with the Lightning and he's eager to make a positive impression at training camp. He isn't likely to earn a roster spot, but could be one of the first call ups should injuries strike.

Vladislav Namestnikov is bigger and more confident at Tampa Bay's training camp this year.

"Vladdy went from potential healthy scratch (at the start of the season) to a guy that was hurt, to a top-six forward, and he did that all in one year," said Lightning coach Jon Cooper. "So that's a really, really good sign of a prospect to see somebody do that." Cooper coached Namestnikov in the AHL with Syracuse before he made the transition to the NHL and he feels that the 20-year-old Russian has a bright future even if he starts the 2013-14 campaign in the minors. Namestnikov has added muscle and confidence to his game, which are positive signs for his development.

Vladislav Namestnikov may be an intriguing player to watch at training camp.

Depending on when the season starts, the 2011 first-round draft pick of the Lightning could be in the NHL sooner rather than later following two impressive years in the OHL with London. "Vlady can play on any of the top four lines in your organization because he's dedicated and can kill penalties," said Tampa's director of amateur scouting Al Murray. "He can play with top offensive players, so he has a lot of versatility moving forward. He'll be in competition with others for our NHL team since we have a third-line center spot open, or he'll be on our AHL team."
