Mark Scheifele sustained "a slight concussion" in the OHL championship series against London, but Barrie coach Dale Hawerchuk expects him to be all right for the fall.
He missed Monday's Game 7 due to the injury after he was hit in Game 6. Barrie ended up losing to London when the Knights with less than one second remaining in regulation. Hawerchuk believes that Scheifele is ready to become a professional player next season. "But he's definitely ready, ready to go to the next level," he said. "I'll be surprised if he's not there ... I expect him to have a great camp and be ready." May 16 - 9:20 AM

Mark Scheifele had two goals and three assists in Barrie's 6-3 win over London in Game 3 of their OHL final.

Mark Scheifele's Barrie Colts will begin the OHL championship series on Friday against the London Knights.

The winner of the series will represent the league in the Memorial Cup. Scheifele leads all skaters in scoring with 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists) in 15 playoff games. Scheifele has skated in 11 games with Winnipeg over the past two seasons and he's accounted for one goal, but he still has plenty of promise as a prospect.

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff talked about the difficult decision to send Mark Scheifele back to the OHL on Wednesday.

"The easy thing would have been just to say, ‘Let’s just let him stay here and play, and see how it goes,’" said Cheveldayoff. "But the ‘see how it goes’ is kind of the unknown that you don’t want to have happen with a young player like this. The opportunity for him to go back, be a leader, continue to grow both on the game side and the strength side ... we feel strongly about." Most importantly, Cheveldayoff wants to be able to give the 19-year-old the proper ice time and opportunity. Scheifele was playing in a checking-line role on the wing, but the Jets GM wants him playing center in the NHL.
Feb 8 - 7:44 PM

Mark Scheifele has been returned to the Barrie Colts of the OHL.

He dressed in four games with the Winnipeg Jets and sat five as a healthy scratch this season before the team decided to return him to the junior ranks. Scheifele didn't have a point over that span, but he only got an average of 11:31 of ice time. He's still a very good prospect, who should be retained in keeper leagues, but he won't have any value until he gets top-six minutes.

Highly touted rookie Mark Scheifele was in the Jets' lineup for the fourth time this season.

The youngster, who has been a healthy scratch for a few games this campaign, has yet to register a point. That said, Scheifele was effective on faceoffs against the Lighting Friday winning 67% of them and had a season-high 16:47 of ice time. It will be interesting to see if he will stay with the Jets after he plays in his next (fifth of the season) game. In any event, watch him.
Feb 2 - 1:04 PM

It's unclear if Mark Scheifele will play on Thursday versus Florida.

He has been a healthy scratch for the past three games, but did accompany the team on their trip. "That decision will be an organizational decision," Noel said of when Scheifele may return to the lineup. "I have to look at Mark from a standpoint of... my concern is that Mark has been good. He's a question mark as far as what I do with the roster. It goes back to that question -- do I use him? We know where we stand with Mark. We have to sort some things out. That will sort itself out. There is no timeframe, not that I know of." Scheifele dressed in Winnipeg's opening three contests.
Jan 31 - 9:15 AM

Mark Scheifele was a healthy scratch for a third straight game on Tuesday night.

He went through extra drills and skating Tuesday morning in Montreal, which is expected of players who will be scratched. Scheifele has played three contests of his five-game tryout. It's still unclear what the Jets plan to do with him.
Jan 30 - 9:39 AM

According to coach Claude Noel, there has been no decision yet on Mark Scheifele's playing destination for the remainder of the season.

He has played three games so far and can play five before the Jets need to decide if he stays with the team or returns to Barrie in the OHL. Scheifele has been a healthy scratch for the past two games, which suggests he may be heading back to junior.
Jan 28 - 6:05 PM

It looks as if Mark Scheifele will start the season on the Jets' fourth line alongside Jim Slater and Chris Thorburn.

We're not sure this is the best use of a young and talented prospect. He might be better off playing in the AHL and getting top line minutes. Winnipeg's other line combinations for their opener against the Senators are as follows: Evander Kane-Olli Jokinen-Kyle Wellwood, Andrew Ladd-Bryan Little-Blake Wheeler, Alexei Ponikarovsky-Alexander Burmistrov-Nikolai Antropov.
Jan 19 - 1:53 PM

Mark Scheifele filled in for the injured Antti Miettinen and skated alongside Alex Burmistrov and Alexei Ponikarovsky in practice today.

With Miettinen out indefinitely with an undisclosed upper body injury, Scheifele may be in line for an expanded role with the Jets in the early parts of the season. He skated on Winnipeg's checking line the day before with Jim Slater and Chris Thorburn. Scheifele suited up in just seven games with the Jets last season, but he's a player with high offensive upside should he receive more ice time. Fantasy players should monitor his progress while Miettinen is on the shelf.
Jan 15 - 11:40 PM

Mark Scheifele might be better off returning to the OHL ranks if he doesn't secure a top-six spot with Winnipeg out of training camp.

As Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press points out, playing seven or eight minutes a night in a third- or fourth-line role, during a shortened season, won't be effective use of talents and potential. It's likely that Scheifele will get a least a five-game tryout look with the Jets to start the year. He skated with Jim Slater and Chris Thorburn during Monday's practice. If that's what the team has in store for him this campaign then he may be better off back in Barrie.
Jan 15 - 8:43 AM

Mark Scheifele is a very motivated man heading into Jets training camp.

The promising forward had a seven-game look in the NHL last year, but the Jets ultimately deemed that he wasn't ready, so they sent him back to the OHL. The 19-year-old has 49 points in 30 games with Barrie this season. "[Getting sent back is] not something you want to go through again, Schefiele said. "That's why I think I have even more motivation. You know what happens when you do get sent home."
Jan 12 - 7:56 PM

The Winnipeg Jets won't rush top prospect Mark Scheifele into their lineup.

"This year, it's not a race. Guys mature and get better at different times," said assistant GM Craig Heisinger. "He'll get to where he's going in due time, when he's ready, not when somebody else thinks he's ready. And he had a pretty good [world junior] tournament." He also expressed his happiness regarding Scheifele's maturity as a person because he said it "goes a long way to what kind of player you're going to be." Scheifele is expected to be invited to Winnipeg's camp to compete for a roster spot.
Jan 7 - 10:18 AM

Mark Scheifele is likely to be called up by the Winnipeg Jets if the lockout ends soon.

Scheifele has excelled in the OHL with 21 goals and 48 points in 29 OHL games. If the 2012-13 season is salvaged, Scheifele won't be the most fantasy appealing rookie from a short-term perspective, but he's worth holding onto in keeper leagues.
