Matt Nieto was scratched from Sunday's tilt with Columbus with an undisclosed injury.

The 23-year-old forward is having a difficult season with just six points in 20 games thus far, well off his career pace. Perhaps we're about to learn why he's been struggling, or perhaps a little time off can offer some clarity and help turn his fortunes around.

Matthew Nieto recorded an assist in a 2-1 loss to the Nashville Predators.

Nieto has a goal and four points in nine games this season. He's seen his ice time decline from an average of 15:15 minutes in 2014-15 to just 13:12 minutes per game so far in 2015-16.
Oct 29 - 11:26 AM

Matthew Nieto has been promoted to the top line alongside Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski.

Coach Pete DeBoer praised Nieto after Monday's loss to the Rangers, calling him the team's best forward in the defeat. Nieto has one goal and two assists in six games this year.
Oct 21 - 2:56 PM

Matt Nieto tied his personal career high in goals of 10 during Thursday's 3-1 over the Oilers.

It was an empty-netter, but they all count the same. Over Nieto's first two seasons, he has 20 goals and 51 points over 137 games.
Apr 10 - 1:46 AM

Matt Nieto scored the dagger in Friday's 3-1 win over the Coyotes, giving him his second two-game point streak in two weeks.

It was a nice goal as he cleaned up the rebound Chris Tierney was kind of enough to leave him. Nieto now has nine goals and 26 points this season, and is just one goal shy of matching his career high of 10 set last season as a rookie.
Apr 4 - 2:28 AM

Matt Nieto has four goals and seven points in his last 10 games.

Nieto had only four goals at the trade deadline and has doubled that in the last four weeks. Nieto had 10 goals and 24 points last year and has matched his point total thus far with two weeks to go in the season.
Mar 28 - 11:08 AM

Matt Nieto scored twice and added an assist in a 6-2 win over Vancouver on Tuesday.

The goals were Nieto's fifth and sixth of the season. The 22 year-old is going to be hard pressed to eclipse his 10 goals from his rookie season last year but could with a hot streak. Logan Couture, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Chris Tierney and Melker Karlsson all got in on the scoring fun in Vancouver. Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau each contributed two assists in a game that was actually closer than the final score indicated.

Matthew Nieto had an assist in San Jose's 5-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Nieto has four goals and 16 points in 48 games in 2014-15. We don't anticipate him having much fantasy value for the rest of the campaign, but he might be worth owning in standard leagues in a few years.
Feb 16 - 11:20 AM

Matthew Nieto needed six stitches close a couple of cuts suffered on Thursday.

Nieto was cut just below the eye when Ryan Getzlaf's shot hit him in the first period. While he was unable to return for the remainder of the period, he did return for the second and third stanzas. Nieto has four goals and 12 points in 39 games this season.
Jan 31 - 10:23 AM

Matthew Nieto recorded an assist in a 3-1 win against Toronto on Thursday.

Nieto has three goals and 10 points in 35 contests. Although he hasn't done much offensively this season, he's worth keeping an eye on as he played with Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton Thursday night.
Jan 16 - 9:38 AM

If Joe Thornton is unable to go on Saturday, then Matthew Nieto will fill in on the top line.

Thornton is probable so this could be a moot point. Nieto just returned to action on Tuesday after missing almost four weeks with an ankle injury. Nieto has only three goals and nine points this season in 28 games so his fantasy value to this point has been negigible.
Jan 3 - 10:24 AM

Matthew Nieto (ankle) is set to return on Tuesday.

It will be Nieto's first game since Dec. 4. It looks like he'll be eased back into the lineup as he's projected to start the contest on the fourth line. To make room for Nieto, who had to be activated off of the injured reserve list, the Sharks sent Chris Tierney to the minors.

Matthew Nieto (ankle) will probably return to the Sharks' lineup on Tuesday.

Nieto was upbeat after Sunday's practice. "I'm ready. That was the first practice I actually had with the whole team in awhile," Nieto said. "It was good to get out there with all the guys and compete and do some battles. It's ready. Good to go." Sharks coach Todd McLellan wasn't ready to say beyond all doubt that Nieto would be available on Tuesday, but he's certainly aware of Nieto's feelings on the subject. Nieto hasn't played since Dec. 4.
