Matt Nieto picked up his first point with Colorado during Saturday's 3-2 loss to Nashville.

Three games, one helper. Not quite the rate the Avalanche would like but it's a start. He now has 71 points in 224 career games.
Jan 14 - 6:09 PM

Matthew Nieto is projected to play with Matt Duchene and Rene Bourque on Thursday night.

"He's going on the second line, and I'm not sure that's the best spot for him, either," coach Jared Bednar said. "But we need someone to kind of help spark and find some chemistry with Duchene there." Nieto had four shots in his debut with the Avalanche last Friday after he was claimed off waivers from San Jose.

The Ottawa Senators also put in a wavier claim for the services of Matt Nieto, but lost him to the Colorado Avalanche.

That's because the Avs had a higher waiver priority due to their poorer record. As such a more struggling team won the claim. Nieto fired four shots and skated 17:29 during his debut with Colorado.
Jan 8 - 3:46 PM

Matt Nieto will make his Avalanche debut Friday night against the Islanders.

Sometimes all a player needs is a fresh start. "I'm very excited. It was a long 24 hours, you know, just waiting," Nieto said following Friday's morning skate. "But I'm really happy that Colorado picked me up. It's a good opportunity, and I couldn't be more excited." Nieto is slated to skate on the third line to the left of Carl Soderberg and Jarome Iginla.
Jan 6 - 7:01 PM

The Colorado Avalanche have taken Matthew Nieto off waivers from the San Jose Sharks.

It's not surprising that there was interest in Nieto on waivers. Though he fell out of favor with the Sharks and was scratched in eight straight contests leading up to him being put on waivers, the 24-year-old still has the potential to be a solid third line player in the NHL. He'll likely get that chance with Colorado and even if it doesn't work out, the Avalanche aren't risking much here.
Jan 5 - 12:12 PM

San Jose has placed Matthew Nieto on waivers.

Nieto spent the first three seasons of his career playing on a fairly regular basis for the Sharks, albeit with somewhat modest playing time. This season though, Nieto has seen his role shrink to the point where he's spent eight straight games in the press box. If he clears waivers he'll presumably be sent to the minors, but it wouldn't be surprising to see another team take a chance on the 24-year-old forward.
Jan 4 - 12:27 PM

Matt Nieto is expected to sit for his 8th straight game on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings.

With only two points in 16 games this season, Nieto is finding it hard to crack the lineup with the Sharks playing so well. Tommy Wingels is also expected to be scratched by the Sharks.

Jan 3 - 9:59 PM

Matthew Nieto has been scratched for five straight games.

The 24-year-old forward has earned just two assists in 13 games this campaign. He hasn't played since Nov. 26 against Anaheim.

Matt Nieto will sit out Friday's match against Montreal.

Unfortunate for the struggling young veteran as he picked up both of his season's points over the last five games, giving him two helpers in 13 games this season.

Matthew Nieto is projected to stay in the lineup Thursday.

He is poised to play on the fourth line with Chris Tierney and Tommy Wingels. Melker Karlsson (lower body) is out for a second straight game, so Nieto will remain in the fold.

Matt Nieto and Dylan DeMelo will be out against the Lightning on Saturday night.

DeMelo has yet to dress while Nieto is still without a point through six games. In fact, he's played just once since Oct. 22nd, indicating his role with the team at this time.
