Matthew Nieto has been dealt a setback in his recovery from an ankle injury.

Nieto had been practicing with the Sharks, but he wasn't able to do so on Monday. Sharks coach Todd McLellan has ruled him out for Thursday's contest, but Nieto might still return on Saturday. He has already missed five games due to the injury.
Dec 15 - 4:41 PM

Matthew Nieto (lower body) won't return on Saturday.

It will be Nieto's fifth straight contest on the sidelines. It's not clear what the lines will look like when Nieto returns, but Tommy Wingels might find himself sliding to the third line at that point.
Dec 12 - 6:13 PM

Matthew Nieto (lower body) has been moved to the injured reserve list.

As we previously reported, Nieto wasn't expected to play on Thursday anyways. In fact, given that this move is retroactive Dec. 4, it really doesn't change anything as far as Nieto's situation is concerned. He should still be regarded as day-to-day.
Dec 11 - 9:21 AM

Matthew Nieto (lower body) isn't expected to play Thursday.

However, he is considered to be close to being available to return. Nieto has missed San Jose's last three games.
Dec 10 - 5:07 PM

Matthew Nieto (lower body) might be back on Thursday.

Nieto is expected to participate in Wednesday's practice before a firmer determination regarding his availability is made. He has three goals and nine points in 26 contests this season.
Dec 9 - 2:50 PM

Matthew Nieto will miss Saturday's game with a lower body injury.

No word yet on the type or extent of his injury, but we'll keep you posted as the news breaks. Nieto has nine points in 26 games thus far this season.

Dec 6 - 7:58 PM

Matt Nieto scored the game winner with 11 seconds left in the third period to help the Sharks get past the Flyers 2-1 on Tuesday.

Nieto trailed the play on a Patrick Marleau break-away attempt and did well to snap home the rebound with a sprawling Steve Mason out of position in the Flyers net. The goal was his second goal in as many games after snapping a 21-game goalless drought on Saturday. He still has just three goals and six assists in 25 games this season. Marc Edouard-Vlasic provided the other goal for San Jose.
Dec 3 - 12:59 AM

Matthew Nieto hasn't scored a goal since opening night.

That adds up to a 21-game goalless drought. Nieto ended an eight-game pointless skid on Saturday with an assist against Arizona. "We'd like to see him score. For us to have success as a team, he's going to have to find the scoreboard, especially the minutes that he's played with the top lines and on the power play," said coach Todd McLellan. "He's created a number of chances, sometimes he's snake bitten, but it's gone on for a fairly long time." He may start Wednesday's game on the fourth line after he was dropped down there over the weekend.
Nov 26 - 4:09 PM

Matthew Nieto is expected to get a chance to play alongside Joe Thornton on Saturday.

Tomas Hertl will round out that line. This is a nice opportunity for Nieto, but to put it into context, he hasn't been wanting for skilled linemates so far this season. He has played with Thornton before and he's also spent a fair amount of time skating alongside Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture. Despite that, Nieto has just one goal and three points in eight games in 2014-15.
Oct 24 - 6:18 PM

Matthew Nieto is projected to play on a line with Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau.

Nieto had 10 goals and 24 points in 66 games in 2013-14. That's nothing to get excited about if you're a fantasy owner, but he does have some untapped offensive upside. We think he could take a decent step forward this season, although he's still not likely to be worth owning in standard leagues.
Oct 8 - 10:20 AM

Matt Nieto is out to prove he's the real deal, and it's hard to beat opening the game's scoring on your first shift just 68 seconds into the game.

Nieto was fed by Logan Couture and Patrik Marleau, which should give you an idea of what the coaching staff thinks of his talent. He skated 15:39 including 2:43 on the powerplay and 1:17 on the kill. The Sharks went on to beat Arizona on Friday night, 3-1.
Oct 4 - 1:20 AM

Matthew Nieto came into the Sharks' training camp stronger than he was in his rookie season.

Nieto, who now weighs in at 190 pounds, feels more comfortable with the team too. "I'm not as nervous this year," Nieto said. "But, nothing changes as far as working as hard as I can and trying to leave an impression. No spot is guaranteed, and I really want to earn it." After recording 10 goals and 24 points in 66 games in 2013-14, he has an opportunity to play a significantly bigger role this time around.
Sep 23 - 10:46 AM

Right winger Matt Nieto expects a bigger role with the San Jose Sharks next season.

In 66 games with San Jose last season, the right winger had 14 goals and 10 assists. He recognizes expectations have changed for him. "Yeah, I think next year I want to build off last season. I want to contribute more, I want to bring more to the table," Nieto said. "I'm sure all the rest of the guys in the locker room are saying that, too. What happened last year is unacceptable." The increased role for younger players likely would come at the expense of playing time for veterans such as Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau, but Nieto doesn't see that as making things awkward in the locker room. "We're a tight group. I think all of us will do whatever it takes to win," Nieto said. "Whatever their roles, whatever the coach wants from them or expects from them I think guys are going to do."
Jul 12 - 10:14 AM

Matthew Nieto scored a goal in San Jose's 6-3 loss to Los Angeles Thursday night at Staples Center.

Nieto now has two goals and five points in four career NHL playoff games. Joe Pavelski and James Sheppard also scored for the Sharks, while Patrick Marleau added two helpers in the loss.
