Josh Leivo made a big impression in his first game of the rookie tournament by scoring two goals for the Leafs on Saturday, but the coaching staff was not surprised with the 21 year old's impact.
"He proved that he’s a capable NHL player by playing up there last year," said the prospect team's head coach Gord Dineen. "The way we look at it is, it’s opportunity," said Dineen. "He gets a chance to play against younger guys and get a couple of games under his belt before the main camp." Leivo has been scratched from Sunday night's game against the Senators along with fellow standout WIlliam Nylander. It's clear Toronto thinks Leivo is ready to compete for a roster spot at the NHL training camp next week, with this week's rookie camp serving as a tune-up. Sep 14 - 5:22 PM

Josh Leivo scored his first NHL goal Thursday night.

Unfortunately, he also inadvertently injured teammate James Reimer when his leg struck the Toronto goaltender in the head. "I couldn't get out of the way. I tried jumping over him," said the Leafs rookie. "I guess my leg hit his head. It's just unfortunate for him. I couldn't feel (the contact with Reimer)." Leivo has appeared in four games with Toronto during his big-league call up.

Joshua Leivo sustained a chest contusion following a hard hit in Thursday's rookie tournament match.

He was taken out of the game, in the third period, as a precaution. Coach Steve Spott said, "Had it been a regular-season game, it would have been fine." Leivo and Brad Ross scored regulation markers for Toronto in the contest, while Tyler Biggs potted the deciding goal in the shootout of a 3-2 victory against prospects from the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are favorably comparing Joshua Leivo to Joffrey Lupul.

"He has a lot of qualities, kind of like Lupes, in terms that his mind works so quickly," Leafs director of player development Jim Hughes said. "He is wired to the point where what he is translating in his head, it goes right through his stick and his hands. He thinks quickly, he has an NHL stick, he has soft hands and he creates offence. His mind operates very fast." Leivo is expected to start the 2013-14 campaign in the AHL.

Josh Leivo is emerging as quite a prospect for the Maple Leafs.

He may not be on Team Canada's world junior team, but the 2011 third-round pick is still thriving in the OHL. Even after missing two weeks with post-concussion symptoms, Sudbury's assistant captain leads the team in scoring with 27 points in 26 games. "I think the Leafs have quite a prospect," Sudbury general manager Blaine Smith said. "Many nights he is carrying our offense. We’re having some trouble there [2.8 goals a game], but he and Chad Thibodeau are our only 19-year-old and Josh is playing with a 17-year-old in Dominik Kahun. ... He’s 6-foot-2, but he’s more a skill player than a power forward. His specialty is reacting on the ice. He can stickhandle in a phone booth, as they say."

Injury woes may have cost Joshua Leivo an invite to Team Canada's selection camp for the 2013 World Junior Championship.

He has been suffering from post-concussion symptoms since going heavily into the glass on Nov. 24 and was absent from some time early in the year with a hand injury. Leivo got off to hot start in the OHL and currently has 13 goals and 27 points in 26 games, but he didn't get an invite from Hockey Canada. The good news, as far as his injuries go, is that Sudbury Wolves GM Blaine Smith expects him to be fine after another precautionary week of rest.
