The New York Rangers have returned Magnus Hellberg to AHL Hartford.
Hellberg was summoned on Dec. 18 on an emergency basis. It's not clear if Antti Raanta will be ready to return from his head injury immediately following the Christmas break, so we might end up seeing the Rangers summon a goaltender again soon. Wed, Dec 23, 2015 03:28:00 PM

Magnus Hellberg made his NHL debut on Saturday.

Hellberg was put into a game that the Predators were losing 5-1 and went on to allow a goal on four shots. Magnus Hellberg spent the 2012-13 campaign getting use to the smaller ice surfaces in North America.

Hellberg went from playing in Sweden to the AHL. "It’s a different style of hockey over here," Hellberg said. "It’s a lot different than Sweden, so I had to make some adjustments to make my way of play work over here. Different angles, rebound control, stick handling. But I learn new stuff every day. As the season went on, my confidence grew and I felt more comfortable." There's an outside chance that Hellberg will serve as the team's backup goaltender next season, but he's more likely to start 2013-14 in the AHL.

Magnus Hellberg has inked an entry-level contract with the Nashville Predators.

The Nashville Predators traded backup goaltender Anders Lindback to the Tampa Bay Lightning, so there's a chance that Hellberg will be competing for a roster spot in training camp. He had a 2.60 GAA and .904 save percentage in 17 Swedish Elite League games in 2011-12.

The Nashville Predators took the first goalie in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft when they selected Magnus Hellberg.

That pick was a huge surprise as he was rated the seventh goalie in Europe and had not been selected in the previous two seasons, even though he was draft-eligible. But the Predators love his size and think he was the best goalie available. "When you talk to him, you'll think you're talking to a combination of Pekka Rinne and Anders Lindback," GM David Poile said. "If the similarities carry to the ice, we'll have made a terrific pick." Hellberg is still a few years away from possible NHL duty and the Predators will be patient with him.
