Max Reinhart is coming off a breakout season in the AHL last year, with 63 points in 66 games for Abbotsford, and could wage a serious challenge for a Flames' roster spot out of training camp.
The Flames have an abundant source of young offensive talent down the middle, highlighted by their first round draft choice Sam Bennett. At 22 years old and possessing a similar skill set to Bennett, Reinhart has acclimated his game to the pro ranks very well over the past two years. With the experience of playing with grown men and considering his entry level contract is already in its second year of effect, Reinhart might have the inside track to a roster spot. The Flames' prospects level of play will ultimately determine where they play this autumn, but don't be surprised if this intelligent, playmaking, two-way center hangs around come October. Max Reinhart has been sent down to the minors.

Max Reinhart will get a chance on Monday to show he deserves to belong on the Calgary Flames at the start of the season.

Reinhart played his first professional season in hockey last year and managed to play 11 games in the NHL where he had a goal and two assists. Reinhart will likely split the season between the NHL and AHL so look for him to play in 25-30 games with the Flames. He will not have fantasy value this season.

Max Reinhart is trying to take a bit of a leadership role during the Flames development camp.

With a full season of pro hockey under his belt, including 11 games in the NHL, he's gone a long way from where he was when he was drafted in 2010. "I got help from a lot of very good players coming through the system," Reinhart said. "Now I'm trying to do what they did for me." He's not a safe bet to make the Flames' opening game roster, but he certainly has a shot going into training camp.

Max Reinhart had a strong showing and scored a goal in a prospects game on Thursday.

"You know, I wasn't really sure what to expect," said Reinhart. "I put a lot of work in over the summer and I was kind of anxious to get out there and feel my way through it. I was pretty pleased with how I started." He's feeling more comfortable after playing in 11 games with the Calgary Flames last season. He'll be given a decent opportunity to make the Flames' opening game roster.

Max Reinhart, who scored his first NHL goal on Saturday was minus-26 in the AHL when he was recalled a week ago.

Reinhart was third worst in the AHL, a stat that caused Calgary coach Bob Hartley to chuckle when talking to his young center. "The first couple of games (in the NHL), he was feeling his way," Hartley said. "I brought him in and I said ‘Max, you have to jump. You have to take advantage of this.’ I said, ‘Let’s face it, there's not too many kids with a minus-26 rating being called up from the American League,’ and he started to laugh. I said, ‘Never mind this. You're in the NHL. We don't care. We're going to work with you. We're going to teach you, but show passion. Show that you like the game.’ So far, he's showing lots of great things to us." Reinhart has a minus-one rating in five NHL games so far.

Max Reinhart recorded his first NHL point on Wednesday.

It was an assist on Curtis Glencross' goal. Reinhart also recorded five shots on goal and logged 14:11 minutes. If he continues to get at least that much playing time, he might have some limited fantasy value in single-season leagues.

Max Reinhart is projected to center the first line on Wednesday.

The Calgary Flames don't have any hope of making the playoffs, so players like Reinhart should get plenty of opportunities. Despite that, we can't recommend picking up Reinhart at this time.

Calgary coach Bob Hartley was happy with the NHL debut of Max Reinhart Saturday.

Reinhart, the son of NHL veteran Paul who played 11 seasons in the league, was drafted in the third round of the 2009 Draft and played his first game in his hometown of Vancouver. "We want grit in this organization, and he went to the dirty areas," Hartley said. "He fought in the corners. He was great behind the net. For his first game, I was really happy." Reinhart had seven goals and 21 points in 67 AHL games this season, his first as a pro. While he scored in junior hockey, he could be a bottom six forward in the NHL, chipping in with the occasional point.
