Gregory Hofmann feels ready to make the jump to the NHL.

The 24-year-old was drafted 103rd overall in 2011, but he's been playing in Switzerland since then. "I want to show them I can play with this team and that I’m ready," Hofmann said. "I think I’m a totally different player than I was three or four years ago. I’m stronger. My shot is stronger. I think I’m ready to jump and take the next step." He had 12 goals and 28 points in 45 games with Lugano last season.

Gregory Hofmann will be eligible for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft after the Carolina Hurricanes failed to get him under contract.

"We wanted to sign Gregory to a contract, and felt that he could have a future with the Hurricanes on the NHL level," GM Jim Rutherford said in a statement. "It is disappointing that we were unable to reach an agreement with his agent to keep him in our organization." Hofmann, who the Canes took with the 103rd overall selection in the 2011 draft, recorded 16 goals and 27 points with Davos in Switzerland's top league this past season.

Gregory Hofmann is set to return to Switzerland for this coming season, but he enjoyed a strong showing at Carolina's Red-White scrimmage on Sunday.

He registered two assists and scored an empty net marker, while playing with Riley Nash and Chris Terry, to help give the White squad a 10-7 victory. The 18-year-old was chosen in the fourth round of the 2011 draft. "I know I am not ready to play now in the NHL," said a very modest Hofmann. "I will go back to my team in Switzerland for one year and after that will probably come back and try to play one year for the American League or in the NHL."
