It's definitely tough to have that situation," Trocheck said after Trafford was found dead from an apparent suicide. "Nobody would've expected it from him. He's always a real happy kid, a jokester, prankster, laughing, having fun out with the guys. When I heard he was missing it really weighed on me and after a week I started to have doubts."

It was an empty-net marker but was welcomed by the 20-year-old rookie who was playing his fifth NHL game. "It's definitely a weight off my shoulders. Five games felt like an eternity to get that first one," said Trocheck. "It feels good and hopefully, it'll keep coming up. Puck was rolling a little bit and I'm thinking if I miss this it's an absolute joke. … Actually, legitimately it felt like it took five minutes for me to skate down the ice." Trocheck has talent and a great deal of potential. Keep an eye on him with a view of drafting him next season.

The Florida Panthers are in no hurry to promote prospect Vincent Trocheck.

"That's not the way you develop players. You force kids into the wrong time wrong place," said interim coach Peter Horachek. "He'll get his opportunities and lots of opportunities if there's an injury to [centers Aleksander Barkov or Nick Bjugstad] then he'll get an opportunity. Otherwise it's best serving for him and the future for him to continue to be a top player there and play in all those situations." Trocheck leads the San Antonio Rampage in scoring with nine goals and 18 points in 20 games. Florida has struggled offensively this season, but they don't feel pressured to make changes so Trocheck will have to wait for another opportunity.

Vincent Trocheck will be aiming for a roster spot with the Florida Panthers at training camp.

"I'm definitely coming in here trying to make this team," he said. "It's going to be a battle. All they're telling us is to come here and expect to make the team. What else can a guy in our position do, you come here, work hard to try to make the team. If you do, great, if not, you keep working until you do." Quinton Howden, Nick Bjugstad and Drew Shore received NHL experience last season, but Trocheck has superb offensive potential working in his favor. He amassed 50 goals and 109 points in 63 games last year en route to the OHL's Most Outstanding Player of the Year. The Panthers will give roster spots to whoever shines at camp regardless of their age, so Trocheck could be an interesting player to watch.

Florida Panthers' prospects were instrumental in leading the Americans to their gold medal Saturday.

In fact, all three goals in the 3-1 gold-medal winning game were scored by Cats' prospects. Rocco Grimaldi scored twice, while Vincent Trocheck, the Panthers' third round pick in 2011, scored an empty net goal to seal the victory. One key to success in the NHL is finding top prospects after the first round of the entry draft. It looks as if the Panthers have done very well in that regard as both Grimaldi and Torcheck were drafted in the third round.

Team USA coach Phil Housley praised the work of Vincent Trocheck following Monday's important win over Slovakia in world junior play.

"I think [Trocheck]'s been an excellent penalty killer for us," Housley said on NHL Network. "You can see on the 5-on-3, how much of a great instinct he has, creating the play, blocking the shots. We threw him on the power play with [J.T.] Miller and Gaudreau and it seemed to click today." Trocheck scored shortly after killing Slovakia's two-man advantage to make it 8-2. He finished the contest with two goals and one assist for his first points of the tournament.
