Ondrej Palat's superb rookie season may be over, but he didn't go down quietly, scoring a shorthanded goal and adding an assist in Game 4's loss to the Habs on Tuesday.

Palat helped the Bolts back into the game, which they trailed 2-0 and then 3-1 in the third period. But a late penalty and the last-minute game-winning goal by Montreal finished the sweep and sent the Bolts packing. Palat is a solid candidate for the Calder Trophy after notching 59 points in the regular season, and then five more in the playoffs while maintaining a +35 rating during the season and playoffs combined.

Palat also won the award in January while the NHL didn't hand out the award in February due to the Olympics. He has 51 points in 75 games, putting him just five points behind Nathan MacKinnon in the rookie scoring race. While MacKinnon remains the favorite to win the Calder Trophy, Palat is certainly making things interesting.

Tampa's impressive rookies Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson have not slowed down over the course of the season.

There is often a concern that talented first-year players will hit the proverbial wall after about 60 games but neither Palat or Johnson seem to have had any issues in that regard. Of their chances to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie, Tampa coach Jon Cooper had the following to say: "I don't know if people are going to put those guys up in the conversation for the rookie of the year award, but I'll be really hard-pressed not to see those two names up there for what they've done for us in a situation where we were missing players and we needed guys to step up. Those guys stepped up." With 51 and 47 points respectively, indeed they have.
