Ondrej Palat was forced to leave Tampa Bay's playoff opener in the third period with an undisclosed injury.

He was seen walking around the locker room after the team's overtime loss and there wasn't an update on his status. Palat had an upper-body injury at the end of the regular season after a hard hit made contact with his head and there may have been a re-injury there. It was also speculated during the game telecast that he might have been hurt when he banged knees with Montreal's P.K. Subban. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Ondrej Palat left Friday's game against the Blue Jackets in the third period after being on the receiving end of a big hit administered by Columbus defenseman Jack Johnson.

It was a clean hit but did plenty of damage to Palat who was not able to return to the contest. Consider Palat day-to-day for now.

He has 51 points in 75 games, putting him just five points behind Nathan MacKinnon in the rookie scoring race. While MacKinnon remains the favorite to win the Calder Trophy, Palat is certainly making things interesting.

Tampa's impressive rookies Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson have not slowed down over the course of the season.

There is often a concern that talented first-year players will hit the proverbial wall after about 60 games but neither Palat or Johnson seem to have had any issues in that regard. Of their chances to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie, Tampa coach Jon Cooper had the following to say: "I don't know if people are going to put those guys up in the conversation for the rookie of the year award, but I'll be really hard-pressed not to see those two names up there for what they've done for us in a situation where we were missing players and we needed guys to step up. Those guys stepped up." With 51 and 47 points respectively, indeed they have.

Ondrej Palat earned the Lightning a point in the standings with a pretty rush goal against Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon.

He sent the game into overtime by scoring the tying goal at the 18:38 mark of the third period. "I saw their D was back and didn't have a lot of speed, so I just went around him," said Palat, who now has 19 goals and 49 points in 71 games. The talented rookie has picked up at least one point in seven of his past eight games.

With a big-time offensive weapon like Martin St. Louis gone, the Lightning will lean on some young players like Palat, who now has 15 goals and 39 points this season. Valtteri Filppula and Mark Barberio scored the other goals for Tampa Bay. Ryan Callahan also picked up his first point as a Lightning, a secondary assist on Barberio's goal.
