Ondrej Palat scored a power play goal in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Palat's goal at the 10:18 mark of the second period cut Vegas' lead to 2-1 at the time. Unfortunately for the Bolts, that's as close as they'd come to tying the game. Palat is now riding a four-game point streak (he has five points during that stretch). He has eight goals and 30 points in 45 games this season. Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov registered the assists on Tampa Bay's only goal.

Ondrej Palat scored a power play goal in Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Palat got Tampa Bay on the board with a power play goal at the 6:52 mark of the second period. The Lightning forward has now scored three times in his last four games. He’s up to seven goals and 14 points in 23 games this season. Even though he won’t get the same offensive opportunities as Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov, Palat is still on pace to score over 20 goals and close to 50 points in 2017-18.

Ondrej Palat has been paired with Tyler Johnson at training camp.

Coach Jon Cooper has also kept Steven Stamkos with Nikita Kucherov and Ryan Callahan with Chris Kunitz. Palat and Johnson have enjoyed success with Kucherov in the past, but they could still make for a solid second-line duo without him.

Ondrej Palat believes that Tampa Bay's rough 2016-17 campaign will serve as a lesson for the team.

Tampa Bay failed to make the playoffs after reaching the Eastern Conference Final in 2016 and Stanley Cup Final in 2015. "It was an experience for us last year because we came from two good (playoff) runs and we thought we were going to make the playoffs just like that, and it didn't happen," Palat said. "In the NHL we have to play good from the beginning of the season, and we have to be good all season long." Part of the Lightning's shortcomings last season can be pinned on the fact that Steven Stamkos was unavailable for the vast majority of the season, but certainly the Lightning would like to be a team that overcomes even high levels of adversity. Palat is armed with a five-year, $26.5 million contract that he signed this summer.

Ondrej Palat has signed a five-year, $26.5 million contract extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Palat scored 16 goals and 63 points in 75 games in 2014-15, but he hasn't done quite as well since. He was slowed somewhat by injury in 2015-16 and then last season he had 17 goals and 52 points in 75 contests. Still, those are pretty solid numbers and given his cap hit and history, this has the potential to be a really good contract for the Lightning. With this the Lightning have locked up all their major RFAs this summer as Tyler Johnson recently agreed to a seven-year, $35 million deal. The core of the Lightning is now locked up for a while and it will be interesting to see how they perform together over the next few years.

With Tyler Johnson signed to a seven-year, $35 million contract, Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is expected to focus on locking up Ondrej Palat too.

Palat is a restricted free agent with an arbitration hearing set for July 25. In other words, the two sides have two weeks to work out a deal or an arbitrator will decide on a short-term contract for them. "He's a very important player," Yzerman said of Palat. "I'm very hopefully we can reach an agreement before arbitration." It wouldn't be surprising to see Palat get a contract similar to Johnson's.
