Justin Schultz is getting as much power play time as Kris Letang of late.
Coach Mike Sullivan started using Schultz more when he returned from a concussion earlier this week. "Both of those guys are real good power-play guys," Sullivan said. "They both give our power play a chance to be successful. A lot of times, (assistant coach) Jacques (Martin) goes with the guy who happens to be fresh at the time, but really, it's more about just managing minutes so that the defense corps as a whole can be effective. Schultzy's a guy that excels there, and that's an area where we can help to get Kris' minutes down a little bit." Schultz had an assist Saturday and has two goals and five points in 13 games this season. He should be in someone's lineup at this time. Nov 12 - 8:18 AM

Nov 6 - 1:12 PM

Justin Schultz (concussion) could join the Penguins for their Western Canada swing next week.

That's according to coach Mike Sullivan who also said that Matt Hunwick could be with the team. Schultz was likely drafted quite high in most pools so his three assists in 10 games does not exactly bring joy to your heart. Stay tuned.
Oct 29 - 8:59 AM

Justin Schultz (concussion) has been placed on the injured reserve list.

The Penguins made the move so that they could summon Frank Corrado from the AHL. Schultz suffered the concussion on Tuesday and will miss at least three contests (Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday's games).
Oct 26 - 9:51 AM

Justin Schultz sustained a concussion during Tuesday's game.

Schultz left the contest in the first period as a result. It's never clear how long a player will be sidelined with a concussion so while he should be regarded as day-to-day, it could ultimately end up being a short-term or long-term injury. He has three assists in 10 games this season.

Oct 12 - 11:02 AM

Justin Schultz found the back of the net in the Penguins' season opener.

Schultz also had a plus-two rating and four shots on goal in Wednesday's 5-4 overtime loss to St. Louis. He's coming off a campaign where he set new career-highs with 12 goals and 51 points. He might not do quite that well again, but if he does suffer a dip in production, it should be just a small one.
Oct 5 - 10:58 AM

Justin Schultz and Kris Letang might alternate fluidly when it comes to which power-play unit each is on.

Letang is likely to see a higher percentage of the power-play minutes on the Penguins' top unit, but sometimes Schultz could take his place for certain shifts. "I think it’ll depend on how the game goes, who’s getting a certain workload, who’s fresh at a particular time," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. Sullivan sees them both as great options on the top unit so he has the luxury of being flexible there.
Sep 28 - 11:07 AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins has signed Justin Schultz to a three-year, $16.5 million contract extension.

Schultz is getting a huge boost from his one-year, $1.4 million deal for the 2016-17 campaign, but it's justifiable given the season he had. Schultz came up big for the Penguins with 12 goals, 51 points, and a plus-27 rating in 78 games. He added another four goals and 13 points in 21 playoff contests. This deal is very reasonable for the Penguins, especially given that Schultz didn't end up getting a long-term contract out of them.
Jul 1 - 5:38 PM

Pittsburgh is in the process of negotiating a long-term contract with defenseman Justin Schultz.

"It's early," said agent Wade Arnott. "But we've had some good, positive discussions." Schultz broke out in 2016-17 with 12 goals, 51 points and a plus-27 rating in 78 games. He is a restricted free agent with arbitration rights, but both sides hope to have a deal done before that happens.
Jun 27 - 12:51 PM

Justin Schultz scored his fourth goal of the postseason in Game 5 versus Nashville.

Schultz opened the scoring just 1:31 into the first period and it proved to be the game winner in a 6-0 victory for the Penguins. Pittsburgh's power play has struggled, but Schultz leads all defensemen with three goals on the man advantage in the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
