Justin Schultz scored his first goal of the season on Monday.
Schultz has two points and a minus-five rating in six games. He should get better as the season goes on, although we wouldn't expect too much more than 30 points from him. Oct 21 - 8:59 AM

Date:

Justin Schultz is a minus-five after five games this season.

The trend continues as Schultz had been a minus-39 in his previous 122 NHL games before the start of this season. He has only one assist this season and we cannot recommend him at this time.
Oct 18 - 10:10 AM

Justin Schultz was happy with how he did in his first preseason game of 2014.

"I felt really good (Sunday)," Schultz said. "I wanted to play my game, which is jumping up in the rush, which I thought I did quite well. The legs were there, which was good. It was a good win tonight." He stood out with a goal and an assist in Edmonton's 3-1 victory against Calgary. Schultz had 33 points in 74 games last season, but he's capable of doing more offensively.
Sep 22 - 7:19 AM

Justin Schultz scored the game-winner and added an assist in Edmonton’s 3-1 win over Calgary.

The Oilers and Flames played two split-squad games Sunday night, one in Edmonton and one in Calgary. This game was in Edmonton. Schultz scored on a wrist shot midway through the first period and added an assist on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ second period goal. The 24-year-old defenseman registered 11 goals and 33 points last season. Schultz has the offensive ability to improve on those numbers, but he’ll have to clean up his defensive game this season. Marco Roy scored the other goal for the Oilers.
Sep 21 - 10:39 PM

Justin Schultz acknowledged that he has plenty to prove after inking a one-year deal with Edmonton.

Schultz has a ton of offensive upside, but he also needs to work on the defensive side of the game. Oilers GM Craig MacTavish feels it would be wrong to say that he's currently weak defensively though. He argues that Schultz is doing a good job in one-on-one situations. "I thought I made better decisions last year in terms of jumping up and being better defensively," Schultz said. "I have to do it more consistently." He had 11 goals, 33 points, and a minus-22 rating in 74 games in 2013-14.
Sep 1 - 8:23 AM

Justin Schultz received high praise from his General Manager Craig MacTavish after signing his one year contract extension with the Oilers on Friday.

"I think that Justin has Norris Trophy potential, and I don't think there are too many people that would disagree with me in that regard," MacTavish said. With 60 points in 122 NHL games, Schultz has definitely showed flashes of the dominance that he displayed in the NCAA and AHL before coming into the NHL. If MacTavish is right and Schultz puts up a Norris-caliber season, he'll be doing it at $5.325 million less per year than 2012 winner P.K. Subban. Nonetheless, the 24 year-old has a high-ceiling and will be a much sought-after fantasy defenseman.
Aug 30 - 11:22 AM

Justin Schultz has signed a one-year, $3.675 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers.

He recorded 11 goals and 33 points in 74 games last season, but he also had a minus-22 rating. Schultz quarterbacks the Oilers' power play, where he contributed 12 points a year ago. Edmonton wants more consistency from him at both ends of the ice and if he can show progress in either discipline then it will help his case of earning a longer term deal.
Aug 29 - 12:14 PM

Justin Schultz remains an unsigned restricted free agent with training camp a little less than a month away.

"Stalemate is too strong a word ... both parties are listening. We're very optimistic something will get done (before camp starts Sept. 18)," said Oilers senior vice-president of hockey operations Scott Howson. The two sides may agree to a one-year deal if the numbers don't add up on a two-year bridge contract. Edmonton views him as a 40-point defenseman and he recorded a total of 33 a year ago.
Aug 26 - 5:39 PM

Justin Schultz has great offensive potential, but he may have to settle for a supporting role if his defensive play doesn't improve.

He didn't have the benefit of many offensive zone starts at five-on-five situations, but a minus-22 rating is a sign for concern after he had a minus-17 rating during the lockout-shortened season. Schultz registered 11 goals and 33 points in 74 games this past year. He recorded 12 points with the man advantage and will be looking to improve his overall game in 2014-15.
May 20 - 10:17 AM

Justin Schultz was on the ice for all three of the Los Angeles Kings' goals on Thursday.

Schultz's plus/minus rating has fallen to minus-21. That negates some of his offensive value, but it's something that should improve in the years to come, in part because the Oilers are likely to eventually start getting moving further away from the NHL's basement.
Apr 11 - 6:52 AM

Justin Schultz has a goal and an assist in the Oilers' 4-2 win on Sunday.

Schultz has 11 goals and 32 points in 71 games this season. He should build on those numbers in 2014-15.
Apr 7 - 10:02 AM

Justin Schultz had an assist in Edmonton's 3-1 loss to Buffalo on Thursday.

Schultz has been a bit of a disappointment from an offensive perspective this season, but his 28 points in 63 games certainly isn't bad for a sophomore defenseman. Look for him to build on his 2013-14 campaign and flirt with the 40-point mark in 2014-15.
Mar 21 - 9:39 AM

Justin Schultz's ninth goal of the 2013-14 also happened to be a power-play game-winner on Sunday.

That helped the Edmonton Oilers beat the desperate Carolina Hurricanes 2-1. Schultz now has 27 points on the season, which might be a disappointment for some since he has such impressive offensive potential.
Mar 16 - 8:37 PM

Justin Schultz found the back of the net in Edmonton's 3-2 win over Buffalo.

Schultz has recorded four points in his last five contests. That gives the sophomore blueliner eight goals and 24 points in 50 contests in 2013-14.
Feb 4 - 7:31 AM

Defenseman Justin Schultz scored a goal and had an assist during a big Sunday night for the Oilers, who clobbered the visiting Nashville Predators 5-1.

Schultz opened the scoring with his sixth goal of the season. He picked up his 16th assist of the season in the third period. Four other Oilers had two-point nights. Ryan Smith had his seventh goal and 11th assist. Jordan Eberle produced his 18th goal and 25th assist. And Ryan Nugent-Hopkins contributed his 15th goal and 25th assist. Schultz was a plus-2, while the other three two-point scorers were plus-1. Nail Yakupov also scored a goal for the victors, his 10th of the season.
