Justin Schultz has signed a one-year, $1.4 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Schultz was an unrestricted free agent after the Penguins declined to present him with a qualifying offer. That allowed Pittsburgh to present him with a significantly cheaper contract than the $3.9 million deal he had for 2015-16. He had four goals and 18 points in 63 games with Edmonton and Pittsburgh last season. Jul 13 - 12:46 PM

Justin Schultz did not get a qualifying offer from Pittsburgh.

He can test unrestricted free agency now, but still could sign with the Penguins for less than the $3.9 million he earned last year. Schultz skated in 18 regular-season games and 15 playoff matches with Pittsburgh in 2015-16 after he was acquired from Edmonton.

Justin Schultz will probably end up testing the unrestricted free agent market.

Schultz is technically in line to become a restricted free agent, but only if Pittsburgh presents him with a qualifying offer. It appears that offer is too rich for the Penguins taste though because he made $3.9 million in 2015-16. The Penguins would still like to re-sign Schultz at something less than what it would cost to qualify him, but that might not be doable.
Jun 16 - 12:43 PM

Justin Schultz logged 18:53 of ice time in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against San Jose.

That's the most ice time he has seen in one game over his 10 playoff appearances. Schultz had an assist in Pittsburgh's 3-2 victory to give him three helpers in the postseason.
May 31 - 9:36 AM

Justin Schultz is expected to stay in the lineup for Game 3 against Tampa Bay.

He left the ice at the morning skate before Olli Maatta, who was a healthy scratch in Game 2 on Monday night. Schultz has appeared in just four playoff games this year and he hasn't registered a point yet.
May 18 - 12:10 PM

Justin Schultz appears to be in the lineup for Game 2 on Monday night.

Coach Mike Sullivan said the lineup will be a "game time decision," but based on the morning skate Schultz looks like he is in and Olli Maatta is out. Schultz left the ice at the morning skate well before Maatta did.
May 16 - 12:00 PM

It looks like Justin Schultz could play in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final against Tampa Bay.

Schultz has served as a healthy scratch in all but three of Pittsburgh's postseason games, but it looks like coach Mike Sullivan is thinking of playing him in Game 2. Schultz skated on a pairing with Ian Cole and was used on the second unit of the power play during Sunday's practice. Olli Maatta appeared to be the odd man out.
May 15 - 12:54 PM

Justin Schultz could draw into the Pittsburgh lineup for Game 2.

He has been a healthy scratch in nine of the Penguins 12 playoff games but with Brian Dumoulin questionable for Game 2 because of an injury suffered in Game 1, Schultz could get back on the ice. The former Oiler was dealt at the trade deadline and has seen limited action for Pittsburgh but the Penguins like his offensive potential and he should quarterback the second power play if he draws into the lineup.
May 15 - 8:41 AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that Justin Schultz will be scratched for game 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday.

Schultz has zero points in three games during the post-season. Beau Bennett, Oskar Sundqvist, Derrick Pouliot, and Jeff Zatkoff will also be scratched for the contest. The Pens are rolling with the same team that beat the Capitals in game 7.
May 13 - 8:13 PM

Justin Schultz will dress in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Final against the Washington Capitals.

Schultz played a shade over five minutes in the Penguins first postseason game, but has sat ever since. With the suspension to Letang, he slides back into the lineup. Oskar Sundqvist will also dress in place of Eric Fehr. Steven Oleksy and Tom Sestito, recently recalled from the AHL will not dress.

Justin Schultz was paired with Ian Cole during the morning skate and appears to be in the lineup for Game 4 versus Washington.

He said he was "pretty sure" that he's playing. Schultz has appeared in just one playoff contest with Pittsburgh and that came back in Game 1 versus the Rangers when he logged just 5:52 of ice time. The Penguins will give him another chance after losing Olli Maatta to injury and Kris Letang to a suspension.
May 4 - 1:44 PM

Justin Schultz will probably get out of the press box for Game 4 on Wednesday.

Schultz didn't draw into the lineup after Olli Maatta (upper body) was deemed as unavailable for Game 3, but now the Penguins are also missing Kris Letang (suspension). Schultz last played on April 13.
May 4 - 9:48 AM

Justin Schultz will be a healthy scratch in Game 3 against Washington.

There was an opening on the Pens blueline after Olli Maatta suffered an upper-body injury in Game 2, but Pittsburgh decided to go with Derrick Pouliot over Schultz. The Penguins defense pairings shape up as follows: Kris Letang-Brian Dumoulin, Trevor Daley-Derrick Pouliot, Ian Cole-Ben Lovejoy. With Marc-Andre Fleury returning from a concussion (he'll be the backup), goalie Jeff Zatkoff will also serve as a healthy scratch.
May 2 - 8:04 PM

Justin Schultz looks like a healthy scratch for Game 3 on Monday night.

He was the last defenseman off the ice at the end of morning skate, so it appears as though Derrick Pouliot will fill in for Brooks Orpik versus Pittsburgh.
May 2 - 4:20 PM

Justin Schultz might draw into the lineup if Olli Maatta (upper body) isn't available for Game 3 on Monday.

It sounds like there's a better than even chance that Maatta won't play. Schultz hasn't been used by the Penguins since April 13, but he says he's ready to jump in if needed. "We've been working hard, the guys that haven't been playing," Schultz said. "Obviously, it's different being in a game situation, but you have to get ready. It's playoff time. If I have to go, I'll be ready."
