The Pittsburgh Penguins has signed Justin Schultz to a three-year, $16.5 million contract extension.
Schultz is getting a huge boost from his one-year, $1.4 million deal for the 2016-17 campaign, but it's justifiable given the season he had. Schultz came up big for the Penguins with 12 goals, 51 points, and a plus-27 rating in 78 games. He added another four goals and 13 points in 21 playoff contests. This deal is very reasonable for the Penguins, especially given that Schultz didn't end up getting a long-term contract out of them. Jul 1 - 5:38 PM

Pittsburgh is in the process of negotiating a long-term contract with defenseman Justin Schultz.

"It's early," said agent Wade Arnott. "But we've had some good, positive discussions." Schultz broke out in 2016-17 with 12 goals, 51 points and a plus-27 rating in 78 games. He is a restricted free agent with arbitration rights, but both sides hope to have a deal done before that happens.

Justin Schultz scored his fourth goal of the postseason in Game 5 versus Nashville.

Schultz opened the scoring just 1:31 into the first period and it proved to be the game winner in a 6-0 victory for the Penguins. Pittsburgh's power play has struggled, but Schultz leads all defensemen with three goals on the man advantage in the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Jun 10 - 9:51 AM

Coach Mike Sullivan was happy to get Justin Schultz back from an upper-body injury in Game 7 versus Ottawa.

Schultz made his presence felt on the scoresheet with a goal and an assist in the contest even though it looked like he wasn't quite playing at 100 percent. "I think [the goal], in and of itself, is an indication of the impact he has on our team and our ability to win games. But it doesn't just stop there on the power play," Sullivan said. "He's a good puck mover. He's a mobile guy. He gets back to pucks. He sees the ice well. He can go tape-to-tape when the opportunities are there. So he helps our transition game." Schultz has done a great job pushing the Penguins forward even though the defense corps is missing Kris Letang.

Justin Schultz will play in Game 7 against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.

May 25 - 7:50 PM

Justin Schultz is on the ice for the pre-game warmup on Thursday.

It's a good sign for his availability that he's on the ice right now. It's a do-or-die game for the Penguins and Senators, as the winner of tonight's game will take on the Predators in the Stanley Cup Final.
May 25 - 7:41 PM

Justin Schultz (upper body) is being listed as a game-time decision for Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final.

Schultz didn't skate with the Penguins Thursday morning though, so it would be a bit surprising if he still ended up playing. He has two goals and eight points in 14 playoff games in 2017.

Justin Schultz (upper body) might be able to play in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final on Sunday afternoon.

The injury has kept Schultz out of the lineup for the last two games. With Kris Letang and Chad Ruhwedel injured, the Pens could definitely use Schultz in tomorrow's game. We'll likely find out about his availability for Game 5 right sometime on Sunday.
May 20 - 11:43 AM

That's not too surprising given that Schultz wasn't among the participants in the Penguins' informal skate Friday morning. He has two goals and eight points in 14 playoff contests this year.
May 19 - 1:11 PM

Justin Schultz (upper body) wasn't one of the players that participated in the Penguins' informal skate on Friday.

We can't read too much into Schultz's absence given that it wasn't even a proper practice, but Schultz didn't skate on Thursday either. It would be surprising to see him play in Game 4 Friday night.
