Justin Schultz contributed two assists in Friday's 7-1 victory against Carolina.
He has produced 32 points in just 45 games this season. Schultz had a personal best 33 points in 2013-14 with Edmonton and he should surpass that mark easily this year. Jan 21 - 9:37 AM

Justin Schultz had four assists in Monday's 8-7 victory over Washington.

That's a new career-high for assists in a single game for Schultz. It's the latest in what's been a strong campaign for him though as he has seven goals and 30 points in 43 contests. To put that in context, Schultz has never registered more than 33 points in a single season.

Don't be surprised to see Justin Schultz and Kris Letang together on the first power play.

The Penguins have gone with four forwards and Letang for a long time but the emergence of Schultz in the last five weeks has changed some plans, especially when he played so well with Letang out of the lineup. "I think these guys are both very capable guys," coach Mike Sullivan said. "We might use both of them on the unit. ‘Tanger’ is obviously an elite defenseman and has been such a big part of this team in every aspect, the power play being one of them. Justin, in ‘Tanger’s’ absence, has done a really good job and helped the power play continue to grow and get better. We feel as though we can keep both of those guys in the mix. It might give us an opportunity to manage minutes better and to make sure that we allow the recovery time for those guys so that they can be at their best. I think it gives us more versatility and more options, depending on the struggles or challenges that we face." Schultz has seven goals and 25 points in 39 games with a plus-24 rating.

Justin Schultz is wrapping up a month where he had a superb showing.

Schultz has six goals and 17 points in 14 December games. That's the most points any Penguins defenseman has had in a month since Sergei Zubov got 17 points in March 1996. It's also not just Schultz's offensive play that's been strong either. "His play away from the puck, his positioning, the use of his stick to defend, his willingness to go back for pucks to take hits to make plays to help us get out of our end zone – these are all, in my mind, the thankless jobs that defensemen do for our team that help us win, and I think he's improved drastically in those areas of the game," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan.

Justin Schultz has been on fire over the month of December.

Including the goal and assist Schultz recorded on Tuesday, he has 14 points in 10 December games. That's the most points of any defenseman this month. He wasn't that prolific prior to that though, so he's at 20 points in 33 contests overall. Still, it's great for the Penguins, especially right now as defensemen Kris Letang and Trevor Daley are sidelined.

Justin Schultz scored his first two-point game of the season during Thursday's 6-2 win over the Stars.

Schultz picked up a pair of helpers to bring his total up to seven for the season, and eight points. He now has 16 points in 42 games with the Penguins.

Justin Schultz is quarterbacking the Penguins power play in the absence of Kris Letang.

The Penguins were 4-18 in Letang's first four games and are 4-19 without him in five contests. While Schultz has only one assist in the five games and two in nine games this season, the promotion has to do wonders for his confidence. Letang is expected back this week but look for Schultz to qb the second unit.

Justin Schultz has signed a one-year, $1.4 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Schultz was an unrestricted free agent after the Penguins declined to present him with a qualifying offer. That allowed Pittsburgh to present him with a significantly cheaper contract than the $3.9 million deal he had for 2015-16. He had four goals and 18 points in 63 games with Edmonton and Pittsburgh last season.

Justin Schultz did not get a qualifying offer from Pittsburgh.

He can test unrestricted free agency now, but still could sign with the Penguins for less than the $3.9 million he earned last year. Schultz skated in 18 regular-season games and 15 playoff matches with Pittsburgh in 2015-16 after he was acquired from Edmonton.

Justin Schultz will probably end up testing the unrestricted free agent market.

Schultz is technically in line to become a restricted free agent, but only if Pittsburgh presents him with a qualifying offer. It appears that offer is too rich for the Penguins taste though because he made $3.9 million in 2015-16. The Penguins would still like to re-sign Schultz at something less than what it would cost to qualify him, but that might not be doable.

Justin Schultz logged 18:53 of ice time in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against San Jose.

That's the most ice time he has seen in one game over his 10 playoff appearances. Schultz had an assist in Pittsburgh's 3-2 victory to give him three helpers in the postseason.

Justin Schultz is expected to stay in the lineup for Game 3 against Tampa Bay.

He left the ice at the morning skate before Olli Maatta, who was a healthy scratch in Game 2 on Monday night. Schultz has appeared in just four playoff games this year and he hasn't registered a point yet.

Justin Schultz appears to be in the lineup for Game 2 on Monday night.

Coach Mike Sullivan said the lineup will be a "game time decision," but based on the morning skate Schultz looks like he is in and Olli Maatta is out. Schultz left the ice at the morning skate well before Maatta did.

It looks like Justin Schultz could play in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final against Tampa Bay.

Schultz has served as a healthy scratch in all but three of Pittsburgh's postseason games, but it looks like coach Mike Sullivan is thinking of playing him in Game 2. Schultz skated on a pairing with Ian Cole and was used on the second unit of the power play during Sunday's practice. Olli Maatta appeared to be the odd man out.

Justin Schultz could draw into the Pittsburgh lineup for Game 2.

He has been a healthy scratch in nine of the Penguins 12 playoff games but with Brian Dumoulin questionable for Game 2 because of an injury suffered in Game 1, Schultz could get back on the ice. The former Oiler was dealt at the trade deadline and has seen limited action for Pittsburgh but the Penguins like his offensive potential and he should quarterback the second power play if he draws into the lineup.
