Justin Schultz tied for 828th in the NHL with a minus-19 rating.
That's only plus-three higher than the NHL's worst rating. "It’s been a tough season for a lot of us," said Schultz. "It’s not like the AHL or college, where you can afford to make a mistake and guys won’t capitalize. Here, you make a mistake and they’re going to put it in the back of your net." Schultz has still performed well offensively with seven goals and 23 points in 46 games. Schultz still has a lot of upside and we wouldn't read too much into his plus/minus rating, especially given that he's a rookie on a bad team. Depending on the changes the Oilers make over the summer, Schultz could do much better in 2013-14. Apr 26 - 10:16 AM

Justin Schultz has been named the recipient of the Eddie Shore Award for the 2012-13 season, which goes to the AHL's outstanding defenseman.

He is the first rookie to win the award during its 55-year history. Schultz played in just 34 games for the Oklahoma City Barons, while the NHL lockout was happening. During that time, he generated 18 goals and 30 assists for 48 points. In the NHL, he has accounted for 21 points in 42 contests.

New GM Craig MacTavish played a vital role in Justin Schultz signing with the Oilers.

"He was very good at telling me what was going on here and telling me what was going on with the organization," Schultz said. "He was a huge part of persuading me to come here and I'm excited that he's going the GM of this team.He was the one who talked to my agents and told them they were interested. When we decided to meet with them, he came, Kevin Lowe came, (head coach) Ralph Krueger and Hallsy (Taylor Hall), they all came to meet me. He told me about the young core and the direction they were heading was a positive one. He felt that I would be a good addition with this young team, and it was really good." Looks like MacTavish has a big fan in Schultz.

Expect to see Justin Schultz have a tough time in Anaheim on Monday.

It will be the first time that the defenseman will have played in Anaheim after refusing to sign with the team that drafted him and becoming an unrestricted free agent. Schultz signed with the Oilers in June and while he is a sensation offensively, he leaves a lot to be desired in the defensive zone. Duck fans will let him know how they feel on Monday as this will be the first time that they will actually see him play live.
Apr 8 - 8:10 AM

Defenseman Justin Schultz scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-1 triumph Monday night of the cross-province Flames, who were visiting from Calgary.

Schultz was supposed to add a great deal of offense to the Oilers' attack this season but his goal Monday was only his sixth of 2013. His assists were his 12th and 13th. Also scoring goals for Edmonton were Taylor Hall, his 12th, Ryan Jones, his second, and rookie Nail Yakupov, his seventh. Hall, Jones and Yakupov also had assists.
Apr 2 - 12:04 AM

Justin Shultz, as with the rest of the Edmonton Oilers, couldn’t find their scoring touch in a 3-0 loss to St. Louis Saturday night.

Shultz is pointless in his past five contests and has recorded points in just one game out of his past 10.
Mar 24 - 7:26 AM

Justin Schultz is concerned about 'hitting the wall' this season.

Schultz has already played 25 games this season more than he did last season and the Oilers still have 20 regular season games to go. His play of late has been off as Schultz has only three assists in his last nine games. He has been a power play specialist this season with 15 of his 18 points coming with the man-advantage but that should be no surprise as his play five-on-five has been less than stellar. He is a good fantasy player notwithstanding his poor plus/minus but he should improve on all his skills in the next couple of years.
Mar 19 - 9:48 AM

Justin Schultz had a goal and an assist in Edmonton's 5-1 win on Thursday.

Schultz also had a plus-two rating after going minus-seven in his previous seven games. He's now in a three-way tie for third place in the NHL rookie scoring race with 12 points in 19 games. As far as rookie defensemen go, he has a comfortable lead over Dougie Hamilton (nine points in 17 contests).
Mar 1 - 10:34 AM

Justin Schultz has a minus-seven rating in his last seven games.

Schultz also has three points in his last four games, but the question of if he's been struggling lately has still come up. "I think it’s more a rookie in the NHL who’s realizing, and we've seen this with all the rookies we've had the last few years, that there are just certain times where dealing with the pace and dealing with the pressure and the responsibility, it wears on you," Oilers coach Ralph Krueger suggested. "He’s still doing OK. He probably hit some sort of mental fatigue more than physical." It's worth noting that he's played in 52 games between the AHL and NHL this season. He never played in more than 43 games in an NCAA campaign.
Feb 27 - 10:47 AM

Justin Schultz is fine to play Saturday after missing Friday's practice.

Schultz apparently skipped the skate due to back stiffness. He has four goals and seven points in 13 games this season.
Feb 16 - 3:08 PM

Justin Schultz (undisclosed) didn't participate in Friday's practice.

Schultz was originally supposed to practice Friday after leaving Thursday's skate due to "tightness." Oilers coach Ralph Krueger still regards Schultz as very probable for Saturday's game, but we'd forgive you if you had your doubts at this point.
Feb 15 - 2:45 PM

Justin Schultz didn't complete Thursday's practice for precautionary reasons.

"He was feeling a little bit of tightness and we just didn't want to risk anything. We sent him off the ice. It looked manageable, like a spasm," Oilers coach Ralph Krueger said. He's still expected to practice on Friday, but we'll err on the side of caution and list him as day-to-day for now.
Feb 15 - 10:19 AM

Justin Schultz scored Edmonton's only goal in a 2-1 loss to Detroit on Saturday.

The rookie defenseman's fourth goal of the 2013 campaign was set up by Jordan Eberle and Teemu Hartikainen on a second-period power play. Schultz entered the season with a great deal of hype and he's been good so far with seven points in 11 contests.
Feb 9 - 5:04 PM

Justin Schultz is eligible to win the AHL rookie of the year award.

Don't be surprised if Schultz wins it after scoring 18 goals and 48 points in 34 AHL contests during the lockout. What makes this situation even more interesting is that he might end up with the Calder Trophy too. If that happens, he'll be the first player to ever win both awards in the same season. Schultz has two goals and five points in five NHL games this season.
Jan 30 - 10:27 AM

Justin Schultz notched a goal and two assists in the Oilers' 4-3 loss to the Flames on Saturday night.

Schultz is no ordinary rookie defenceman. Through 4 games he has 2 goals, 4 assists, he's a +1 with 2 power play points and on Saturday night, led the Oilers in ice time with nearly 25 minutes.
