Ryan Sproul (knee) has received the green light and he will play in Monday's preseason match versus Pittsburgh.

Sproul underwent left knee surgery in April. Coach Jeff Blashill wants him to "make sure he is fast back to the puck. He's got to make sure he spends as little time in the d-zone as possible so he can use his best asset, and that is his feet and his shot." Right now, Sproul is the odd man out as the eighth defender on the depth chart because Detroit only wants to carry seven blueliners going into the year.

Detroit GM Ken Holland isn't sure if Ryan Sproul (knee) will be ready for the start of the season.

Holland expects Jonathan Ericsson (wrist), Tomas Tatar (shoulder) and Luke Glendening (ankle) to be available for the season opener on Oct. 5, but he wasn't certain about Sproul's status. He missed the last 19 games of the 2016-17 campaign due to an ACL injury. Detroit will need a replacement for the seventh defense spot if Sproul isn't ready to play.

It still hasn't been determined if Ryan Sproul will need surgery on his injured knee.

If he doesn't need the procedure to repair a partial tear in his left ACL then he should be ready for start of next season. Sproul skated in 27 games with the Red Wings in 2016-17.

Ryan Sproul left Saturday night's game in the second period with an apparent left knee injury.

He was blasted by the Oilers' Matt Hendricks and went flying into the Red Wings' bench and then a few minutes later got tangled up around the Detroit net. Sproul will be re-evaluated Sunday, but for now consider him day-to-day.

Ryan Sproul is a good bet to return to the lineup Thursday night.
