Dec 11 - 6:00 PM

The Detroit Red Wings have assigned Xavier Ouellet to Grand Rapids in the AHL.

With Brendan Smith coming off the injured reserve list, the Wings had to send someone down. Ouellet played well since his call-up and he should be back in Detroit fairly soon.
Nov 30 - 12:53 PM

Red Wing defenseman Xavier Ouellet continues to impress Detroit head coach Mike Babcock.

He scored his first NHL goal in Detroit's 5-4 overtime win over New Jersey Friday night and has been sound in all five games he has played to date. Ouellet was called up from Grand Rapids of the AHL on November 19th when Brendan Smith sustained a hand injury and he is making a strong case to remain in Detroit even after Smith returns to action. "He's a good player," Babcock said. "He's smart, he's competitive, he makes plays and he plays like a veteran player." High praise indeed. That said, Ouellet has limited offensive skills which depresses his fantasy value.
Nov 29 - 9:48 AM

Detroit coach Mike Babcock has been impressed with the play of Xavier Ouellet.

"He's a good hockey player," Babcock said. "He plays like a veteran." Ouellet has skated in just two games with the Red Wings this season after appearing in four NHL contests last year. He also dressed in one match during the playoffs last spring. Ouellet is positionally sound and the 21-year-old defender plays with a lot of poise.
Nov 24 - 10:31 AM

Xavier Ouellet registered his first NHL point in Detroit's 4-1 loss to Toronto.

The 21-year-old was the Red Wings' second round pick in 2011. Ouellet had a strong training camp but Detroit still sent him to the AHL. He was called up earlier this week and collected an assist in only his second game.

Nov 19 - 5:49 PM

Xavier Ouellet has been sent to the minors.

Ouellet was one of the last two cuts the Red Wings made to their training camp roster. He had four goals and 17 points in 70 AHL games in 2013-14.
Oct 7 - 2:15 PM

Xavier Ouellet is performing well in training camp and is pushing for a spot on Detroit’s back line.

Ouellet scored the only goal in Detroit’s 5-1 loss to Toronto on Friday night. The 21-year-old has been praised throughout camp for being smart and having good hockey instincts. Ouellet played five games for the Red Wings last year, including one in the playoffs. Ouellet was known to be an offensive defenseman in junior, and he’s received some time on the power play throughout camp.
Oct 4 - 9:29 AM

Xavier Ouellet has impressed coach Mike Babcock at training camp.

He likes the consistency that the 21-year-old defender displays, which is probably why Babcock had no issue playing him over Jakub Kindl in the playoffs. Ouellet suited up in four games with the Red Wings last season. Alexey Marchenko, Matthias Backman, Nick Jensen and Ryan Sproul are expected to get good looks at camp as well.
Sep 26 - 7:40 AM

Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock is hoping some of his young defensemen push for jobs during training camp.

"I’m hoping (Xavier) Ouellet, (Alexey) Marchenko, (Matthias) Backman and (Ryan) Sproul all have a chance to push for jobs," said Babcock. "We added depth up front last year. We’d like to do the same on the back, but they have to be ready." All four prospects could potentially return to the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids this year, but it looks like Detroit will give each player a serious chance to earn a roster spot with the big club.
Sep 21 - 9:00 AM

Xavier Ouellet might be a candidate to make Detroit's roster out of training camp next season.

He posted four goals and 17 points in 70 games with AHL Grand Rapids this past season and he skated in four matches with Detroit. Ouellet also dressed in one playoff contest for the Red Wings over Jakub Kindl, so the club clearly has faith in his abilities. He showcased offensive talent in two years of QMJHL play, but it didn't come through in his first professional campaign. It wouldn't be a shock if Ouellet started the year in the minors to better develop his overall game.
May 29 - 1:14 PM

He made his NHL playoff debut in Game 5 versus Boston. Ouellet had one shot and a minus-1 rating in 9:20 of ice time in that match. The Red Wings also returned goaltender Jake Paterson to help bolster Grand Rapids' chances in the AHL playoffs.
