Xavier Ouellet might have the inside track in the battle to earn one of Detroit's last defensive roster spots.
"When Ouellet is playing his best hockey he’s very good defensively and manages his game real well," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "He makes good outlet passes without trying to do too much. He doesn’t turn the puck over." Ouellet can't be sent back to the AHL before first being exposed to waivers, which he might not clear. The 23-year-old had 29 points and 66 penalty minutes in 61 AHL contests in 2015-16. Sep 26 - 10:43 AM

Xavier Ouellet has worked hard over the summer to ensure that he sticks with the Red Wings going into the season.

Ryan Sproul and Nick Jensen are out of waiver exemptions as well, but Ouellet is the only one of the three who has NHL experience. "I am really excited to have an opportunity where I'm going to have to perform and find a way to get a spot in the lineup," Ouellet said. With Kyle Quincey gone and Niklas Kronwall banged up, the 23-year-old defender could start the year as a top-six option. If Kronwall is good to go then Ouellet will have to get ahead of Alexey Marchenko on the depth chart to see playing time.

Xavier Ouellet is slated to be a third-pairing defender in 2016-17 with Detroit.

Kyle Quincey was permitted to leave as a free agent and Ouellet can't be sent down without clearing waivers. Still, he will have to compete with Alexey Marchenko for playing time. The 23-year-old blueliner has appeared in 30 games for the Red Wings over the last three seasons.

Xavier Ouellet is expected to finally graduate to the Detroit Red Wings next season.

He would have to clear waivers to be sent down to the minors and the Red Wings believe he is ready for full-time NHL action. Ouellet has skated in just 30 games with Detroit over the past three seasons and he has contributed four points.

Apr 20 - 11:25 AM

Xavier Ouellet has been assigned to the minors.

The Red Wings will likely get Jonathan Ericsson back from injury on Saturday, so Ouellet has been returned to the AHL. Ouellet has one assist in five games with Detroit this year and he has 17 points in 38 contests with Grand Rapids.
Feb 24 - 5:41 PM

Xavier Ouellet will pair with Alex Marchenko in Sunday's match with Boston.

Ouellet tags in for Jonathan Ericsson who is sidelined with an injury. The 22-year-old Ouellet has just three points in 22 career NHL games, but has already matched his career high of 17 points set in 70 games two seasons ago in 38 games this campaign.

The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Xavier Ouellet from the AHL.

The call up was necessary because Jonathan Ericsson is questionable for tomorrow's game against the Boston Bruins. The 22-year-old has yet to play in an NHL game this season, but he does have two goals and three points in 25 games over the last two seasons.
Feb 13 - 5:58 PM

Xavier Ouellet has been sent to the minors.

Coach Jeff Blashill is confident that Xavier Ouellet has a future with the Red Wings.

"I have lots of belief in X," Blashill said. "I think I know X as a player and what X can do. I think X is right there with a lot of D in this room. He is a very good player. When he will get his opportunity, time will tell that. But he'll get an opportunity at some point, whether it's this year or in the future, and he'll be a real good NHL player." Ouellet hasn't dressed for Detroit in 2015-16, but he signed a one-year deal with the team on Nov. 16 and has to clear waivers to be sent down next season. That probably means that he'll be in the NHL.

Xavier Ouellet and Tomas Nosek will be scratched from Tuesday's match with New Jersey.

The pair of youngsters are as full of potential as they are familiar with now-Detroit bench boss Jeff Blashill. However it's tough to accumulate value from the stands.
