Coach Jeff Blashill is confident that Xavier Ouellet has a future with the Red Wings.

"I have lots of belief in X," Blashill said. "I think I know X as a player and what X can do. I think X is right there with a lot of D in this room. He is a very good player. When he will get his opportunity, time will tell that. But he'll get an opportunity at some point, whether it's this year or in the future, and he'll be a real good NHL player." Ouellet hasn't dressed for Detroit in 2015-16, but he signed a one-year deal with the team on Nov. 16 and has to clear waivers to be sent down next season. That probably means that he'll be in the NHL.

Xavier Ouellet and Tomas Nosek will be scratched from Tuesday's match with New Jersey.

The pair of youngsters are as full of potential as they are familiar with now-Detroit bench boss Jeff Blashill. However it's tough to accumulate value from the stands.

The 25-year-old defender has posted just three points in 25 career NHL games, which is about a 75% drop off from his rates in the AHL. Suggesting he's probably not much of a fantasy asset for you.

Ouellet is still waiting for his chance to crack Detroit's roster. He has skated in 25 regular season games in his NHL career and he has one playoff appearance as well.

Ouellet is regarded as being day-to-day. He's not a great bet to make the Red Wings out of training camp, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him with Detroit at some point this season.

He wasn't sent to the minors by Detroit during the break and use the time off during the All-Star break to recover. I've played already 50 games. You got to take care of your body. I'm going to take (the break) and rest and make sure I'm ready to compete." Xavier Ouellet will skate on Detroit's third defensive pairing with Brendan Smith on Wednesday night in Calgary.

Ouellet's offensive prowess hasn't quite translated to the AHL (25 points in 91 games), let alone the NHL (two points in 16 games), but seeing as he's still just 21 years old, there's no good reason to write him off just yet. Keep an eye on him in deeper pools.
