Xavier Ouellet has played in the last two games for the Red Wings.
He is getting a chance to play again due to injuries to Brendan Smith and Alexey Marchenko. Ouellet has been limited to just eight appearances this season, as he has spent more time in the press box than on the ice. The 23-year-old defender wants to do everything he can to remain in the lineup. He dropped the gloves with Antoine Roussel on Tuesday versus Dallas and he logged 17:31 of ice time. Nov 30 - 10:16 AM

Through six games Ouellet has a point and not much else to his credit. To wit, he's averaging just 14:44 of ice time per game. Which suggests that he isn't trusted yet.

Xavier Ouellet and Ryan Sproul will be scratched from Sunday's match with Edmonton.

Through 11 combined games this season the pair of young defenders have just three points between them and not much else. Until that changes, we'd leave them on the wire.

Xavier Ouellet and Ryan Sproul will be scratched from Friday's match with Winnipeg.

Unfortunate neither youngster have made much of an impact on the stat sheet. Ouellet has a point in six games, whereas Sproul has two points in five games. We'd leave them on the wire, for now anyway.

Oct 25 - 7:24 PM

Xavier Ouellet has been playing well even though some of his fellow Detroit defenders have been struggling early into the year.

"I think I am playing well," said Ouellet. "I think I'm doing what I've got to do. I want to make sure that I gain the coach's confidence. I want to play smart. I want to play hard. I want to be good defensively and go from there." He wants to secure a spot on the roster before Niklas Kronwall is ready to return from a knee injury or else he could be exposed to waivers. Ouellet picked up his first point of the year with an assist on Monday versus Ottawa.
Oct 18 - 10:14 AM

Xavier Ouellet, who is playing very well in pre-season so far, is one of three Detroit Red Wing defensemen who are not waiver exempt.

Ouellet along with Ryan Sproul and Nick Jensen can't be sent to the AHL without being exposed to waivers. Although NHL coaches will tell you roster spots are determined on merit only, teams don't like to expose young talent to waivers when there is a possibility another team will make a claim. This bodes well for at leat two of Ouellet, Sproul and Jensen in their battle for a roster spot with Robbie Russo.
Oct 2 - 10:07 AM

Xavier Ouellet might have the inside track in the battle to earn one of Detroit's last defensive roster spots.

"When Ouellet is playing his best hockey he’s very good defensively and manages his game real well," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "He makes good outlet passes without trying to do too much. He doesn’t turn the puck over." Ouellet can't be sent back to the AHL before first being exposed to waivers, which he might not clear. The 23-year-old had 29 points and 66 penalty minutes in 61 AHL contests in 2015-16.
Sep 26 - 10:43 AM

Xavier Ouellet has worked hard over the summer to ensure that he sticks with the Red Wings going into the season.

Ryan Sproul and Nick Jensen are out of waiver exemptions as well, but Ouellet is the only one of the three who has NHL experience. "I am really excited to have an opportunity where I'm going to have to perform and find a way to get a spot in the lineup," Ouellet said. With Kyle Quincey gone and Niklas Kronwall banged up, the 23-year-old defender could start the year as a top-six option. If Kronwall is good to go then Ouellet will have to get ahead of Alexey Marchenko on the depth chart to see playing time.
