Phoenix Coyotes assign Chris Brown to AHL Portland.

Radim Vrbata is expected to be activated off injured reserve Wednesday and the Coyotes needed to clear a roster spot. Brown dressed in one game after being recalled March 1.

Chris Brown played 6:52 minutes in his NHL debut Monday.

Brown played alongside Raffi Torres and Boyd Gordon on the fourth line and took a two minute minor for holding in the third period. "Nervous, excited, all the above," Brown said about how he felt to play in his first game. "But thrilled that I get the chance to play in the National Hockey League and wear a Coyotes jersey and play with some of the best players in the world." He had 18 goals and 29 points in the minors this season so he knows how to score. He could see power play time in front of the net but will not be a top-six forward at this stage of his career.

Chris Brown is expected to make his NHL debut for the Coyotes tonight against the Ducks.

Brown was the team's second round pick in 2009 and helped Team USA win the bronze medal at the 2011 World Junior Championships. He will be the fifth player from Texas to suit up in an NHL contest. The others are HOF'er Brian Leetch, Mike Christie, Tyler Myers and Zach Redmond.

With Martin Hanzal and Radim Vrbata hurt, the Coyotes need some able bodies. Brown has 18 goals and 29 points on the year. He was the team's second-round pick in 2009 and will likely make his NHL debut on Saturday.

Phoenix has inked University of Michigan center Chris Brown to a three-year, entry-level deal.

He generated 12 goals and 17 assists in 38 games with the Wolverines this past season and will not be back for his senior year. Brown helped Team USA win the bronze medal at the 2011 World Junior Championships and he was chosen in the second round of the 2009 draft by the Coyotes.
