Zigmund Palffy has decided to retire from professional hockey at the age of 41.
Palffy hasn't played in the NHL since the 2005-06 campaign, but he's been dominant in the Slovak Extraliga for years. He had 26 goals, 73 points, and 103 penalty minutes in 39 games with Skalica in 2012-13. "One morning is more beautiful than the previous one, and you have other opinions. At this point, I believe that I quit. Definitive. Already I do not want to travel anywhere. Did it enough," said Palffy. He had some tremendous seasons in the NHL and is retiring with 329 goals and 713 points in 684 career contests with the New York Islanders, Los Angeles Kings, and Pittsburgh Penguins. It's hard not to at least picture what Zigmund Palffy might do in the NHL after games like Sunday; he scored three points in Skalica's 7-1 thrashing of Martin on Sunday.

Obviously, it's unlikely that he'd come back to North America being that he hasn't played an NHL game since 2005-06. Even so, his 37 points in 19 games this season (and 83 in 48 contests in 2011-12) represent impressive marks - inferior competition or not.

Zigmund Palffy had a goal and four assists in Skalica's 6-5 victory against Nitra.

That gives Palffy 22 points in just 13 Slovakian games. Palffy hasn't played in the NHL since 2005-06 and at the age of 40 a comeback seems unlikely. Still, he's dominating in the Slovak League.

Former NHL star Zigmund Palffy is playing for HC 36 Skalica in the Slovak League.

The 40 year old retired after the 2009-10 season but returned last season and managed 26 goals and 83 points in 48 games. He is off to a good start again this season with a couple of goals and an assist in two games. He had five seasons of 85 or more points in the NHL during his career.

Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Ziggy Palffy has retired.

On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins winger announced his retirement, effective immediately, due to personal reasons. "I have agreed on all matters related to my retirement with the Pittsburgh management," Palffy told a newspaper in his native Slovakia. "There is no point in suffering any longer." Palffy, 33, first injured his right shoulder in January 2004 when he was a member of the Los Angeles Kings. He twice had reconstructive surgery, but problems persisted. "I have talked to my doctor and he did not recommend a third operation," Palffy told the newspaper. Palffy had previously retired from the Slovak national team ahead of next month's Turin Olympics. Palffy owners will not be pleased with this decision as he still had 42 points in 42 games this season.

A Slovakian news agency is reporting that Ziggy Palffy will not play for his native country in the Turin Olympics, and may in fact retire.

The Fan 590 in Toronto aired this report this morning. Palffy is said to be tired of playing with a nagging shoulder injury. There is no word if Palffy's alleged retirement would take place immediately or at the end of the season. Stay tuned.

Ziggy Palffy will not play tonight against the Red Wings and will likely miss tomorrow's game against the Blues as well.

His groin muscle is still bothering him and he did not make the trip to Detroit. The Penguins are hoping Plaffy will be available for the home and home series against Buffalo on the weekend, but nothing is etched in stone.

Ziggy Palffy did not practice yesterday as he re-aggravated a groin injury Thursday night.

He will not play this evening against Colorado. Consider Palffy day-to-day.

Winger Ziggy Palffy is now listed as doubtful for tomorrow night's game against the Wild.

Palffy, who's been suffering from a groin injury, skated for the first 10 minutes of yesterday's practice but left the ice in some discomfort. "He didn't feel all that great," said coach Ed Olczyk. Keep Palffy on reserve until further notice.

Zigmund Palffy skated on his own yesterday, and he feels ready to play tonight against the Flames.

It was initally thought that Palffy would miss tonight's game, but he has pronounced himself healthy. This is good news for the Penguins as they desperately require scoring, and the winger is tied with Sidney Crosby for the team lead in points. Keep him activated.

Zigmund Palffy left last night's game in the second period with a groin muscle strain and did not return.

Palffy will be re-evaluated today to detemine the severity of the injury. It is a safe bet that Palffy will not play tomorrow against the Flames.

Zigmund Palffy notched the game winner in the Penguins win versus the New York Rangers.

Palffy continues to play well on a team that stresses offense over defense. Look for Palffy to be a steady contributor on offense for the rest of the season. Playing on the power play with Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby doesn't hurt his stock either.
