Damien Brunner is excelling on the third line with fellow rookies Joakim Andersson and Gustav Nyquist.
Brunner has four goals and seven points in nine playoff games to lead all first year players. Brunner is not actually considered a rookie because of his age but it is his first season in the NHL after a very good career in Europe. He played a lot of the regular season with Henrik Zetterberg but his play in the playoffs has been excellent as a third line player. "I really don't think (Brunner) has a clue what's going on," Jimmy Howard said with a chuckle. "I don't think he understands the realm of things and what can possibly happen as the playoffs unfold. He's in a good mood every single game. We got a lot of guys with a lot of energy, and you can just see the excitement on their faces." May 20 - 7:36 AM

Damien Brunner scored his fourth goal of the playoffs in Detroit's 4-1 win Saturday.

Brunner slowed down as the 2013 season went on, but he's been a pleasant surprise for the Red Wings in the playoffs. Brendan Smith, Johan Franzen, and Valtteri Filppula netted the Red Wings' other three goals. Henrik Zetterberg recorded his sixth and seventh assists of the postseason. Jakub Kindl, Daniel Cleary, Joakim Andersson, Jonathan Ericsson, and Niklas Kronwall each registered an assist in Game 2.

Damien Brunner notched the only goal for the Red Wings in their 4-1 loss in Game 1 of their semifinal series with the Blackhawks on Wednesday night.

It was pretty much the lone bright spot offensively for the Red Wings, who couldn't sustain enough of a forecheck and offensive pressure to really put the Blackhawks on their heels, even when the game was tied 1-1 leading up to the third period. Brunner now has three goals and three assists in the postseason. Gustav Nyquist and Jonathan Ericsson picked up the helpers on the goal. Justin Abdelkader had four penalty minutes and had a game-high eight hits. Niklas Kronwall and Johan Franzen finished with a team-low minus-two rating.
May 15 - 10:58 PM

Damien Brunner scored the game-winning goal 15:10 into the overtime period Monday night as the Red Wings evened the series at 2.

Brunner's goal came after Jonas Hiller stopped Gustav Nyquist on a breakaway. Hiller was unable to corral the puck after Nyquist's shot and Brunner raced in from the wing to chip it over his pads, sending Joe Louis Arena into an absolute frenzy. The goal capped off an incredibly intense overtime session between the Red Wings and Ducks, who will host Game 5 on Wednesday night.
May 6 - 11:42 PM

Damien Brunner is looking forward to his first playoff game in Detroit.

"I’ve been waiting for this for quite a while now," Brunner said. "I’m really excited to come in and have a great atmosphere. I don’t know what they’re going to do before the game, but it’s going to be an awesome atmosphere walking into the Joe tonight." Brunner had a goal and two assists in Detroit's 5-4 overtime win on Thursday. The Red Wings' series against the Anaheim Ducks is even going into Game 3 Saturday night.
May 4 - 1:56 PM

Damien Brunner had a goal and two assists in Detroit's 5-4 overtime win Thursday.

Brunner, like most of the Red Wings' squad, was largely ineffective in Game 1. He's not expected to routinely put up big offensive numbers like he did in Game 2, but he's a valuable secondary scorer.
May 3 - 9:40 AM

Damien Brunner was limited to one shot on goal in Game 1 of Detroit's first-round series.

Brunner had 12 goals and 26 points in 44 games in his rookie season. "The one thing I've heard all year is Bruns can't do that or doesn't do that," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "I look at the score sheet, and he's on it. There's a whole bunch that are never on the score sheet. What I've learned over time is you can be big and strong and check like crazy and have no points game after game, or you can be small and not that great defensively and you might even turn the puck over and you can get stats all the time. You have to decide. I like guys who can score."
May 2 - 9:26 AM

Damien Brunner recorded his 23rd point of the season Saturday night, an assist on the opening goal, to help the Red Wings earn a point but couldn’t score in the shootout as the Canucks won 2-1.

Brunner’s transition to the NHL hasn’t been silky smooth but it’s considering he’s an undrafted Swiss 27 year-old in his rookie year, there’s a good possibility he’ll improve next year.
Apr 21 - 6:28 AM

Forward Damien Brunner has registered just one goal in his past 20 games.

The former Swiss League standout started off his NHL career in impressive fashion by scoring 10 goals in his first 19 games, but he has hit quite the rough patch of late. The coaching staff in Detroit have shown enough faith in him to make us believe he can turn things around, but we're would be looking for other options in the short term.

Damien Brunner returned to action on Thursday April 11.

Apr 12 - 3:53 AM

Damien Brunner (hip flexor) is expected to return to the lineup Thursday night against the San Jose Sharks.

Brunner has missed the last three games with the injury. Prior to getting hurt, the early-season sensation had slowed down considerably, notching just one goal in his last 16 games. Brunner is expected to play on a line with Valtteri Filppula and Daniel Cleary on Thursday.

Damien Brunner missed his third straight game with a hip flexor injury.

Brunner got off to a hot start in the NHL as he carried over his outstanding play from Switzerland but has only one goal in his last 16 games after scoring 10 in his first 19. Consider him day-to-day.
Apr 8 - 7:57 AM

Damien Brunner's previously undisclosed problem is a hip flexor injury.

Brunner wasn't able to play on Thursday and is doubtful Friday. He attempted to skate Thursday, but went off the ice after just 10 minutes. "The skating wasn't that good," Brunner said. "I tried and I felt it would be better but it didn't feel all that good. It's been actually bothering me for a couple of weeks and it just got worse the last two games. I'll see how it goes."

Damien Brunner is dealing with an undisclosed injury.

Brunner missed Wednesday's practice as a result. He's listed as day-to-day and might even play in Thursday's contest.
Apr 4 - 9:45 AM

Damien Brunner has apparently hit the wall in his first NHL season.

Brunner had 10 goals in his first 19 games but has not scored in his last 13. He was credited with a goal on Monday but it was taken away from him as he did not tip in the puck. Brunner played in the Swiss League in which the longest trip was a three hour bus ride and not like the lengthy road trips in the NHL, especially playing in the Western Conference. "I'm definitely not used to it, but there's not much thinking about it," said Brunner. "You have to get used to it pretty fast. In Canada (last week) I felt worse than I do now. I have the energy back and I feel good to go on." Next year may be a lot easier as the schedule will not be compressed and Detroit will move into the Eastern Conference.
