The New Jersey Devils have officially terminated Damien Brunner's contract.
The Devils and Brunner had the option of mutually parting ways after he cleared unconditional waivers. That freed up Brunner to sign with any NHL team, but he opted to ink a contract with HC Lugano in Switzerland. Brunner left about $1.7 million on the table by getting out of his contract early, which could have been avoided if he reported to AHL Albany after being assigned there. "He didn't report to Albany and when they don't report, you have the ability to do what we did, but there's nothing malicious in any way whatsoever and I have nothing negative to say about Damien," Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said. "Certainly, he did everything he could. It didn't work out, but it was his decision not to report, which is fine, and then we have rights that we can do and that's what we did." Dec 12 - 1:52 PM

Damien Brunner went unclaimed on unconditional waivers.

That opens the door for Brunner and the Devils to agree to terminate his contract. If they go that route as expected, Brunner will presumably play in Switzerland.
Dec 12 - 12:13 PM

Damien Brunner has been placed on unconditional waivers.

What happens next is likely the termination of his contract. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello won't talk about the move until Brunner clears on Friday. Brunner cleared regular waivers over the weekend and he was assigned to Albany of the AHL. He apparently intends to play the remainder of this season in Switzerland.
Dec 11 - 3:35 PM

The New Jersey Devils have assigned Damien Brunner to the AHL.

$1.575,000 will still count towards the Devils' salary cap. New Jersey's general manager Lou Lamoriello said that they will look accommodate Brunner with a trade. The 28-year-old has two goals and seven points in 17 games this season.
Dec 7 - 2:09 PM

Damien Brunner is still on the New Jersey roster after clearing waivers on Saturday.

Brunner and coach Peter DeBoer have not seen eye-to-eye and DeBoer looks like he is ready to cut Brunner loose. He is in the final year of his two-year deal and it wouldn't be a surprise if the Devils just released him. He has two goals and seven points in 17 games this season.
Dec 7 - 8:29 AM

New Jersey Devils forward Damien Brunner cleared waivers on Saturday.

After showing some promise in one season with the Detroit Red Wings and flashes of brilliance with New Jersey, Brunner's fallen flat as of late. It wouldn't be shocking if Brunner ends up getting traded like other borderline AHL/NHL players.
Dec 6 - 12:12 PM

Damien Brunner might stay on the Devils' active roster if he clears waivers, per GM Lou Lamoirello.

In other words, the Devils are waiving Brunner to get more options, but haven't come to a decision yet. That's perfectly reasonable given that the Devils have quite a few injured forwards right now, so they might want to see how they're progressing before deciding Brunner's fate.
Dec 5 - 12:27 PM

The New Jersey Devils have put Damien Brunner on waivers.

Brunner had a promising debut season with the Detroit Red Wings in 2013, but he hasn't lived up to the two-year, $5 million contract New Jersey inked him to. We would be surprised if anyone claims him.
Dec 5 - 12:23 PM

Damien Brunner potted a goal for the Devils on Saturday night in their 3-1 loss to the Islanders.

Brunner is a skillful winger, but he comes and goes in putting his offensive abilities to use. The goal was just his second this season, and he has points in two straight, though he has just six points on the year. Adam Larsson and Michael Ryder chipped in with the helpers.
Nov 29 - 9:55 PM

Damien Brunner, Jordin Tootoo and Peter Harrold will all be healthy scratches against Edmonton on Friday night.

Brunner's scratch is a bit surprising considering he had an assist Tuesday night against Winnipeg, however Tootoo and Harrold's seatings indicate that Coach DeBoer has noticed what the stat line tells you - they haven't contributed very much. That said, Brunner has just five points on the season himself.

Nov 21 - 7:17 PM

Damien Brunner had an assist in the Devils' 3-1 loss Tuesday night.

Brunner hasn't logged more than 12:15 minutes in any of his last four contests. He had a promising rookie season with Detroit in 2013, but he hasn't been an impact player for any sustained period of time since then. He has just five points in 14 contests in 2014-15.
Nov 19 - 9:21 AM

Damien Brunner will be a healthy scratch on Friday.

Brunner has a goal and four points in 12 games this season. It's fair to say that he hasn't lived up to his two-year, $5 million contract, which will expire this summer.
Nov 14 - 4:40 PM

Damien Brunner scored a wildly lucky goal to tie the Devils up at two against Dallas, Friday night.

Patrik Elias started by grindind his way through three Stars at the offensive blue line midway through the third with the Devils down 2-1. After falling while being forced wide by Jordie Benn, Elias punched the puck into Kari Lehtonen's skates, who accidentally kicked it to his right where Brunner came rushing in for the slam dunk. Go find a replay. The goal was Brunner's first of the season, and credit him for being there. He finished with a game-high six shots on goal over 19:14 of ice time.
Oct 24 - 11:11 PM

The New Jersey Devils will have Damien Brunner in the lineup for the first time in the 2014-15 season.

Martin Havlat tried to give it a go but couldn't do it for Saturday's game against the San Jose Sharks, one of his former teams. Brunner had 11 goals and 25 points in 60 games with the Devils last season.
Oct 18 - 6:58 PM

Damien Brunner could see his first game action of the 2014-15 season Saturday.

Brunner has been a healthy scratch the first four games of the season but with the status of Martin Havlat, who was cut on the lip for multiple stitches on Thursday, up in the air, Brunner could draw in. Stay tuned.
