At 19, center Teuvo Teravainen has outstanding offensive skills, a fact that was reiterated to the Chicago Blackhawks at their recent development camp.
The Hawks, however, don't think their 2012 first-round draft choice (18th overall) is ready for prime time just yet. While they did call on Teravainen for three games last season (no points), he'll likely begin next season with AHL Rockport. "It’s going to take a number of years. . .He’s only 19. There’s a whole group of these young players where it’s a process and you hope over the course of three or four years they’re going to be able to develop not only their strength but the endurance," Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said. "The NHL season takes a toll on your body. Hopefully, you’re playing over 100 games a year, so you’re not going to be able to make those grounds up in just a few weeks of training. It’s a process. I give him credit for taking it seriously. As a young player he’s committed to becoming strong and working at it. We just have to be patient and allow those things to take time." Jul 20 - 10:14 AM

Teuvo Teravainen still hopes to make the Chicago Blackhawks' opening game roster.

Teravainen's chances of making the team were diminished when they signed Brad Richards. That gives the Blackhawks 12 forwards signed to one-way deals, not including Brandon Saad. Still, we wouldn't dismiss the possibility of Chicago trading away a forward before the season starts to free up some cap space. If that happened, Teravainen's chances of making the team would obviously improve.

Teuvo Teravainen has been bulking up this summer.

"I feel good but it's been (a long) time without hockey so I think my body needs hockey," Teravainen said. "I'm ready this season. I can't wait." Teravainen will enter training camp with a good chance of making the team, although the addition of Brad Richards means he probably won't serve as a top-six forward. Teravainen is a great prospect and has the potential to eventually establish himself as a strong second-line center for Chicago.

Signing Brad Richards to a one-year deal has taken some of the pressure off of Teuvo Teravainen.

Teravainen has a bright future ahead of him, but he's not a safe bet to be an impact player in 2014-15. Fortunately, he won't have to be because the Blackhawks are looking pretty good up the middle at this point. "(Teravainen) is going to dictate that when he's ready to go," Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman. "We don't have to force anything."

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville is eager to see what Teuvo Teravainen can do at training camp in the fall.

"I'm sure he's going to grow (and) he's going to get stronger. I'm looking forward to seeing how he plays in camp," Quenneville said. "I expect some progress. We liked what we saw last year at the beginning of the year. He's going to make the decision for us with exactly where he's going to fit and where we're going to play him." Teravainen netted two goals in five games with AHL Rockford after he played three contests with Chicago this past season. It wouldn't be a shock if he spent most of the 2014-15 campaign in the minors, but he'll get a long look at camp.
Jun 30 - 11:35 AM

The Blackhawks won't rush prospect Teuvo Teravainen.

It wouldn't be surprising if he spent a good portion of the 2014-15 season shifting between the NHL and the AHL. "He's going to have to get stronger and playing away from the puck," coach Joel Quenneville said. "He'll adapt quickly to that." Teravainen didn't have a point in three games with Chicago this season, but he scored two goals in five appearances with Rockford in the minors.
Jun 5 - 11:48 AM

Teuvo Teravainen has been reassigned to the minors.

He will try to help Rockford qualify for the AHL playoffs. The IceHogs are competing with Rochester for the final postseason spot in the Western Conference. Teravainen played in three games for Chicago after coming over from Finland.
Apr 10 - 5:31 PM

For the seccond consecutive game Teuvo Teravainen will be a healthy scratch.

He sat out Thursday's game against Minnesota and will sit in the press box Sunday afternoon when his teammates face off against the Blues. It looks as if the Hawks determined that what Teravainen could provide was not worth buring his entry-level eligibility for next season.

Teuvo Teravainen will be a healthy scratch Thursday.

Coach Joel Quenneville plans to use the rest of the season as an education process for the 19-year-old prospect, so it's unclear how much game action he'll receive. Teravainen may play Friday night against Columbus. He doesn't have a point in three outings with the Blackhawks.
Apr 3 - 6:24 PM

Teuvo Teravainen was a healthy scratch against the Senators Friday night.

It is all part of the acclimation process to the NHL. Chicago coach Joel Quenneville has liked what he has seen from the Finnish rookie but wants him to shoot more rather than pass when he is in a scoring area. "Offensively, you think of shooting," Quenneville said. "He has the puck in some good areas there, and he looks like he wants to dish a lot of times, but think of getting it to the net yourself, and get some action off of that." Look for Teravianen to be back in the lineup Sunday against the Penguins. We love his potential so keep a close watch on him and don't be afraid to pick him up if you are in a dynasty league.
Mar 29 - 12:02 PM

Teuvo Teravainen didn't light up the stat sheet in his first NHL game Tuesday night, but coach Joel Quenneville liked what he saw.

"His awareness around the rink, both sides of the puck (and) in the faceoff circle were very strong," Quenneville said. "I thought he did a nice job. Good start." He went 7-for-7 in the faceoff dot, but didn't have a shot or a point in 11:39 of ice time.
Mar 26 - 8:34 AM

Teuvo Teravainen confirmed that he will make his NHL debut on Tuesday.

Teravainen is making the adjustment to North American hockey, so we would recommend tempering expectations in the short term. However, the 19-year-old forward is very talented and should be one of the league's top rookies next season.
Mar 25 - 12:16 PM

Teuvo Teravainen won't play for the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, but will get into action on Tuesday.

It's difficult to say how the talented and much-heralded forward will fit into the mix in Chicago, so it wouldn't be wise to add him without seeing how he may figure in. He could be especially useful in the playoffs, though.
Mar 23 - 5:24 PM

Tuevo Teravainen, who arrived in Chicago Friday, joined his new teammates for the tail end of practice.

He may need a few more practices before getting a chance to play in an NHL game. However if both Brandon Saad and Bryan Bickell are unable to play Sunday against Nashville, Teravainen could draw in. The 19-year-old is a huge talent (44 points in 49 games for Jokerit in the top Finnish league) and should be picked up in all legacy/keeper leagues by teams rebuilding without delay.

Mar 22 - 12:29 PM

Teuvo Teravainen is expected to join the Blackhawks after his campaign with Finland's Jokerit Helsinki is over.

Jokerit's campaign might end on Sunday, but they're still in the running for a playoff spot. He was taken with the 18th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Since then he's excelled in the Finnish league, scoring nine goals and 43 points in 47 games in 2013-14.
