Teuvo Teravainen is trying to make the most of his time in the AHL, but he doesn't sound happy to be there.
"I don't know if I'm happy or if I'm not happy," Teravainen said. "I'm just trying to play. It's pretty hard playing here. It's different hockey. It's not my type of hockey maybe, AHL hockey. I think there's differences with NHL hockey and AHL hockey, but I'm just trying to do my job there and try to play my best." Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman admitted that it can be harder to play in the minors, especially for young players "because it's a bit more scattered" than the NHL. Teravainen has two goals and 10 points in 17 games with Rockford this campaign. Nov 25 - 10:05 AM

With injuries to Patrick Sharp and Andrew Shaw it was reasonable to assume that top prospect Teuvo Teravainen might get a call up from Rockford of the AHL.

The Blackhawks are obviously thinking otherwise. They have called up Philip Danault and Joakim Nordstrom instead, neither of whom has Teravianen's potential. Teravainen hasn't been lights out with the IceDogs (10 points in 15 games) which might be part of the reason he was not summoned. It is disappointing for Teravainen owners just the same.

Teuvo Teravainen won't be called up as a replacement for the injured Kris Versteeg.

Versteeg will be out for three weeks due to a lower-body problem. The reason why the Blackhawks are still passing on Teravainen is because they want him to play as a center and they currently have enough depth at that position. So perhaps they would have summoned him if one of their centers had gotten hurt instead.

The Chicago Blackhawks have assigned forward Teuvo Teravainen to Rockford of the AHL.

"If I have to go there, I’ll go there and try to play my best," Teravainen said. "Maybe I get my chance at some point." Teravainen has loads of talent but Chicago is one of the deepest teams in the NHL. He will probably be called-up at some point this season.

With cut-down day approaching, the Chicago Blackhawks will need to decide if they have a roster spot available for Teuvo Teravainen.

"He started (training camp) all right, and coming off the (upper-body) injury he got up to speed quickly and we like where he’s at," said coach Joel Quenneville. Teravainen is loaded with skill but he may be forced to start the season with the Hawks’ AHL affiliate in Rockford. The Blackhawks don’t have many openings up front and would probably prefer seeing Teravainen play significant minutes in the AHL.

Teuvo Teravainen got into Chicago's lineup for the first time this preseason on Sunday.

He had been out of action since he was leveled in a team scrimmage on Sept. 20. Teravainen scored his first goal in a Hawks' uniform in the team's 5-0 win over Edmonton.

Teuvo Teravainen (upper body) won't take part in Monday's scrimmage.

He's expected to be available to play in Tuesday's preseason match against Detroit, though. Teravainen suffered an upper-body injury on Saturday during a team scrimmage when he was leveled by Cam Barker.

Teuvo Teravainen missed Chicago's scrimmages on Sunday due to an upper-body injury.

He is considered day-to-day after he was drilled by camp tryout Cam Barker on Saturday during a team scrimmage. Teravainen managed to finish the contest and he might be available to play on Monday.

Teuvo Teravainen feels ready to play in the NHL.

Whether or not Teravainen is at that level might not be the determining factor though. Barring an injury, there's no top-six forward spot open for him, so the Blackhawks might send him to AHL Rockford where he'll get significantly more minutes. "I have to earn my spot," Teravainen said. "I have a chance to make it. I just have to work hard."

Teuvo Teravainen has been working five days a week with Blackhawks strength coach Paul Goodman to add some muscle before training camp.

"The gym has been my home this summer," Teravainen said Friday via phone from Toronto. He is participating in the 2014 NHLPA Rookie Showcase and said he feels much stronger now. Teravainen tipped the scales at 169 pounds at the end of the year, but now he weighs in at around 180. It will be hard for him to crack Chicago's roster, but his goal is to play in the NHL this campaign.

At 19, center Teuvo Teravainen has outstanding offensive skills, a fact that was reiterated to the Chicago Blackhawks at their recent development camp.

However, the Hawks don't think their 2012 first-round draft choice (18th overall) is ready for prime time just yet. Teravainen is expected to begin next season with AHL Rockford. "It’s going to take a number of years. . .He’s only 19. There’s a whole group of these young players where it’s a process and you hope over the course of three or four years they’re going to be able to develop not only their strength but the endurance," Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said. "The NHL season takes a toll on your body. Hopefully, you’re playing over 100 games a year, so you’re not going to be able to make those grounds up in just a few weeks of training. It’s a process. I give him credit for taking it seriously. As a young player he’s committed to becoming strong and working at it. We just have to be patient and allow those things to take time."

Teuvo Teravainen still hopes to make the Chicago Blackhawks' opening game roster.

Teravainen's chances of making the team were diminished when they signed Brad Richards. That gives the Blackhawks 12 forwards signed to one-way deals, not including Brandon Saad. Still, we wouldn't dismiss the possibility of Chicago trading away a forward before the season starts to free up some cap space. If that happened, Teravainen's chances of making the team would obviously improve.
Jul 18 - 6:58 PM

Teuvo Teravainen has been bulking up this summer.

"I feel good but it's been (a long) time without hockey so I think my body needs hockey," Teravainen said. "I'm ready this season. I can't wait." Teravainen will enter training camp with a good chance of making the team, although the addition of Brad Richards means he probably won't serve as a top-six forward. Teravainen is a great prospect and has the potential to eventually establish himself as a strong second-line center for Chicago.

Signing Brad Richards to a one-year deal has taken some of the pressure off of Teuvo Teravainen.

Teravainen has a bright future ahead of him, but he's not a safe bet to be an impact player in 2014-15. Fortunately, he won't have to be because the Blackhawks are looking pretty good up the middle at this point. "(Teravainen) is going to dictate that when he's ready to go," Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman. "We don't have to force anything."

Jul 2 - 8:52 AM

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville is eager to see what Teuvo Teravainen can do at training camp in the fall.

"I'm sure he's going to grow (and) he's going to get stronger. I'm looking forward to seeing how he plays in camp," Quenneville said. "I expect some progress. We liked what we saw last year at the beginning of the year. He's going to make the decision for us with exactly where he's going to fit and where we're going to play him." Teravainen netted two goals in five games with AHL Rockford after he played three contests with Chicago this past season. It wouldn't be a shock if he spent most of the 2014-15 campaign in the minors, but he'll get a long look at camp.
