Ottawa prospects Cody Ceci and Matt Puempel will join the Binghamton Senators in the AHL this weekend.
The Baby Sens have three games left on their regular-season schedule and currently occupy the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. "It should be pretty exciting" said Ceci, who was the 15th overall pick in the 2012 draft. "I saw where a lot of other guys were heading to their AHL teams after their junior teams finished and I knew that Binghamton was going to the playoffs." "So once it was over (in Owen Sound), I was kind of waiting for the opportunity. Apr 18 - 11:24 AM

Cody Ceci and forward Mike Hoffman were Ottawa's final two roster cuts.

Ceci thoroughly enjoyed the abbreviated camp. "I mean, just having a locker beside (Jason) Spezza in the room in the back and then just being partnered with (Chris) Phillips of course, growing up I've always watched him, so being his D partner is something else for me because I am a local guy," he said. He will rejoin the Owen Sound Attack of the OHL after he was traded there this season by the Ottawa 67's. Hoffman will return to AHL Binghamton, where he has 22 points in 34 games this year.

Cody Ceci registered an assist for the Ottawa 67's in a 2-1 shootout victory over Kitchener Sunday.

Hockey Canada will announce the players it will invite to camp for the Canadian Junior Team set to play in the Junior Championships in December.

Cody Ceci, who was one of the last cuts from the team last year, is hoping for another invite and a chance to play for his country. "If I get invited I want to make sure I have a strong camp and control what I can control and not let any (external factors) bother me," he said. "They’re looking for me to play an offensive role, but they also need a strong two-way game, and that’s what I’ve been working on." Canada has a tremendous amount of depth on the blueline and Ceci faces stiff competition for both an invite and a roster spot.

Cody Ceci netted two goals Friday night in Ottawa's 8-6 win over Kingston.

The Senators took Ceci in the first round of the 2012 draft and the defenseman is proving why. He has five goals and 10 assists on the season. It doesn't appear like the OHL is much of a challenge for this promising player.

Cody Ceci collected four assists for the Ottawa 67's in the team's opening contest of the 2012-13 OHL campaign against Barrie.

However, the 67's dropped a 6-4 decision to the Colts in their home opener. 2013 draft prospect Sean Monahan notched two goals and a helper in the defeat. Winnipeg first-rounder Mark Scheifele also stood out in the match with one goal and three assists for Barrie in their victory.

Cody Ceci has sat out the early part of training camp with the OHL's Ottawa 67's because he is dealing with strep throat.

The team started scrimmages on Thursday while Ceci, who said he's lost about five pounds, watched from the other side of the glass. He said he might be able to participate in off-ice workouts on Friday. 67's coach and GM Chris Byrne isn't worried though because Ceci has played "a whack of hockey in the summer" already with the Senators' prospect camp and the Canada-Russia Challenge.

Cody Ceci jumped at the chance to sign an entry-level deal with the Senators because he did not want to get caught up in any potential changes to first-year contracts once the new CBA is finalized.

The young defensemen was also born in Ottawa and plays for the Ottawa 67's in the OHL, so agreeing to terms with his hometown NHL team was a special moment. "It's a pretty great feeling," he said. "It's every kid's dream to sign that big contract. I didn't know what the plans were, but I was seeing a lot of (other) first rounders signing. There has been a lot of talk about changes to entry-level contracts." The NHL wants to extend the length of contracts for first-time players, so they will have to play more years before they can get a new deal. Senators GM Bryan Murray said that Ceci will get a chance to make the jump to the NHL at training camp.

Cody Ceci was fortunate enough to be selected by his hometown team, the Ottawa Senators.

Ottawa claimed him with the 15th overall pick. "I was just thinking they'd pick me up," Ceci said. "I'm sure it was the same feeling for my mom (Karen), as you saw her reaction there at the end. She was really excited when I wasn't moving far away from home. She likes me at home, apparently. Getting to stay there for major junior was special, for her, and getting a chance to stay there now for the NHL is something else. It will be really cool for me and my whole family." Ceci currently plays for the Ottawa 67's in the OHL.
