Pittsburgh coach Mike Johnston knows Penguins prospect Derrick Pouliot well from their days with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks.

He played four-plus years for Johnston in Portland and the new Pittsburgh bench boss believes Pouliot is ready for the NHL. "Not only his play in Portland, but the thing that convinced me the most was last year at the World Juniors," said Johnston. "I really thought Derrick was the best defenseman in the tournament. If you can play at that level on the world stage, yeah, you're ready." It's still unclear when Pouliot will be able to return from surgery on his right shoulder. He underwent the procedure on May 21 and his timetable was set at four to six months. The 20-year-old blueliner wants to be ready for training camp, but he'll probably miss the start of the season unless his recovery gets fast-tracked.

According to team officials, Derrick Pouliot is recovering on schedule from off-season shoulder surgery.

Olli Maatta is also on the mend from an off-season shoulder procedure and it's believed that he'll be back sooner than Pouliot, but it is still unclear when that will happen. Pouliot's initial prognosis indicated that he could be ready to return in late September at the earliest or miss most of November.

Derrick Pouliot (shoulder) hopes to be ready to play before the end of training camp.

Pouliot original timeline suggested that he would be ready to return in late September at the earliest and could end up missing most of November, so his current target will be challenging to meet. He admitted that at this stage, it's still tough to predict when he'll be back, but so far he feels upbeat about his recovery.

Derrick Pouliot had successful shoulder surgery.

Pouliot will be out for the next four-to-six months, which means he might not be ready for the start of the 2014-15 campaign. He had 70 points and 74 penalty minutes in 58 WHL games this season.

Pittsburgh prospect Derrick Pouliot is in Pittsburgh to get his injured shoulder looked at.

Pouliot was drafted eighth overall in the 2012 Draft and was voted the top defenseman in the WHL this season after a 17 goal and 70 point performance. He was injured in the WHL final against the Edmonton Oil Kings last week and rather than go to the Pens farm team in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he came to Pittsburgh to have the Penguins medical staff look him over.

The Penguins' front office is extremely high on prospect Derrick Pouliot and refused to trade him for established players before the NHL's trade deadline last week.

Among those turned down by the Flyers for Pouliot, according to reports, was Vancouver forward Ryan Kesler. What a defense pair Pouliot could potentially give the Pens with Olli Maatta. And Maatta can't wait for that to happen. Perhaps no one is as excited about the idea of Pouliot joining the Pens as Maatta. "I just know how good of a guy (Pouliot) is off the ice," Maatta said. "So, yeah, I'd like to have him here. He has some unbelievable skill. I saw it when we played against one another in junior hockey and at training camp.I can learn from him. I think we can help each other." Maatta, 19 and the No. 22 pick two years ago, has emerged as a Calder Trophy (top rookie) candidate. Pouliot, 20 and the No. 8 pick from 2012, is the Pens' "top prospect not in the NHL," said Tom Fitzgerald, Pittsburgh's assistant general manager.

Derrick Pouliot has 63 points in 52 games and sits second overall in scoring among defensemen in the WHL.

The Penguins first pick and eighth overall in the 2012 Draft has been surpassed on the Penguins depth chart by Olli Maatta who was taken 22nd overall in the same draft. Nevertheless, Pouliot seems to have a bright future with the Penguins as he is considered an important cog in their future.
Mar 9 - 9:44 AM

Derrick Pouliot, drafted eighth overall by the Penguins in 2012, was noticeable for a few reasons in Thursday's 4-3 shootout exhibition win against the Blackhawks.

He scored on a power play in the first period, moving in from the right point and taking a nice cross-zone feed from Chris Kunitz. He also killed penalties against Chicago, a task he took on to a greater extent last year in junior hockey. Pouliot piled up 45 points in 44 games last season with Portland in the Western Hockey League. "Like everyone else here," he said, "I'm pushing for a spot here in training camp. If not, I want it to be a hard decision for the coaches."

Pittsburgh prospects Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maatta aren't expected to challenge for a roster spot next season, but they are viewed as important pieces of the team's future.

"We really like how Pouliot can work the power play," GM Ray Shero said. "He's just got that great vision." He racked up 45 points in 44 games for Portland in the WHL last season. Maatta also has some offensive capabilities, which earned him 38 points in 57 games with London of the OHL, and he plays a shutdown role with his junior club. They both can still return to the CHL in 2013-14.

Derrick Pouliot has agreed to an amateur tryout contract to play for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL.

Fellow Pittsburgh prospects Olli Maatta and Scott Harrington are also with the Baby Penguins during the club's playoff run. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton trails Syracuse 2-1 in the Eastern Conference Finals of the AHL playoffs. Pouliot just represented Portland in the Memorial Cup Championship, where his Winterhawks were defeated by the Halifax Mooseheads for junior hockey's top prize.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have taken Derrick Pouliot, with the eighth selection in the 2012 draft, after receiving the pick in a big trade that saw Jordan Staal head to Carolina.

Pouliot is one of the best skaters in the draft. He doesn't have elite speed, but his balance and ability to change direction are unmatched by most. His tremendous poise helps him excel at skating the puck out of trouble. Pouliot also has offensive upside evidenced by his 59 points in 72 games with Portland this season. His skating ability allows him to lead the rush and he almost always makes the right first-pass. He even contributed on special teams, leading the power play unit for his club. However, Pouliot must continue to work on his defensive game, while adding more strength and muscle to his frame. Nevertheless, he's produced at all levels he has competed in and will be a nice addition to the Penguins' back end.
