Derrick Pouliot scored once and added two assists to lead Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to a 5-0 win over Springfield.
Pouliot had a weak training camp and was sent to the minors to the surprise of many who thought that the offensive talent of the defenseman was enough to keep him in the NHL. He now has a goal and five points in five games and could get the recall soon if the Penguins pick up any injuries on the blueline. Oct 24 - 9:12 AM

It appears as though a weak training camp offering doomed Derrick Pouliot, as the Pittsburgh Penguins sent him to the AHL on Saturday.

He has solid offensive potential, at least if he can crack the lineup, which obviously hasn't been the case. Perhaps this is another example of a team sending a "wake-up call," but either way, hold off on any kind of investment in the scoring blueliner.
Oct 3 - 1:14 PM

Derrick Pouliot has been on the ice for five goals against in only two preseason games.

Pouliot has nice offensive skills but if he cannot play defensively then he will have problems cracking the Penguins blueline. "He's not a regular NHL player," coach Mike Johnston said. "He's a guy who's played games. The first period, he wasn't getting to loose pucks quick. The other thing about his game that I see is he's hanging on to pucks way too much. He's got to move it faster and move it cleaner." Pouliot played 34 games for the Penguins last season and it was hoped he could be a top-four blueliner but he must improve defensively. His fantasy value is high if he makes the team as he should play on the second power play but nothing is guaranteed at this time.

Derrick Pouliot wants to be ready to play from day one of rookie camp.

"I'm here to prove to the coaches that I'm ready to go from Day 1," Pouliot said after the Penguins rookies beat Montreal, 4-3, in overtime in the tournament opener Friday. "This is Day 1 for us." The 21-year-old has yet to play a full season in the NHL, but he has the upside to be a big piece of Pittsburgh's defense going forward. He had two goals, seven points and minus-11 rating in 34 NHL games last season.

Derrick Pouliot has been committed this offseason to getting into the best physical shape entering the new season.

The 21-year-old has a prime opportunity in front of him and is expected to become an integral part of the Penguins defense moving forward. He has worked out with ex-Penguin Gary Roberts and revamped his diet. "I think I’m capable of being a reliable defender in this league. I think I can produce even more offensively, too," Pouliot said. "It’s really about taking a two-way role, not giving up anything and creating some chances for us. I’ll come into camp in shape and be able to handle some more minutes and keep up with those guys." Pouliot had seven points in 34 NHL games last year, with 24 points in 31 AHL contests.
Jul 18 - 11:01 PM

Look for Derrick Pouliot to have a prime role on the Pittsburgh Penguins blueline next season.

The defenseman, who was selected eighth overall in the 2012 Draft, is ready to be a full-time member on the Penguins as Pittsburgh will likely lose Paul Martin and Christian Ehrhoff to free agency on July 1. Pouliot split the season between Pittsburgh and their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and had two goals and seven points in 31 NHL games. Expect to see Pouliot get plenty of power play time and get 30-35 points in 2015-16, with more expected from him in the future.

Apr 19 - 8:51 AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins won't get Derrick Pouliot back in their defensive mix against the New York Rangers in Game 2.

Pouliot has the kind of offensive ability that could come up big with Kris Letang sidelined, but it's just not meant to be for the Penguins' defense, at least not on Saturday.
