Derrick Pouliot has been sent to the minors.
Before that happened, Pouliot was inserted into the lineup on Wednesday as a result of Kris Letang's (possible concussion) absence. Pouliot ended up logging 20:14 minutes in the 3-2 shootout loss to Chicago. Given that the NHL has entered the All-Star break, the Penguins had no reason to keep him in the short-term. The rookie defenseman will take the injured Kris Letang's spot on the blue line Wednesday night. He will pair up with Rob Scuderi and may see some time on the power play as well. He has the potential to put up major points from the blue line so keep an eye on him to see if he holds a place in the Pens lineup going forward.

Derrick Pouliot has been recalled by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 21-year-old defenseman has already appeared in seven games for the Pens this year, chipping in a goal and two assists. He has some offensive upside and is worth monitoring in deep fantasy leagues. The Penguins sent down forward Bobby Farnham to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to make room for Pouliot.

Derrick Pouliot and Andrew Ebbett will sit out Saturday's contest versus Montreal.

Derrick Pouliot and Bobby Farnham will be healthy scratches Wednesday night agianst the Boston Bruins.

It's strange to see the Penguins with so many extra healthy bodies, but that appears to be the case. Farnham has no fantasy value, and while Pouliot hasn't quite blossomed just yet, is still worth stashing if you're in a deep pool.

Derrick Pouliot and Bobby Farnham will be healthy scratches on Saturday night against the Canadiens.

You don't need us to tell you that Pouliot is an exciting and great young defender on the vaunted Pittsburgh blue line, but you may not know that Farnham has 19 PIMs and 24 hits through 10 games thus far.

Not only did he score, but Pouliot did it on his first shot. The defenseman saw 15:07 minutes of action, including 2:28 on the power play. He was selected eighth overall in the 2012 Draft and is worth selecting in keeper pools as he had 20 points in 23 AHL games before his recall.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Derrick Pouliot from the minors.

Pouliot is probably the Penguins best prospect in the AHL and the defenseman has seven goals and 20 points in 23 games thus far. With Christian Ehrhoff questionable and Olli Maatta and Robert Bortuzzo out of action, the Penguins are in need of blueline help. He is worth picking up in keeper pools and should see some ice time on the second power play.

Derrick Pouliot is excelling offensively in the AHL.

The eighth overall pick in the 2012 draft needs to work on his play in the defensive zone before he is recalled by the Penguins but offensively, his game is at an NHL level. He has two goals and 12 points in just 14 games as he missed the first couple of weeks recovering from off-season shoulder surgery. He has the potential to be a great offensive defenseman in the NHL in seasons to come.

Pouliot had been recovering from a shoulder surgery he underwent in May. He's got the potential to be a great offensive defenseman and it wouldn't surprise us if he makes his NHL debut before the season's over.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Johnston knows Penguins prospect Derrick Pouliot well from their days with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks.

He played four-plus years for Johnston in Portland and the new Pittsburgh bench boss believes Pouliot is ready for the NHL. "Not only his play in Portland, but the thing that convinced me the most was last year at the World Juniors," said Johnston. "I really thought Derrick was the best defenseman in the tournament. If you can play at that level on the world stage, yeah, you're ready." It's still unclear when Pouliot will be able to return from surgery on his right shoulder. He underwent the procedure on May 21 and his timetable was set at four to six months. The 20-year-old blueliner wants to be ready for training camp, but he'll probably miss the start of the season unless his recovery gets fast-tracked.

According to team officials, Derrick Pouliot is recovering on schedule from off-season shoulder surgery.

Olli Maatta is also on the mend from an off-season shoulder procedure and it's believed that he'll be back sooner than Pouliot, but it is still unclear when that will happen. Pouliot's initial prognosis indicated that he could be ready to return in late September at the earliest or miss most of November.

Derrick Pouliot (shoulder) hopes to be ready to play before the end of training camp.

Pouliot original timeline suggested that he would be ready to return in late September at the earliest and could end up missing most of November, so his current target will be challenging to meet. He admitted that at this stage, it's still tough to predict when he'll be back, but so far he feels upbeat about his recovery.
