The Vancouver Canucks have sent Brendan Gaunce to the minors.
The 21-year-old was drafted in the first round in 2012. He spent the entire 2014-15 season with Utica of the AHL where he had only 11 goals and 29 points. If he is called up this season, it will be as an injury replacement. Oct 3 - 10:32 AM

Brendan Gaunce scored two goals for Vancouver’s Young Stars team.

An important first step for him as he looks to make a strong impression to make the NHL roster. "I would not come outright and say I should be on the (Canucks)," Gaunce said. "But I definitely feel I can play at the NHL level. I want the Canucks to believe in me as well." There is some opportunity for younger players to make this roster, but the Canucks won’t rush their 21-year-old. Gaunce had 11 goals and 29 points last season.

The Vancouver Canucks have sent former first round pick Brendan Gaunce to Utica of the AHL.

The Canucks selected Gaunce with the 26th pick of the 2012 Draft. He had 31 goals and 72 points in 65 games split between Belleville and Erie of the OHL and then managed five goals and 16 points in 14 playoff games for the Otters. He needs at least a season of seasoning in the minors but could contend for a job with the Canucks as early as next year.

Brendan Gaunce had two assists on Sunday after he was moved from center to the left wing.

The Canuck prospects down the Edmonton Oiler prospects 4-2 on Sunday with Gaunce getting Vancouver started setting up a goal that cut the Oilers lead in half at 2-1. He had struggled early on as he was less than stellar in the Canucks first rookie game after a rather mediocre performance during Team Canada's U20 get-together in August in which coach Brent Sutter said that Gaunce was "a ways away from being a pro player". He has not been using his size and physicality and that has been an issue with Team Canada and early in camp. Gaunce projects to be a third line center with the chance to move up to the second line at a certain point in his career. He had 33 goals and 60 points in 60 games with Belleville of the OHL last season.

Canadian national junior coach Brent Sutter was not impressed with Vancouver Canucks prospect Brendan Gaunce during the national team's get-together last month.

"He’s a big guy and he’s a ways away from being a pro player yet," Sutter said. "He’s a very defensive-oriented guy as far as understanding the game. He knows his limits offensively, but he’s a big power forward who’s a decent skater and he’s got some good skills. But I see him more as a third- or fourth-line player in the National Hockey League, more of a power guy." Gaunce's response: "Everyone has their opinions and he is obviously an established coach for the NHL and junior levels, and he knows what he’s talking about. And if that’s his opinion, that’s his opinion, I can’t change that. I think I’m pretty close. I mean, I want to see at camp and see day to day how I do, but I think I’m pretty close and I think I prepared this summer to be pretty close. That’s not something I should probably comment on further because I’m not a coach and I don’t want to comment on someone else’s opinion."

Center Brendan Gaunce is a possibility to make the Vancouver Canucks next season, though the 19-year-old still has a year’s junior elegibility remaining and has yet to attend an NHL training camp.

Speaking about Gaunce, Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis said: "He’s going to be given every opportunity to make our hockey team. He’s really moved along. He’s very responsible at the junior level. But he’s a young player and when you start introducing young players into your lineup, people need to be patient. He and others are going to be given great opportunities and we’ll see what they do with them." Gaunce is an intriguing prospect because he already has an NHL body – 6-foot-2, 215-pounds.

Brendan Gaunce has been taken by the Vancouver Canucks with the 26th selection in the 2012 draft.

Gaunce has one of the best work ethics in the draft class. He is a high-character player and a fierce competitor, willing to play at both ends of the ice. He was used in almost every situation this past season with Belleville and was one of the most valuable players in the OHL. He doesn't excel in any particular area in his offensive game, but he still managed to produce at a point per game pace in the 2011-12 campaign. He projects to add secondary scoring at the NHL level, which would be especially helpful for an already deep Vancouver team. The biggest question mark with Gaunce is his skating, as he doesn't possess great speed. However, he makes up for it by doing all the little things that NHL teams covet. Look for Gaunce to have an impact as a consistent two-way forward at the next level.
