The Lightning are being very cautious with their 2012 first-round pick Slater Koekkoek.

He has yet to be cleared for contact after his second labrum surgery, thus he isn't participating in the team's development camp. "It's been pretty hard," Koekkoek said of the medical issues and seemingly constant rehabbing that limited him to 68 games the past two seasons. "Every day I work hard to keep the dream of playing in the NHL. That's all I think about. That's all I want and, hopefully, it can come true here soon." Koekkek projects as a top-pair defenseman and he will play in the OHL next season. The 19-year-old had 29 points there last season and the Lightning hope he is cleared for contact by training camp.

He generated six goals and 28 points in 40 games with Peterborough this season prior to being traded to Windsor, where he had one assist in two contests.

The defenseman (and 10th pick of the 2012 draft) has five tallies and 25 points in 35 games so far this season, although his -22 rating is a drawback. Still, the Tampa Bay Lightning must at least be pleased with his offensive production.

Koekkoek was selected 10th overall in the 2012 Draft despite the fact that he missed a significant portion of last season with a torn labrum. The Tampa Bay Lightning have taken Slater Koekkoek with the 10th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Koekkoek is another player in the second-tier of defensemen in the draft, but he still remains a solid blueline prospect due to his raw talent. Before his season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, he was one of the top scoring defensemen in the OHL. He was used on the power play and has a good point shot. He likes joining the rush rather than make the first pass, but he doesn't have the best puck skills. He needs to improve his quickness and turns on the ice, as he tends to lose body position on the defensive end. It's definitely a surprise that he went this early in the draft.
