The Tampa Bay Lightning demoted defenseman Slater Koekkoek to the AHL, possibly a good sign of improving health for Victor Hedman.
As a first-rounder, Koekkoek has potential, but he's better off with a prominent role at a lower level rather than a fringe spot in the NHL. He received less than 11 minutes of ice time and suffered a -1 in his only game this season. Oct 18 - 1:22 PM

Slater Koekkoek will make his season debut for the Lightning as they take on the Sabres on Saturday night.

For all the hype Koekkoek comes with, his production from the blue line was cut in half when he transitioned from the OHL to the AHL, 53 to 26. The 21-year-old defender will pair with Andrej Sustr to make up the Bolts' third pairing, and will have much to prove.

Slater Koekkoek has impressed coach Jon Cooper.

"He's defending much better than I expected for this being his first two games (in the NHL)," Cooper said before Saturday's contest. "He hasn't shown jitters, shown quite a bit of confidence. Even when things haven't gone his way, he hasn't been afraid to try it again. He's done a heck of a job." The 21-year-old rookie made his NHL debut on Mar. 31 and he's appeared in three games with the Lightning. Koekkoek doesn't have any fantasy value at this time.

Slater Koekkoek is excited to be healthy for Tampa's rookie camp.

The young defenseman has finally recovered from three shoulder injuries that required surgery and that kept him off the ice for parts of the last three seasons. When healthy Koekkoek has demonstrated considerable offensive abilities for a rearguard. In 62 games with Windsor of the OHL last season he registered 53 points. That makes Koekkoek a legitimate prospeect to us. Keep an eye on him during the Bolts' training camp to see if he can nab a spot on the team's blueline. It's a longshot we admit, but his talent warrants the look.

He injured himself in a fight will playing for the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL. Koekkoek has a history of shoulder injuries as he has been shut down the past two seasons as he has needed surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Tough break for a kid who has talent but may be too brittle to play in the NHL.

The Lightning are being very cautious with their 2012 first-round pick Slater Koekkoek.

He has yet to be cleared for contact after his second labrum surgery, thus he isn't participating in the team's development camp. "It's been pretty hard," Koekkoek said of the medical issues and seemingly constant rehabbing that limited him to 68 games the past two seasons. "Every day I work hard to keep the dream of playing in the NHL. That's all I think about. That's all I want and, hopefully, it can come true here soon." Koekkek projects as a top-pair defenseman and he will play in the OHL next season. The 19-year-old had 29 points there last season and the Lightning hope he is cleared for contact by training camp.
