Tampa Bay prospect Slater Koekkoek will require a second shoulder surgery that will keep him on the shelf for four to six months.

Koekkoek had the same surgery on the same shoulder last season. "The first procedure he had, it failed, so he needs to have it redone," said Lightning GM Steve Yzerman. He generated six goals and 28 points in 40 games with Peterborough this season prior to being traded to Windsor, where he had one assist in two contests.

Slater Koekkoek scored a goal on Sunday, yet Peterborough lost to Barrie 4-1 anyway.

The defenseman (and 10th pick of the 2012 draft) has five tallies and 25 points in 35 games so far this season, although his -22 rating is a drawback. Still, the Tampa Bay Lightning must at least be pleased with his offensive production.

Slater Koekkoek will miss two weeks after suffering a shoulder injury on Thursday.

Koekkoek was hit in an OHL preseason game by Boone Jenner and fell awkwardly into the boards, suffering a deep bone bruise. Koekkoek was selected 10th overall in the 2012 Draft despite the fact that he missed a significant portion of last season with a torn labrum. He is an offensive threat from the blueline so he is worth looking at in keeper leagues, although he is a few years away from making an impact in the NHL.

Slater Koekkoek sustained a shoulder injury during a preseason game on Thursday, but it's not serious.

Koekkoek, who is getting ready to play for OHL Peterborough, has a deep bone bruise. That's great news for Koekkoek, who had to undergo shoulder surgery in 2011-12 because of a torn labrum. The Tampa Bay Lightning took Koekkoek with the 10th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have taken Slater Koekkoek with the 10th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Koekkoek is another player in the second-tier of defensemen in the draft, but he still remains a solid blueline prospect due to his raw talent. Before his season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, he was one of the top scoring defensemen in the OHL. He was used on the power play and has a good point shot. He likes joining the rush rather than make the first pass, but he doesn't have the best puck skills. He needs to improve his quickness and turns on the ice, as he tends to lose body position on the defensive end. It's definitely a surprise that he went this early in the draft.
