Michael Matheson earned an assist in Florida's 4-3 overtime loss to the Islanders in Game 3 on Sunday night.

Apr 18 - 10:13 AM

Michael Matheson will be a healthy scratch in Game 1 against the New York Islanders.

The 22-year-old is one of Florida's top prospects, but he played just three NHL games this season. If the Panthers need a shakeup at some point in the series, they could turn to the young defenseman for a spark. Greg McKegg and Quinton Howden will also be scratched. Steve Kampfer and Vincent Trocheck are out with injuries.

Apr 14 - 8:01 PM

Michael Matheson was called up from the minors Saturday.

The blueliner was a plus-one in 22:01 of action. It was his third NHL game this season. Matheson is a puck-moving defenseman who was drafted in the first round, 23rd overall in 2012. He had eight goals and 20 points in his first full AHL season with Portland as he played in 54 contests. He likely will be in the Florida lineup next season.

Michael Matheson will be scratched against Arizona on Thursday night.

Matheson is a puck-moving defenseman with a considerable amount of upside, however this is not his time. There is no reason to pick Matheson up at this point but we would keep an eye on him in the future.

Feb 20 - 10:15 AM

Michael Matheson has been called up by the Florida Panthers.

Taken with the 23rd overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Matheson might become a great defenseman, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be a worthwhile fantasy asset in standard leagues. He's been limited to five goals and 14 points in 43 AHL contests this season, so at very least we don't recommend picking him up in single season leagues.
Feb 19 - 12:39 PM

Michael Matheson has been sent down to the minors.

The Panthers also assigned Shane Harper and MacKenzie Weegar to Portland of the AHL. Matheson was expected to spend most of the upcoming season in the minors, but he could be in line for a promotion if a call up is required. He has great skating ability and offensive instincts.

Florida Panthers prospect Michael Matheson scored the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat the Nashville Predators 3-2 on Sunday night.

Matheson was a first round pick of the Panthers in 2012 and has spent the last three years at Boston College. He is highly regarded within the Panthers organization. Keep your eye on him as training camp progresses. The other goal scorers for the Panthers were Alexander Barkov and Shane Harper. This was the second of two split-squad games between these two teams on Sunday.

The Panthers expect to have defenseman Michael Matheson full-time at the NHL level in 2016.

Depending on how the 21-year-old progresses at the American Hockey League, he could be a call-up this season. Matheson played five AHL games last year after three seasons at Boston College. He had 25 points in 38 games last year with BC, and two assists in the AHL. "His adjustment is going to be more on the timing of his puck decisions, things like that, said the Panthers’ director of scouting Scott Luce. "Once he adjusts to the quickness and the pace of play, he’ll be OK. The thing is, will it come immediately or will it take a month or two, or the whole season? He will have to adjust, but all prospects have to do that.’’

Describing him as a "mover" and a "thinker," Florida Panthers management provided a positive comparison between defenseman Michael Matheson and Chicago Blackhawks star Duncan Keith.

"Mike’s a dynamic skater, moves the puck well, just like Duncan Keith, obviously," Bryan McCabe said back in early July. "I think we’d be jumping for joy if we caught lightning in a bottle like that." Florida selected Matheson 23rd overall in 2012, and he's gotten his feet wet a bit at the AHL level after his third season with Boston College. Those comparisons are lofty, but it will be interesting to see how he pans out over time (Matheson is 21).

Michael Matheson will be in attendance when the Panthers open development camp on Monday.

This will be at his first camp with Florida after spending the past three seasons at Boston College. Matheson is expected to start next season in the AHL, where he had two helpers in five outings at the end of 2014-15 while playing on an amateur tryout. He is a highly-regarded prospect and could be someone to watch at training camp.
