Michael Matheson has been a key member of Florida's top-ranked penalty killing unit.

"He's been very good with his stick, which has been one of the areas he's improved the most on," interim coach Tom Rowe said. "He breaks up a lot of plays before they even get started. Obviously, he's become one of the better penalty killers that we have." Matheson has also contributed five goals, 15 points, 104 blocks and 166 shots, while averaging 20:48 of ice time per game.

Michael Matheson has been one of Florida's best defensemen this season.

Matheson's offensive totals are modest (five goals and nine assists in 52 games), but it's his overall play that has impressed his teammates. "He is just so easy to play with," said Matheson's defense partner, Alex Petrovic. "He’s never in bad position. Even though this is his first full NHL season, I think he’s one of the best defensemen around." The 22-year-old is already averaging 20:39 of ice time.

Florida Panthers defensemen Michael Matheson and Aaron Ekblad both made four shots on goal in a 4-0 loss to the Boston Bruins Saturday night.

In the last four games the Panthers have played against the Bruins they have come up short every time. In four games they have only scored five goals with a grand total of zero being added tonight. Surprisingly, the defense had the best luck getting pucks to the net with Matheson and Ekblad both making four shots on goal. Their combined eight shots made up 32% of the 25 total for the team. Matheson had the highest time on ice of the team with 21:59 followed closely by Ekblad with 21:29. Both defensemen have shown the ability to score with seven and three goals the season respectively, but nothing was getting past Tuukka Rask Saturday night.

Rau has yet to produce through three games thus far, while Matheson has been a boon. The young defender Matheson has two goals and four points with nine blocks and five hits through seven games. It doesn't seem as though he's hurt, so this could just be a game off for the 22-year-old.

Michael Matheson is confident in his game heading into the 2016-17 season.

Matheson played three regular season games and two playoff games with the Panthers last year and he looked pretty comfortable doing so. The 22-year-old also represented Team Canada (and won gold) at the World Hockey Championship during the off-season. "I’m happy I was able to get the opportunity to play last year," said Matheson. "It definitely gives me a lot of confidence heading into this year. I was happy with how I played, it was pretty cool being able to play in the playoffs. While I was playing, I don’t think it set in that it was the NHL playoffs. But it has sunk in over the summer. Looking back I was really happy with the way I played." It would be considering shocking if Matheson fails to make the Panthers out of training camp. He'll likely be one of the top rookie blue liners in the NHL this season.
