Michael Matheson has been playing better of late.

Matheson struggled out of the game, but he's finally starting to figure things out now. "I think that the beginning of the year didn’t really go the way I wanted it to," Matheson said. "I think in the past few games, it’s been getting better and better. There’s still some room for improvement, for sure." He has no goals and three assists in 20 games this season. Matheson won't have any fantasy value, but he is one of the key pieces on that Panthers blue line.

Michael Matheson didn't play Tuesday because of an upper-body injury.

Coach Bob Boughner said Matheson should be ready to return on Friday at Buffalo. He has posted one assist in 13 matches this season.

Mike Matheson will be a healthy scratch in Tuesday's game against the Hurricanes.

He has one assist and a minus-6 rating in 13 games this season. Matheson inked an eight-year contract extension in the offseason, so the fact that he's struggled is disappointing. Jared McCann and Antti Niemi will also watch the game from the press box.

The team didn't disclose financial terms, but it's reportedly worth a total of $39 million. "He is a dynamic and intelligent defenseman with impeccable character and work ethic. Mike has developed into a difference maker on our blue line and will be an important player and leader for the Panthers for many years to come." His entry-level contract will expire after the 2017-18 season. Matheson has recorded 17 points in 86 career NHL contests.

Michael Matheson got his sixth goal of the season in Thursday's 6-2 loss to Montreal.

"It's a little bittersweet," Matheson said afterward. "It was nice to get a goal in my hometown, but looking back at the game it's one I'd like to forget and I'm sure my teammates feel the same way. We didn't come ready to play." He has posted 16 points in 76 outings.

Michael Matheson has been a key member of Florida's top-ranked penalty killing unit.

"He's been very good with his stick, which has been one of the areas he's improved the most on," interim coach Tom Rowe said. "He breaks up a lot of plays before they even get started. Obviously, he's become one of the better penalty killers that we have." Matheson has also contributed five goals, 15 points, 104 blocks and 166 shots, while averaging 20:48 of ice time per game.

Michael Matheson has been one of Florida's best defensemen this season.

Matheson's offensive totals are modest (five goals and nine assists in 52 games), but it's his overall play that has impressed his teammates. "He is just so easy to play with," said Matheson's defense partner, Alex Petrovic. "He’s never in bad position. Even though this is his first full NHL season, I think he’s one of the best defensemen around." The 22-year-old is already averaging 20:39 of ice time.

Matheson had the highest time on ice of the team with 21:59 followed closely by Ekblad with 21:29. Both defensemen have shown the ability to score with seven and three goals the season respectively, but nothing was getting past Tuukka Rask Saturday night.
