Florida Panthers defensemen Michael Matheson and Aaron Ekblad both made four shots on goal in a 4-0 loss to the Boston Bruins Saturday night.
In the last four games the Panthers have played against the Bruins they have come up short every time. In four games they have only scored five goals with a grand total of zero being added tonight. Surprisingly, the defense had the best luck getting pucks to the net with Matheson and Ekblad both making four shots on goal. Their combined eight shots made up 32% of the 25 total for the team. Matheson had the highest time on ice of the team with 21:59 followed closely by Ekblad with 21:29. Both defensemen have shown the ability to score with seven and three goals the season respectively, but nothing was getting past Tuukka Rask Saturday night. Jan 8 - 2:43 AM

Michael Matheson is confident in his game heading into the 2016-17 season.

Matheson played three regular season games and two playoff games with the Panthers last year and he looked pretty comfortable doing so. The 22-year-old also represented Team Canada (and won gold) at the World Hockey Championship during the off-season. "I’m happy I was able to get the opportunity to play last year," said Matheson. "It definitely gives me a lot of confidence heading into this year. I was happy with how I played, it was pretty cool being able to play in the playoffs. While I was playing, I don’t think it set in that it was the NHL playoffs. But it has sunk in over the summer. Looking back I was really happy with the way I played." It would be considering shocking if Matheson fails to make the Panthers out of training camp. He'll likely be one of the top rookie blue liners in the NHL this season.

Michael Matheson will be a healthy scratch in Game 1 against the New York Islanders.

The 22-year-old is one of Florida's top prospects, but he played just three NHL games this season. If the Panthers need a shakeup at some point in the series, they could turn to the young defenseman for a spark. Greg McKegg and Quinton Howden will also be scratched.
