Florida Panthers prospect Michael Matheson scored the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat the Nashville Predators 3-2 on Sunday night.

Matheson was a first round pick of the Panthers in 2012 and has spent the last three years at Boston College. He is highly regarded within the Panthers organization. Keep your eye on him as training camp progresses. The other goal scorers for the Panthers were Alexander Barkov and Shane Harper. This was the second of two split-squad games between these two teams on Sunday.

The Panthers expect to have defenseman Michael Matheson full-time at the NHL level in 2016.

Depending on how the 21-year-old progresses at the American Hockey League, he could be a call-up this season. Matheson played five AHL games last year after three seasons at Boston College. He had 25 points in 38 games last year with BC, and two assists in the AHL. "His adjustment is going to be more on the timing of his puck decisions, things like that, said the Panthers’ director of scouting Scott Luce. "Once he adjusts to the quickness and the pace of play, he’ll be OK. The thing is, will it come immediately or will it take a month or two, or the whole season? He will have to adjust, but all prospects have to do that.’’

Describing him as a "mover" and a "thinker," Florida Panthers management provided a positive comparison between defenseman Michael Matheson and Chicago Blackhawks star Duncan Keith.

"Mike’s a dynamic skater, moves the puck well, just like Duncan Keith, obviously," Bryan McCabe said back in early July. "I think we’d be jumping for joy if we caught lightning in a bottle like that." Florida selected Matheson 23rd overall in 2012, and he's gotten his feet wet a bit at the AHL level after his third season with Boston College. Those comparisons are lofty, but it will be interesting to see how he pans out over time (Matheson is 21).

Michael Matheson will be in attendance when the Panthers open development camp on Monday.

This will be at his first camp with Florida after spending the past three seasons at Boston College. Matheson is expected to start next season in the AHL, where he had two helpers in five outings at the end of 2014-15 while playing on an amateur tryout. He is a highly-regarded prospect and could be someone to watch at training camp.

Michael Matheson has signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers.

He will play for San Antonio for the rest of the season an an amateur tryout. "Michael is a talented, young, mobile, hard-working defenseman who we are pleased to have signed," said GM Dale Tallon in a statement. "Since being selected in the first round of the NHL draft in 2012, Michael has led Boston College to three consecutive NCAA appearances, while also serving as the team's captain this past season. He is another one of our top prospects who will continue to develop his game playing while playing in the American Hockey League." The 23rd overall pick in the 2012 draft had 25 points in 38 games this year with Boston College.

Due to the ongoing labor dispute between the league and the players, the Florida Panthers have cancelled their annual rookie camp and tournament.

This doesn't come as a major surprise given the current conditions, but those eager to see Panthers first-round pick Michael Matheson in action will have to wait.

Michael Matheson is expected to develop his game at the college level next season, but he has made a positive impression on Florida's brass at the team's development camp.

"He is not only a good player, but a real character guy," said director of player development Brian Skrudland. "There have been no surprises with this guy. He can skate, has the heart and the desire. He knows what he wants. He's going to Boston College, and why not? He's excited, and we're excited for him. We're looking forward to seeing this guy in the future." The mobile defender is committed to play for Boston College next year. The Panthers selected him 23rd overall in the 2012 draft.

Michael Matheson has been selected by the Florida Panthers with the 23rd pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

While his offensive numbers may not catch scouts' eyes, Matheson is known as one of the best defensive defensemen in this year's crop. He played this past season with players generally older than him but still managed to compete at a high level. He is a top-end skater and attracts teams with his ability to close the separation between himself and the opposition. He is rarely caught out of defensive position because he almost never takes risks. His offensive game needs work. He doesn't have great puck possession skills and he holds only an average shot. He is more of a first pass defenseman rather than a blueliner who will lead the rush. Nevertheless, Matheson projects to be the perfect complementary player that will fit on any blueline in the league. He should help bolster an already deep prospect pool in Florida.
