Phil Di Giuseppe scored two goals and came close to netting a hat trick in the Hurricanes' 6-1 win over Buffalo in the Traverse City prospects tournament opener for both teams on Friday.
"I was pretty excited coming in, this being my first time here," Di Giuseppe said. "It was good to get that first win with the guys." The Canes’ 38th overall (second round) pick in 2012, Di Guiseppe knows how to put the puck in the net, and will likely suit up for Carolina's AHL affiliate the Charlotte Checkers this coming season. The big, fast forward notched 78 points in 105 NCAA games and got three games of AHL experience at the end of last season. The six foot, 197 pounder will get a look at Canes' training camp, but likely needs to bulk up and gain some experience in the AHL before challenging for an NHL spot.

The Carolina Hurricanes have selected Phil Di Giuseppe with the 38th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Few players have an impact their first year in the NCAA, but Di Giuseppe had a great freshman campaign. While his numbers weren’t striking, he was a coach favourite and received regular ice-time. One of the youngest players in college hockey, Di Giuseppe is a solid skater who stays low to the ice and is strong with the puck. He couples his high-end skill with great vision and the ability to find the open man. He needs to become more disciplined on the defensive end, as he tends to leave his man at times. He could eventually develop into a two-way forward capable of playing for the Carolina Hurricanes.
