Henrik Samuelsson scored the game-winning goal for the Arizona Coyotes in a preseason victory over the Anaheim Ducks Tuesday night. His shot rang out at the 8:50 minute mark in the third period. The Coyotes beat the Ducks 2-1.

Samuelsson is getting some big league action even if it is in only in a limited capacity in the preseason. He played three games with the Coyotes in 2014-15, but spent the majority of that season in the AHL with the Portland Pirates where he scored 18 times in 68 starts. Last year, he earned three goals in 43 starts with the Springfield Falcons. Chris Mueller had the other Coyotes goal, which was scored unassisted only 52 seconds into the contest.

Arizona Coyotes GM Don Maloney announced that Henrik Samuelsson's season is over due to ankle surgery.

The 21-year-old defender managed just 16 games for AHL Springfield before getting hurt. He accumulated a goal, five points, and 10 PIMS in that time.

The Arizona Coyotes have cut Henrik Samuelsson from their training camp roster.

Samuelsson had 18 goals and 40 points in 68 AHL contests last season. He also appeared in three games with Arizona, although he's still searching for his first career NHL point.

Henrik Samuelsson is out of action with a lower body injury.

The winger played three games with Arizona last season but spent most of his time in the AHL where he had 40 points in 68 games. A first round pick of the Coyotes in the 2012 draft has a good shot of breaking with the big club out of training camp. If he does, he really should not be drafted in fantasy pools at this time.

Henrik Samuelsson spent two weeks of the summer working with a skating coach.

Samuelsson feels like he has an extra gear as a result of his efforts. Although the real test will be what he does during training camp, Coyotes GM Don Maloney has been encouraged by what he's seen from him in the prospects camp. Samuelsson had 18 goals and 40 points in 68 AHL contests as a rookie last season.

Henrik Samuelsson has been summoned by the Arizona Coyotes.

Samuelsson will presumably serve as the Coyotes' insurance policy in case Shane Doan (lower body) isn't able to play Thursday. Samuelsson has 14 goals and 35 points in 65 AHL contests in 2014-15.

The 21-year-old has played two games with the Coyotes this season. He was the team's first round pick (27th overall) in 2012.

Although Henrik Samuelsson didn't make the Coyotes' opening game roster, coach Dave Tippett is very happy with his progress.

"One of the things I mentioned to him is the difference between last year and this year is miles ahead. Miles ahead," Tippett said. "Like he might have come in last year and thought, 'Oh boy, it would be nice to make an NHL team,' and he had no idea how hard it was, and now this year he's miles ahead of there." Samuelsson was sent to AHL Portland. He had 35 goals and 95 points in 65 WHL games in 2013-14.

Henrik Samuelsson was assigned to the Portland Pirates on Saturday.

There was some thought that maybe Samuelsson could jump right from the WHL to the NHL this season, but that won’t be the case. He had 35 goals and 95 points with the Oil Kings last season. The 20-year-old was a first-round pick of the team in 2012.

Henrik Samuelsson has a good chance to bypass the minors and play with the Coyotes this season.

The hero of the Memorial Cup final was drafted in the first round of the 2012 Draft, 27th overall, and led the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 6-3 win over Guelph in the final as he potted two goals and set up three others. Samuelsson is looking forward to starting his professional career and is hoping it's with the Coyotes rather than a stint in the minors. "It's definitely a little pressure, but this is why we play the game — to get to the next level," Samuelsson said. "So it's good pressure. I don't mind it." Samuelsson could be a 25-30 point performer this season in the NHL and we suggest taking him late in keeper leagues but leaving him to the waiver wire in one-year leagues at this time.

Phoenix Coyotes GM Don Maloney was really impressed with the play of 2012 first round pick Henrik Samuelsson at the 2014 Memorial Cup final.

Well, what was there not to be impressed about as Samuelsson had two goals and five points in the 6-3 win for the Edmonton Oil Kings. "When the lights shone their brightest, he was the biggest star on the ice," Maloney said. "He's been able to have great success at the junior level without really pushing himself as hard as I think he can. And when I say that, it's just the pace that he plays at, the tempo, the shift-in, shift-out quickness of the game." Samuelsson will be in tough to make the Coyotes next season so expect to see him in the AHL, at least at the start of the season.
