The Chicago Blackhawks have assigned Ville Pokka back to AHL Rockford.
Pokka was recalled to fill in during the pre-season finale, and will begin the regular season down on the farm. The Blackhawks don't like to waste time letting players marinade in the minors, so if he gets off to a hot start expect him to return real fast. Oct 9 - 2:14 PM

The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled Ville Pokka for Saturday's pre-season finale.

With Niklas Hjalmarsson suspended, and Duncan Keith and possibly Brian Campbell getting the game off, it's just another opportunity for Pokka to prove his mettle to the team. He won't start the regular season in Chicago, but we all may see him later on.

The Chicago Blackhawks have assigned Ville Pokka to AHL Rockford.

The 22-year-old defender who came over from the New York Islanders for Nick Leddy is held in high regard, but he's yet to crack Chicago's dense blue line. Pokka remains a nice sleeper to keep an eye on in deeper leagues, though. He's posted 18 goals and 75 points over his last two seasons down on the farm. Should Chicago seek to shake things up, or reward Pokka, he has the ability to hit the ground running.

He sustained a lower-body injury at the World Championship, but he is on track to be available for Finland in September at the tournament. Pokka produced 10 goals and 45 points in 76 games with Rockford of the AHL last year.

Ville Pokka impressed Islanders coach Jack Capuano in his first preseason contest on Wednesday.

Pokka had two shots on goal in 16:44 minutes of ice time. "For a kid in his first game, he was real poised," Capuano said. "I thought he handled himself real well." If Pokka can't make the Islanders' opening game roster, then he's expected to head back to Finland rather than the AHL.

Ville Pokka registered an assist in Finland’s 3-1 loss to the Czech Republic on Friday at the World Junior Championship in Ufa.

The New York Islanders took Pokka with the 34th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft but ranked seventh amongst European skaters in Central Scouting's final rankings prior to the draft. Pokka is a good all-round blueliner with solid defensive abilities who prides himself on taking care of his own end first. It’s a little early to say, but his fantasy upside might be limited.

The New York Islanders took Ville Pokka with the 34th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Pokka grabbed the attention of scouts at the World Junior Championships, where he stepped in for injured teammate Olli Maatta and handled the additional responsibilities successfully. He is a calm blueliner and prides himself on taking care of his own end first. Pokka may be the best among the defencemen prospects at making the first pass. He doesn’t have ideal size, but his strong hockey sense helps him outsmart opponents. He must improve his skating because he is susceptible to faster forwards who can turn the corner on him. He's another valuable prospect for the Islanders as they attempt to bolster their defensive corps.
