Ville Pokka impressed Islanders coach Jack Capuano in his first preseason contest on Wednesday.

Pokka had two shots on goal in 16:44 minutes of ice time. "For a kid in his first game, he was real poised," Capuano said. "I thought he handled himself real well." If Pokka can't make the Islanders' opening game roster, then he's expected to head back to Finland rather than the AHL.

Ville Pokka registered an assist in Finland’s 3-1 loss to the Czech Republic on Friday at the World Junior Championship in Ufa.

The New York Islanders took Pokka with the 34th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft but ranked seventh amongst European skaters in Central Scouting's final rankings prior to the draft. Pokka is a good all-round blueliner with solid defensive abilities who prides himself on taking care of his own end first. It’s a little early to say, but his fantasy upside might be limited.

The New York Islanders took Ville Pokka with the 34th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Pokka grabbed the attention of scouts at the World Junior Championships, where he stepped in for injured teammate Olli Maatta and handled the additional responsibilities successfully. He is a calm blueliner and prides himself on taking care of his own end first. Pokka may be the best among the defencemen prospects at making the first pass. He doesn’t have ideal size, but his strong hockey sense helps him outsmart opponents. He must improve his skating because he is susceptible to faster forwards who can turn the corner on him. He's another valuable prospect for the Islanders as they attempt to bolster their defensive corps.
