Wings assistant GM Ryan Martin is impressed by the progress Martin Frk has made.
"Coming into his pro career, he wasn't used to the pro style, wasn't used to not playing with the puck," Martin said. He spent some time in the ECHL over the previous two seasons and it helped him improve his game. "Marty is a rink rat, wants to get better at his craft," Martin said. "He put in the time to get better. He really responded to Todd Nelson's style. He's very confident in his play." In 2015-16 there was no trip to the ECHL and Frk picked up 27 goals, with 44 points, in 67 games. He won't be waiver-exempt, so the Wings will have to decide what to do with him. May 5 - 7:45 AM

Martin Frk did not have a productive start to his pro career in the minors this past season.

In 50 games with Grand Rapids of the AHL, he notched three goals and 12 points. He also appeared in 15 contests with the ECHL's Toledo Walleye, where he earned five goals and eight assists. "He cares," Grand Rapids coach Jeff Blashill said. "He wants to be better. He's willing to do extra work. ... He had a tough year, no doubt about it, but it gives us a lot of promise that he can have a great year next year because of the work that he seems to be willing to put in."

Peter Sidlik, who skates for Victoriaville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, registered two assists in the win. The Czech's are now 2-1 in the tourney and are second in Group A and will face off against the Swiss in a very big game on Monday.

Martin Frk registered an assist in the Czech Republic's 3-1 victory over Finland on Friday at the World Junior Championship in Ufa.

Frk was chosen in the second round by Detroit in the 2012 draft and was signed to an entry-level deal in late July. Frk’s raw skillset is intriguing from a fantasy standpoint as he has great hands. He has a very good shot and is a good puck handler. The talented winger is currently enjoying a solid season in the QMJHL playing alongside Nathan MacKinnon. He's definitely worth a look as a minor-leaguer in keeper formats.

Frk has enjoyed a great season in the QMJHL playing alongside Nathan MacKinnon with the Halifax Mooseheads and should be a key contributor for the Czech squad. Despite undergoing knee surgery that forced him to miss training camp, Frk has recorded 38 points in 28 games with Halifax.

Detroit Red Wings draft pick Martin Frk needs to work on his skating.

Frk was the Red Wings first pick in the Draft, albeit in the second round at pick 49. Frk has a very good shot and is a good puck handler, but needs work on his skating and defensive play. "We think there's a lot of upside there," said asistant GM Jim Nill of the Wings' top pick. "He was one of the top under-18 players in the Czech and we like the character he brings to the table. The skating is something he can work on, and after the injury last season (a concussion), he'll get into better shape. He's going to be a good player down the line." It should take a few years as the Red Wings do not rush their prospects.

Martin Frk has been taken with the 49th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings.

After battling back from concussion problems, Frk had a solid season with Halifax, compiling 29 points in 34 games. Frk’s raw skillset is intriguing, as he has an excellent stick and great hands. However, Frk has major consistency issues. At times he looks totally invisible on the ice. When he is engaged, however, he looks like one of the more dynamic offensive talents in the draft. Defensively, he struggles to contain his man in one-on-one situations. He also lacks defensive awareness, so he rarely disrupts passing lanes. He isn’t a very physical player, which may in part be due to his concussion injury. Frk is a project, but he could develop into a nice player for Detroit.
