Jordan Schmaltz has been summoned by the St. Louis Blues.
Schmaltz will get to soak in the playoff atmosphere, but what he likely won't do is play in a single contest. He had six goals and 36 points in 71 AHL contests in 2015-16. Apr 29 - 11:46 AM

Schmaltz unfortunately did not make his debut with the Blues during his first career call-up. However in his first season of pro hockey, he's posted three goals and 26 points in 52 games down on the farm. His demotion signals that Alex Pietrangelo will return on Sunday as well.

Jordan Schmaltz earned his first career call-up to the Blues on Sunday.

The 25th overall pick in 2012 has posted 23 assists and 26 points in 51 games during his first season as a pro with AHL Chicago. It's unclear how much playing time he'll get up with the Blues, but this is very exciting for him, fans, and the franchise nevertheless as they attempt to give younger players a bigger role.

Jordan Schmaltz has signed a three-year Entry Level Contract with the St. Louis Blues. Financial terms have not yet been released.

Schmaltz was the 25th overall pick in 2012 and has spent the last three seasons with the University of North Dakota. During that time, the right handed defender scored 13 goals and 64 points. The 21 year old Schmaltz is not expected to start the 2015-16 season with the Blues, but it shouldn't be too long before he makes his debut.

Blues director of amateur scouting Bill Armstrong thinks Jordan Schmaltz has the potential to become a top-four defenseman.

Schmaltz was taken with the 25th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. "He's got some high-end skill on the power play," Armstrong said. "That was probably one of the strongest things that we liked about him, that he can run a power play from up top. He's got some great qualities to move the puck ... really sees the ice well and he has the ability to jump up." Schmaltz could have a lot of fantasy value if he eventually lives up to his potential, but he shouldn't be counted on to contribute for a while.

The St. Louis Blues have taken Jordan Schmaltz with the 25th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Schmaltz has the potential to be the type of defenseman that fantasy owners love. He has offensive upside and could develop into a power-play quarterback for the Blues. That being said, he's a long-term project and he shouldn't be counted on to play in the NHL over the next couple of years. The Blues went a bit off the board with this one, but it's not shocking that he was taken late in the first round.
