Despite only 12 points this year, Damon Severson has been playing well in his second season.

Severson started last season with a flurry of points and saw first defense pairing time but this season he is on the second and third defense pairing and it has made a difference. "At the start of last season I was playing with Greener up until my injury. We were seeing the other teams' top lines. There's a different aspect to your game (in that role). You're playing against the other team's top line. But, at the same time, those top lines look for so much offense that, when they don't get their offense, you're able to get offense out of their missed opportunities. When they'd get off the rush and wouldn't score, I was able to jump in the play and create more offense. I think this year second and third lines aren't as much risk-takers. Those first lines have a little more leeway. If they do make a mistake they know they're going to get right back out there and make plays. Those second and third lines are a little more careful, so you get a little better back check".

The New Jersey Devils are trying to send a message to young defenseman Damon Severson with a healthy scratch.

Severson, 21, showed flashes of brilliance in generating 17 points with the Devils in 2014-15. It could be a long season for the vast majority of Devils, but the organization likely hopes to see progress from players such as Severson.

In development camp, other prospects leaned on Damon Severson because of his experience.

Of course, Severson has only 51 games of NHL experience under his belt himself. The 20-year-old performed admirably in his first season, tallying 17 points. "I'm obviously not a seasoned veteran, I've only played one year in the NHL, but I've been around here," Severson said. "I've learned things over the past year and I've enjoyed my time here, so I'm just looking forward to this year coming up. Hopefully these younger guys that I'm here with are learning from me as well as much as I can teach them."

Damon Severson scored for the Devils in their 3-2 loss to the Panthers on Saturday night.

Though the 20-year-old had not recorded a point since March 23, Severson has the makings of a good offensive blueliner. He finishes his rookie season with five goals and 17 points in 51 games. Jordin Tootoo scored the other goal, while Steve Bernier (15) and Adam Henrique (12) led the way in penalty minutes.

Damon Severson had two assists in the Devils win over Arizona Saturday.

Severson missed a chunk of the season as he was out from December 15-March 3 with a fractured left ankle. He now has four goals and 15 points in 38 games. He sees a lot of power play time and that will only increase in the years to come so think about him in the late rounds of deeper drafts next season.

Damon Severson saw his minutes go up in his second game back from an ankle injury.

Severson suffered the injury on December 15 so there is definitely some rust in his game. He is currently playing the point on the second power play behind Eric Gelinas but he should qb the first unit next season. Gelinas played 18:51 after getting in 16:21 in his first game back on Tuesday. He is worth looking at next season in deeper leagues.

Damon Severson (ankle) logged 16:21 minutes of ice time on Tuesday in his first game since Dec. 15.

"I felt pretty comfortable out there," Severson said. "I think that's the main thing with me as a player and as a person, just being confident on and off the ice and just doing my thing no matter what. The coaches put their trust in me and the management put their trust in me to put me right back in the fire and I just tried to do my thing out there and have some fun." Devils GM and interim coach Lou Lamoriello was pleased with how Severson played given how much time he missed. Severson has four goals and 12 points in 33 games this season.

Severson hasn't played since Dec. 15 and he might be eased back into the lineup. To that end, the Devils are expected to dress seven blueliners. Forwards Michael Ryder and Martin Havlat will spend the game in the press box.
