Damon Severson was the lone bright spot for the Devils on Thursday night, firing home both New Jersey goals in a 6-2 loss to Washington.

The rookie has simply been outstanding through the first four games of his NHL career with three goals and four points. The 20-year-old offensive defenseman is definitely a young gun to have on your radar going forward, as he seems to be running with his chance to play in the NHL.

Damon Severson scored his first NHL goal and added an assist against the Florida Panthers Saturday.

In only his second career game, Severson garnered his first two points of his NHL career. The 20-year-old defenseman was the big surprise in training camp and it has continued through the first couple of games, forcing the Devils to make former first round pick Adam Larsson a healthy scratch in his first two games. Grab Severson now in fantasy pools if you can.

Damon Severson earned high praise for his first NHL game.

"I thought he was fantastic, composed, not overwhelmed, made plays," Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. "When the game turned and it became 3-3, I thought he got better, which means something for a young guy." Severson was a bit of a long shot to even make New Jersey's opening game roster. He had a plus-two rating and two shots on goal in 18:39 minutes of ice time.

Perhaps the biggest surprise on the Devils' 23-man roster is Damon Severson.

Severson has managed to make the jump straight from the WHL to NHL, which is a fairly rare feat for a defenseman. That being said, it didn't come out of left field as Devils coach Pete DeBoer was predicting that Severson would be a serious contender for a spot as early as July. He's got some offensive upside, so it's worth keeping an eye on him.

Damon Severson feels like the time is right to start his NHL career.

Severson was unable to secure a roster spot during the Devils' 2013 training camp and ended up spending the 2013-14 campaign with the WHL Kelowna Rockets. "This year there are spots available, spots to be had and I feel like I'm ready to play in the NHL," he said. "I'm just trying to learn everything possible each and every day to get myself to that final destination. And you can't be complacent. You've got to be the best you can every day and you've got to be getting better each time you step on the ice." He's right about there being slots available and Devils coach Pete DeBoer has also brought Severson up as someone that will be competing for a job. That being said, Severson has a bit of an uphill battle ahead of him as he will likely have to beat out at least one of Adam Larsson, Jon Merrill, or Eric Gelinas in order to make the team's roster.
Jul 15 - 6:40 PM

New Jersey Devils coach Pete DeBoer thinks Damon Severson will compete for a roster spot during training camp.

Adam Larsson, Jon Merrill, Eric Gelinas, and Severson will be fighting for as many as three roster spots. Larsson has the inside track as he got a one-way deal and between the four, Severson is the least likely to make the squad. Still, DeBoer isn't ruling him out at this stage.
