Nikita Kucherov is just thinking about the upcoming season.
Kucherov's agent, Dan Milstein, said that his client isn't concerned with his next contract or with any lingering issues from harsh comments he had for some teammates at the end of the 2016-17 season. Kucherov spoke with Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman about his criticisms and feels they are on the same page, according to Milstein. "He hopes to have a redo this year, and that everyone stays healthy," said Kucherov's agent. "He feels this is the year for them to win the Cup. He's very excited." Milstein also thinks that it's too early to talk about the star winger's next contract. Kucherov still has two seasons remaining on his deal and he wants to stay with the team long-term. Nikita Kucherov will have much more leverage going into his next contract negotiations.

Kucherov agreed to a three-year, $14.3 million contract last October. He will have arbitration rights at the end of the 2018-19 campaign and the Lightning will be looking to buy up some years of unrestricted free agency. Kucherov is earning $4.767 million per year and that number could come close to doubling in value. Steven Stamkos is the highest-paid player on the team at $8.5 million per season.

Nikita Kucherov had some choice words for some of his Tampa Bay teammates when he spoke to Sovietsky Sport.

"Some guys overstayed in team," said Kucherov, per translation. "They've got their money and stopped working. They knew there's no competition for their positions and the organization is not going to take someone else. They played not really well this year. You can see it in their stats and way of play. When we played together and I made a pass, they even were not expecting this. That's why this season was hard for me despite good stats." Kucherov also didn't like how often changes were made to lines after Steven Stamkos was injured. He had a great year in 2016-17 with 40 goals and 85 points in 74 games, but the Lightning failed to make the playoffs.
