Nikita Kucherov's better understanding of the English language has contributed to his successful 2014-15 campaign.
"Now that Kucherov knows the language, he's completely different," coach Jon Cooper said. "He's effective on the ice, off the ice. He's a much more confident kid because he knows the language. It does have a big part of how the kids act." He's still relatively quiet, but he is communicating better with his coaches and teammates. Kucherov has been superb on a line with Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat this campaign. He has already surpassed his offensive totals from his rookie season by recording 12 goals and 29 points just 33 games into the 2014-15 campaign. Dec 19 - 9:48 AM

Nikita Kucherov might have been a bubble player entering training camp, but he has probably earned himself a roster spot after leading the preseason with six goals.

Vladislav Namestnikov, Cedric Paquette and Jonathan Marchessault have enjoyed strong camps as well and are pushing hard for spots on the Lightning. Kucherov notched nine goals and nine assists in 52 games with Tampa Bay last season.
Oct 6 - 2:21 PM

Nikita Kucherov has had a solid camp for the Tampa Bay Lightning this year. Head coach Jon Cooper thinks Kucherov is much more comfortable than he was last year.

Kucherov has scored five goals in five preseason games so far this year, and has also skated on Tampa Bay’s top line with Steven Stamkos. The Lightning called up Kucherov in November last season, and although he started off strong, he failed to show consistency as the season progressed. "You can debate whether we called him up too early last year, but I think that has served him well coming into this year," said coach Jon Cooper. "He’s from Russia, didn’t know the language very well and I think he was a little intimidated…Now he’s speaking to me in English. So you can tell he’s much more comfortable and he’s progressing. Kucherov could be an intriguing fantasy sleeper if he continues to play on Stamkos’ line throughout the regular season.

Oct 2 - 10:17 PM

Nikita Kucherov has made a very good impression on the Tampa coaching staff in three exhibition games thus far.

He is the only Lightning player to play in all of the team's three preseason contests and has looked good doing it. In Friday's 6-3 win over Dallas, Kucherov played on the top lone alongside Steve Stamkos and Ryan Callahan and skated on the Bolts' top power-play unit, scoring a goal. Tampa coach Jon Cooper wants to get a good look at Kucherov while Jonathan Drouin recovers from injury to see where the 21-year-old fits in. Thus far assistant coach George Gwozdecky has been impressed. "I think he's made another step in his progress from last year to now,’" Gwozdecky said. "Certainly there is a little bit more of an awareness of how he needs to play to be effective, not only offensively, but defensively. He's a very explosive player and one of these guys that finds seams and finds holes. He’s a very crafty player." Keep any eye on Kucherov over the next two weeks.
