Andrey Makarov was called up from the minors on Tuesday.

He served as Matthew Hackett's backup in a 4-2 loss to Detroit. The Sabres have several goaltenders injured right now, but it's late in the year and the team already has last place locked up.

Andrey Makarov turned aside 41 of 42 shots in Russia's 2-1 victory over Team USA in the 2013 World Junior Championship.

Through two contests, Canada is the leader of Group B with six points, while Russia is in second place with five points. Team USA is in third place with three points and they now need to beat Canada in regulation time on Sunday to have any realistic hope of winning the division. Meanwhile Russia will play Germany on Saturday and the expectation is that Russia will win the game by a comfortable margin. Germany has already been outscored 17-3 after matches against Canada and the United States.

Andrey Makarov was superb for Russia in the Subway Super Series.

He posted a 1-0-1 record with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .966 save percentage against Canadian juniors when he stepped between the pipes. Makarov hasn't been as consistently dominant in the WHL this year, with a 10-9-0 record, a 2.96 GAA and a .907 save percentage, but he was great over the weekend and may be turning it around. He turned aside all 42 shots he faced in last Friday's 4-0 win against Prince George and he made 30 stops in a 5-2 triumph versus Vancouver on Sunday. Buffalo signed him as an unsigned free agent in September.

Andrey Makarov had an excellent 35-save performance for Russia, but Laurent Brossoit stopped all 30 the shots he faced and even was unbeatable in a shootout as the WHL won Wednesday's Super Series game 1-0 (SO).

Brossoit was a sixth-round pick by the Calgary Flames, so he'll need to produce great performances like these fairly often to move up the depth chart. Makarov wasn't drafted at all, however, so both netminders have work to do to capture significant NHL attention. Playing well on stages like these can't hurt.

The Sabres announced the signing of Makarov to a three-year, entry-level contract last month and loaned the Russian prospect to Saskatoon to start this campaign. He's currently 4-6 on the season.
