Frederik Gauthier had 10:56 of ice time in his first NHL game.

His line was on the ice when Buffalo scored the first goal of the game, but Gauthier settled into the game in the second period. He drew a penalty in the middle frame and although the Leafs didn't score on that PP, William Nylander managed to find the back of the net just as it expired. Gauthier finished with a minus-1 rating and no shots on goal.

The Maple Leafs have recalled Frederik Gauthier from the Marlies of the AHL.

Gauthier will play Saturday night against the Sabres and will become the 11th player and the ninth in the last three weeks to make his NHL debut for the club this season. Gauthier has scored five goals and has 15 points in 52 games with the Marlies. Given his AHL stats and the fact that he will be skating on the Buds' fourth line alongside Connor Brown and Josh Leivo, Gauthier can be ignored for fantasy purposes.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are pleased with the way Frederik Gauthier has developed thus far.

"He’s an interesting paradox," assistant GM Kyle Dubas said. "A lot of people who are big on statistics and analytics say he hasn’t produced as much as some of these other guys . . . but if you look down to shot attempts and possession parts of it, he’s a guy that charts out extremely well The 20-year-old scored 16 goals and 32 points in 37 games with the Rimouski Oceanic last year.

Frederik Gauthier was forced to leave Sunday's rookie tournament game against Ottawa in the second period due to an upper-body injury.

However, it sounds like it was for precautionary reasons. "I don't think it's anything too serious," coach Gord Dineen said. "This time of year you want to be cautious (so) we pulled him from the game." Gauthier is expected to play in Rimouski of the QMJHL this campaign.

Frederik Gauthier feels physically ready to make the jump to the NHL next season.

"Yeah, I feel like I'm ready," said the Leafs' first-round pick in the 2013 draft. "I want to make the Leafs next season. That's the goal. I don't know if they have four centermen in place or not, but I'm going to go there and try to make the team and not think about it and see what happens." He just recently turned 19 years of age, so he isn't eligible to play in the AHL next year. Gauthier will either play for Toronto or for his QMJHL squad in Rimouski. He'll try to crack of the Leafs' roster out of training camp, but don't be surprised if he ends up playing another year of junior hockey.

Frederik Gauthier will show the Leafs brass what he has at the team's prospect and rookie camps, but he figures he will be returning to junior hockey next season.

Toronto's prospect camp occurs in a couple of weeks and the team's rookies will reconvene for another camp in September. Gauthier is projected to be a two-way center in the NHL and although he isn't known as being physical, he doesn't shy away from the rough stuff according to GM Dave Nonis. At 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, he could become an opposing checker with the Leafs in the future.

The Maple Leafs selected Frederik Gauthier with the 21st overall pick of the 2013 amateur entry draft.

Gauthier is a very solid two-way player, who uses his well-developed hockey sense to make plays at both ends of the ice. His mature game will translate well in the NHL, though he isn’t viewed as a game-changing prospect. Gauthier showed some offensive ability this year, scoring 22 goals and registering 60 points in 62 games in his first season with Rimouski. However, it is his defensive play that is his ticket to the NHL. He’s strong in the faceoff circle and is very effective on the penalty kill. Though he doesn’t use his 6’3" frame to physically intimidate his opponents, he understands how to use his body in the cycle game and in shielding defenders from the puck. With some more development, he projects as a prototypical second or third-line player who could be used against an opposing team’s top line. The Maple Leafs sure could use this type of player but will likely have to wait a year or two before he can contribute.
