Darnell Nurse played in his first NHL game on Tuesday.

Nurse got a chance to familiarize himself with modern-day Oilers hockey, which is to say that his team got crushed. Edmonton suffered a humbling 6-1 defeat to Los Angeles and Nurse personally finished with a minus-one rating in 18:04 minutes of ice time.

Darnell Nurse will make his NHL debut on Tuesday.

Nurse has the potential to be a great defenseman, especially from a fantasy perspective. However, we recommend tempering your expectations for the 2014-15 campaign. He might not end up getting that much playing time with Edmonton this season and even if he does, it's likely that he'll endure some growing pains along the way.
Oct 14 - 2:17 PM

Darnell Nurse could make his NHL debut as early as Saturday.

Nurse was a healthy scratch on Thursday but coach Dallas Eakins won't want to keep him in the press box too long. Look for Brad Hunt to be a healthy scratch if Nurse gets into the lineup.
Oct 11 - 7:00 AM

Darnell Nurse has made the Edmonton Oilers' opening game roster.

Nurse will get a nine-game trial with Edmonton before they decide whether or not they want to keep him for the full campaign. Nurse has the potential to be a superb fantasy contributor given his blend of physical play and offensive talent.
Oct 6 - 5:46 AM

Darnell Nurse is expected to start the season with the Edmonton Oilers.

According to Bob McKenzie of TSN, Nurse will get a nine-game stint with the big club and the Oilers will then decide if he is ready to spend the entire season in the NHL. The 19-year-old has enormous upside.
Oct 5 - 1:01 PM

Darnell Nurse could start the season with the Edmonton Oilers.

Nurse was considered a bit of a longshot at the start of camp as the Oilers wanted to let him play a lot at the junior level, but an injury to Nikita Nikitin gives Nurse an opportunity for a short trial in the NHL. "I feel like I'm ready to play in this league," Nurse said. "But what I think and what other people might think are two different things. It's up to management." Stay tuned.
Oct 4 - 7:00 AM

Darnell Nurse may be up against it in making the Edmonton Oilers this season.

Nurse was selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2013 Draft and was sent back to junior hockey last season where the defenseman had 50 points and 91 penalty minutes in 64 games. The Oilers have realized that there was a lack of depth on their blueline and as a result, signed Mark Fayne Nikita Nikitin and Keith Aulie in the off-season. These signings will make it tough for Nurse to crack the lineup this season. "If I come in ready and play myself into a spot they're not going to take it away from me," Nurse said. "It's totally up to me to come out and prove myself. I can say anything I want, but if I don't go on the ice and prove it it's all for nothing."
Sep 13 - 7:23 AM

The Edmonton Oilers would like Darnell Nurse to get more seasoning before he plays at the NHL level.

Nurse had 50 points and 91 penalty minutes in 64 games with the OHL Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in 2013-14. He was taken with the seventh overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
Jun 17 - 9:20 AM

Darnell Nurse has been returned to the OHL Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

Nurse wasn't expected to make the Oilers' opening game roster, but he made the Oilers' decision difficult with his strong play over the preseason. "I came in as a prepared as I could," he said. "I was fueled by the fact that so many people said I wasn't good enough to keep up at this level. I proved a few people wrong, but I still have a lot of room to grow as a player and as a person." Nurse was taken with the seventh overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Darnell Nurse is making it awfully hard for the Edmonton Oilers to send him back to junior hockey with his play in the preseason.

Nurse was selected seventh overall by the Oilers in the 2013 Draft and coach Dallas Eakins will have a tough time sending back to Sault Ste. Marie. "His job is to keep screwing up our plans," Eakins said. "That's the problem with those 18-year-olds. He's definitely getting better every day right now and we've just got to wait and see if he plateaus or keeps getting better." When you add the very talented Nurse to Oscar Klefbom and Justin Schultz, the Oilers blueline is definitely looking promising for years to come. Expect Nurse to get nine games at the NHL level but the Oilers should send him back to junior for plenty of ice time and a chance to represent Canada at the U20 World Championships. All this goes out the window if he continues to play as well as he has thus far.

Defensemen Darnell Nurse and Oscar Klefbom will take part on Edmonton's 2013 Young Stars Classic roster.

Nurse was taken with the seventh overall pick in the 2013 draft, while Klefbom is believed to be close to challenging for a roster spot with the Oilers. They should be interesting players to watch prior to joining Edmonton for training camp.

Darnell Nurse is trying to put on some weight this summer.

Nurse stands at an imposing 6-foot-4 and weighs 192 pounds. "I don’t want to change what’s got me to this point. I want to stick with what’s worked," he said, "but it’s been real good for me to put on some weight and I’m at home, so I've got my mom’s cooking and the fridge is always full. All I can do is eat as much as I can and go to the gym and work as hard as I can every day. As long as I’m strong, I’ll be OK." Nurse recently signed an entry-level contract with Edmonton. He's going into the Oilers' training camp with a legitimate shot of making the team.

Edmonton Oilers sign Darnell Nurse to entry-level contract.

Nurse was the seventh overall pick in June's draft and was considered potentially the top defenseman in this year's class behind Seth Jones. Nurse still needs to add weight and work on his offensive game, but there's a chance he could make the Oilers out of training camp this fall. However, he's unlikely to have any sort of fantasy impact this season.
Thu, Jul 25, 2013 11:31:00 AM

The Edmonton Oilers have selected Darnell Nurse with the seventh pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Tall, tenacious and tough to beat, Darnell Nurse is one of the elite shutdown defensemen in this year’s draft class. In 2012-13, Nurse’s second OHL season, his offensive output exploded from 10 to 41 points, as he played big minutes on the Greyhounds’ top pairing and established himself as a defensively sound leader with excellent skating abilities and a fiery physical edge. Nurse needs to beef up his lanky frame and improve his offensive instincts and capabilities if he hopes to be a scoring threat in the NHL. His on-ice skills are polished and if he has a strong off-season in the weight room, he could crack an NHL roster this spring with the potential of earning a top four spot in the near future. The Oilers already have plenty of skilled forwards and getting Nurse will help them become a far more balanced team in the long run.
