The Edmonton Oilers could have trouble placing Darnell Nurse in their lineup.
The 21-year-old blueliner was asked to do too much too soon, with the Oilers last season and ended up playing too many minutes in his 69 NHL games. Nurse is going to be a good one but the Oilers can`t risk losing him by playing him in situations that can hurt his development. "I look at Darnell as a five-tool D-man. His skating ability is exceptional. He’s got a bite and a tenacity to him and there’s more offensively there," said coach Todd McLellan. "We have to let him feel good about that, and defensively, he’ll improve. We have an all-around defenceman who can play any which way. Rugged. Or a skill guy. He has the tools for that. Physically, he’s bigger and stronger, but that’s Mother Nature helping out. In Darnell’s case, it’s not about his strength, it’s about reading and reacting (as a D-man). I think he can have a big year for us." Nurse could be a top pairing defenseman this season but it`s better for his development to be one peg down from there. Sep 25 - 7:07 AM

Darnell Nurse will complete the 2015-16 campaign in the minors.

He spent most of the season with Edmonton and will get some extra playing time now that the Oilers' year is over. Nurse picked up 10 points and 60 penalty minutes in 69 games with Edmonton. He has one assist in six appearances with Bakersfield.
Apr 11 - 4:37 PM

Darnell Nurse finished his rookie campaign on a high note.

Through 69 games Nurse posted three goals and 10 points, including his final tally during Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to Vancouver. It's easy to see why the club is so excited by him, hopefully he can avoid the sophomore slump.
Apr 10 - 2:38 AM

Darnell Nurse is likely to play Saturday in the season finale after taking a puck to his neck against Vancouver.

Nurse was blocking a shot in the first period when the injury occurred. "Just got a puck in the throat," said Nurse. "Still scary when it hits your Adam’s apple. Could have been a lot worse; it’s just a little swollen and some vocal chords are messed up." Nurse has plenty of upside and will likely be the Oilers one or two defenseman for years to come.
Apr 9 - 8:08 AM

Darnell Nurse was a stellar plus-four Thursday.

It was his best game as an Oiler as his previous best was a plus-two effort. The defenseman has a lot of upside and he fought Micheal Haley early in the match. "He can take stick up for himself. He’s a big man, big boy," coach Todd McLellan said. "Darnell did his thing and after that, the game took on a life of its own away from that stuff. We were well equipped for anything else (dressing Luke Gazdic too). That may have distracted us early in the game and we took some really dumb penalties and also had a call that was tough to figure out." Nurse has only two goals and nine points this season but those numbers will improve exponentially in the years to come.
Mar 26 - 7:48 AM

Darnell Nurse collected an assist and fought during Thursday's 6-3 win over San Jose.

Nurse fought Michael Haley just 3:11 in to the match, but the defender would go on to play 19:33 over the game. The assist was his seventh, bringing him just one point shy of double-digits.
Mar 25 - 1:46 AM

Darnell Nurse has served his three-game suspension.

Nurse was punished for starting an altercation with San Jose's Roman Polak. While Nurse has been ineligible to play, he's spent his time studying the Oilers' games as well as working out. "You never want to be in that position, but at the same time you have to use your time wisely, learn from it," he said. "Watch and learn and get better in the gym."
Mar 16 - 10:55 AM

Darnell Nurse has been suspended three games for violating Rule 46.2 as the aggressor of an altercation with San Jose's Roman Polak.

The league believes that Nurse was attempting to retaliate over an earlier hit on Matt Hendricks. The Oilers defenseman delivered the first punch before Polak had taken his gloves off. Nurse will be eligible to return on March 16th.
Mar 10 - 12:36 PM

Darnell Nurse has a hearing scheduled for Thursday.

The reasoning for the hearing is under Rule 46.2 (Aggressor) for an altercation with San Jose's Roman Polak on Tuesday night.
Mar 9 - 12:35 PM

Darnell Nurse has been averaging 20:45 minutes per game.

Nurse is the only member of the 2015-16 rookie class to be getting at least 20 minutes per game. "It's sometimes unfair to play Darnell that much because we don't get a chance to protect those guys a lot. He’ll get exposed at times when he's tired or out of position, but that’s the development phase we have him in right now. Is it ideal? No," said Oilers coach Todd McLellan. Edmonton needs him to develop into a top-tier defenseman and he just might manage that.
Feb 23 - 8:59 AM

Darnell Nurse will be scratched from Sunday's match with the Islanders.

Through 44 games this season Nurse has posted eight points, 32 PIMs, 55 blocks, and 95 hits. Not too shabby for the rookie defender.
Feb 7 - 2:10 PM

Darnell Nurse's first career NHL fight was against the Kings' Milan Lucic on Tuesday.

Nurse's first sparring partner certainly wasn't an easy one. "That shows what type of character he is and what type of leadership he has at such a young age, it’s pretty remarkable," said Oilers forward Matt Hendricks. "That’s what Lucic did when he came to the league at that age and Darnell is doing the same thing. I have a lot of respect for Darnell for what he did (Tuesday) night." Nurse is emerging as one of the Oilers' top blueliners this season with an average of 21:04 minutes per game.

Darnell Nurse had an assist in Edmonton's 4-3 overtime win versus San Jose.

Nurse ended a nine-game point drought. He now has a goal and five assists in 20 contests in 2015-16.

Darnell Nurse has played very well on the blueline for the Edmonton Oilers.

Nurse was recalled on October 26 when the Oilers placed Griffin Reinhart on the injured reserve list and Justin Schultz was injured and it was thought that he would go back to the minors once Schultz returned to action but his play has been so good, Nurse has forced the Oilers to keep him. "He’s a big guy who understands the game well," defense partner Andrej Sekera said. "He knows how to skate, shoot, move the puck and be physical. He’s still young but he plays like a man. I think we’ll see a lot more from him." Nurse has a goal and five points in 18 NHL games thus far with a minus-one rating. That's not too bad on the Oilers.
Sat, Dec 5, 2015 07:24:00 AM

Darnell Nurse has one assist in his last five contests.

Nurse has cooled off somewhat from his hot offensive start, leaving him with five points in 12 contests. He has plenty of offensive upside, but like most rookies he's obviously a significant gamble if you're in a single season league.
