Darnell Nurse has been reassigned to AHL Bakersfield.
Nurse has the potential to be a great defenseman, but it is probably in his best interests to hone his game in the minors for now. This will be his first full pro season after recording 10 goals and 33 points in 36 OHL contests in 2014-15. Sep 30 - 5:02 PM

The Edmonton Oilers have divided their training camp roster into two groups, one with those projected to play in the NHL and one with players larger destined to play in the minors, and Darnell Nurse was placed in the latter group.

Nurse might still make the team, but this obviously isn't a great sign. He had 10 goals, 23 assists, and 58 penalty minutes in 36 OHL contests last season. Regardless of whether or not he makes the Oilers' opening game roster, he has tremendous offensive upside and should have some fantasy value within the next few years.

Darnell Nurse believes he's ready to be a regular on Edmonton's blue line.

"I think I have grown a lot since last October," Nurse said at the Oilers' development camp. "I just want to put myself in a good position to make the team. I know what I can achieve over the rest of the summer and that I can come into training camp in good shape and be real confident in what I'll be able to do." Nurse has the potential to become an impact defender on Edmonton's top pairing, but he may need some time before he reaches his ceiling.

Darnell Nurse is hoping to play this season with the Edmonton Oilers.

The highly touted defenseman is no longer eligible to play junior hockey and will begin his first full professional season with either the Oilers or their AHL farm club. He played two games in the NHL last season before Edmonton returned him to Sault Ste. Marie of the OHL. The seventh overall pick in the 2013 Draft, Nurse is the Oilers top prospect on the blueline but with Edmonton signing Andrej Sekera and trading for Griffin Reinhart and Eric Gryba, he may be in tough to crack the lineup out of camp. Stay tuned.
Jul 5 - 5:23 AM

Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli nearly had Dougie Hamilton, but the trade fell through when he declined to include top defensive prospect Darnell Nurse.

Nurse would have been joined by the Oilers' 16th, 33rd and 57th overall picks had Chiarelli thought otherwise. Instead, Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney accepted the Calgary Flames' offer of the 15th, 45th, and 52nd picks. Either way, Boston would've acquired a trio of consecutive picks after trading Milan Lucic to Los Angeles in a package that included the 13th overall pick.
Jun 26 - 5:55 PM

Darnell Nurse has been summoned by AHL Oklahoma City.

That will give Nurse an opportunity to extend his 2014-15 campaign after his Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds were eliminated by Connor McDavid's Erie Otters in the OHL playoffs. Oklahoma City, which is Edmonton's AHL affiliate, is getting ready for the second round of the postseason. Nurse is a top-tier defensive prospect and was taken by Edmonton with the seventh overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
May 5 - 10:20 AM

Darnell Nurse has been out of action for the last few weeks with a leg injury.

Nurse is the Oilers top prospect and suffered the injury while playing for the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL. He was in Edmonton on the weekend to make sure there was nothing wrong with the leg. "I got hit a little awkwardly a couple of weeks back, so the medical staff wanted me to come in to get it looked at. I’ve had a couple of MRIs and everything looks fine. I’m looking forward to heading back to the Soo tomorrow. Nothing serious," Nurse said. "Hopefully I’ll be hopping right back onto the ice." Nurse should crack the weak Oilers blueline next season and be a force for many years to come.
Mar 1 - 7:03 AM

Darnell Nurse has been returned to his junior club in Sault Ste. Marie.

He will play in the OHL after starting the season with Edmonton. He dressed in two games with the Oilers, where he posted two shots, five hits and a minus-2 rating. The 19-year-old defender averaged 16:59 of ice time per contest.

Darnell Nurse played in his first NHL game on Tuesday.

Nurse got a chance to familiarize himself with modern-day Oilers hockey, which is to say that his team got crushed. Edmonton suffered a humbling 6-1 defeat to Los Angeles and Nurse personally finished with a minus-one rating in 18:04 minutes of ice time.

Darnell Nurse will make his NHL debut on Tuesday.

Nurse has the potential to be a great defenseman, especially from a fantasy perspective. However, we recommend tempering your expectations for the 2014-15 campaign. He might not end up getting that much playing time with Edmonton this season and even if he does, it's likely that he'll endure some growing pains along the way.

Darnell Nurse could make his NHL debut as early as Saturday.

Nurse was a healthy scratch on Thursday but coach Dallas Eakins won't want to keep him in the press box too long. Look for Brad Hunt to be a healthy scratch if Nurse gets into the lineup.

Darnell Nurse has made the Edmonton Oilers' opening game roster.

Nurse will get a nine-game trial with Edmonton before they decide whether or not they want to keep him for the full campaign. Nurse has the potential to be a superb fantasy contributor given his blend of physical play and offensive talent.

Darnell Nurse is expected to start the season with the Edmonton Oilers.

According to Bob McKenzie of TSN, Nurse will get a nine-game stint with the big club and the Oilers will then decide if he is ready to spend the entire season in the NHL. The 19-year-old has enormous upside.

Darnell Nurse could start the season with the Edmonton Oilers.

Nurse was considered a bit of a longshot at the start of camp as the Oilers wanted to let him play a lot at the junior level, but an injury to Nikita Nikitin gives Nurse an opportunity for a short trial in the NHL. "I feel like I'm ready to play in this league," Nurse said. "But what I think and what other people might think are two different things. It's up to management." Stay tuned.

Darnell Nurse may be up against it in making the Edmonton Oilers this season.

Nurse was selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2013 Draft and was sent back to junior hockey last season where the defenseman had 50 points and 91 penalty minutes in 64 games. The Oilers have realized that there was a lack of depth on their blueline and as a result, signed Mark Fayne Nikita Nikitin and Keith Aulie in the off-season. These signings will make it tough for Nurse to crack the lineup this season. "If I come in ready and play myself into a spot they're not going to take it away from me," Nurse said. "It's totally up to me to come out and prove myself. I can say anything I want, but if I don't go on the ice and prove it it's all for nothing."
