Jason Dickinson will indeed make his NHL debut on Thursday.

Dickinson was called up because Jason Spezza is battling an illness. He has excelled in his AHL rookie season with 20 goals and 50 points in 69 contests. It's worth noting though that Dickinson's role in Thursday's contest is unclear. "There’s some thought this morning that Dickinson and McKenzie played together and played really well together down there, so there’s some thought to trying to keep them together," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said, referring to Curtis McKenzie, who was also recently summoned from the AHL. "We could keep Dickinson right between Val [Nichushkin] and [Colton] Sceviour where Spezz was at [practice] yesterday."

Jason Dickinson scored a goal in his first NHL preseason game on Monday.

"I just feel way more confident with the years that go by," said the 19-year-old Dallas prospect. "I just gain that much more confidence and that much more knowledge of the game and where I stand with other players." Dickinson, who was drafted 29th overall in 2013, is expected to be returned to the OHL at some point, but for now he's still with the Stars for an extended learning experience.

The Stars have high hopes for Jason Dickinson, their 29th-overall pick in the 2013 draft.

Even though he's not NHL-ready and will need two more years in junior, there's a lot to like about his game. "He has a great skill base, size, skating, good hands…just talent, really,’’ Stars assistant general manager Les Jackson said. "But what I love is his attitude. He wants to learn, he wants to understand the game, he wants to compete. He’s one of those players where the bigger the game, the better he plays.’’

The Dallas Stars grabbed Jason Dickinson with the 29th pick of the 2013 draft.

Dallas acquired this selection from Boston as part of the Jaromir Jagr trade. Dickinson has seen his stock drop over the past few months in part due to his relatively poor second half of the season. However, he has huge potential and is only scratching the surface of his offensive skill set. He improved his production in 2012-2013, registering 47 points, but scouts point to his plus-19 rating after finishing a minus-15 in his rookie year as the greatest indication of his progression. He has very quick hands and uses his creativity to set up teammates for scoring chances. Some scouts are concerned with Dickinson’s consistency issues and his lack of compete level, as he seems to take shifts off at times. If he can gain some strength and become more reliable on a nightly basis, he has a real chance to become a very good offensive player in the NHL.

Jason Dickinson scored a hat trick in Guelph's 8-0 domination of Mississauga on Wednesday afternoon.

The sophomore OHLer has 12 goals and 11 assists in 25 games this season after he put up 35 points in 63 appearances last year. Dickinson is projected to be a first-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and he owned the 14h overall position in International Scouting Services' November rankings.
