Andreas Athanasiou's agent, Darren Ferris, feels negotiations with the Red Wings are going well.

"I can say that we are having productive discussions at this point that are a positive indication of the mutual desire to come to an agreement," said Ferris. "I'm not saying we are anywhere near a decision or a deal but it's positive." He also stated that heading overseas to play in the KHL and then the Olympics is still an option.

Coach Jeff Blashill had nothing new to report on the matter. Athanasiou is deciding between the NHL and the KHL. He is reportedly working on a one- or two-year contract with Detroit.

Andreas Athanasiou is engaging in contract talks with KHL teams.

Athanasiou is a restricted free agent after completing his entry-level contract with Detroit. At one time it seemed unlikely that he would end up shifting to the KHL, but it now sounds like a distinct possibility. He had 18 goals and 29 points in 64 contests with Detroit in his first full NHL campaign. As an aside, if he did opt to play in the KHL then he might end up representing Team Canada in the Olympics.
Sep 5 - 5:53 PM

The offers Andreas Athanasiou has received from the KHL are much better than the ones he's received from the Detroit Red Wings, according to his agent Darren Ferris.

"Andreas is evaluating the pros and cons of all the offers," Ferris said. "Andreas loves Detroit and especially the Detroit fans but he has to really consider the serious offers from the KHL he has before him. There is a considerable difference in the amount of money." It's still unlikely that the young winger goes to Russia to play in the KHL, but if the Red Wings' offer is really that low, anything is possible.

Restricted free agent Andreas Athanasiou has reportedly received an offer from a KHL club.

The report comes from Sports Express' Igor Eronko, who also added that Athanasiou is highly unlikely to accept the KHL offer. The negotiations haven't gone well between Athanasiou and the Red Wings, and this is Athanasiou's way of putting a little more pressure on the organization. This could realistically drag on into training camp if neither side is willing to budge.
Aug 25 - 11:01 AM

Restricted free agent Andreas Athanasiou could reportedly opt to sign in the KHL, according to Rick Dhaliwal of NEWS 1130 Sports.

Dhaliwal added that "talks with Red Wings [are] going nowhere" right now. Athanasiou still hasn't signed a new contract with the Red Wings, which means it's possible he continues his career in Russia, but this sounds like a tactic to put some heat on Detroit. The 23-year-old had 18 goals and 29 points in 64 games with the Wings last season. It would be surprising to see him bolt overseas.
Aug 23 - 8:52 AM

Contract talks between Detroit and RFA Andreas Athanasiou are ongoing.

"I made a number of offers; we continue to talk," GM Ken Holland said. "We've had a number of conversations." Holland declined to go into details, but there's speculation that Athanasiou may get a two-year bridge deal to prove himself.

Andreas Athanasiou wants to be "as dominant as possible" in 2017-18.

"You learn so much playing in this league," Athanasiou said. "I just try to do the best I can and play within my game and not try to do too much. Coming into next season, I'm going to keep a mind-set of wanting to get better. Speed is part of my game. When I get those opportunities, I know I can either get a good scoring chance or change the momentum. It definitely can swing momentum." He finished second on the team with 18 goals this past season and will likely be a key offensive player for the Red Wings next year.
