Andreas Athanasiou scored a pair of goals and an assist in Wednesday's 8-2 win over the Calgary Flames.
Athanasiou's goals gave the Red Wings 1-0 and 7-2 leads in the first and third periods. He also helped set up Anthony Mantha's tally in the first frame. Athanasiou now has four goals and two assists in nine games this season. Four of those six points have come in the last two games. He's only worth adding in deeper fantasy formats. Nov 15 - 11:21 PM

Andreas Athanasiou has been seeing time at center during Detroit's road trip.

Coach Jeff Blashill switched up his combinations to try to avoid unfavorable matchups when the opposing team has the last change. Athanasiou has played in the middle before and feels he is building some chemistry with Martin Frk. Blashill said he may reunite Athanasiou (on the wing) with Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha for home games.
Nov 9 - 10:05 AM

Andreas Athanasiou found the back of the net in Detroit's 3-2 shootout win over Florida on Saturday.

It was Athanasiou's first goal of the season. He only made his season debut on Thursday because he was a contract holdout. He was limited to 11:38 minutes on Thursday, but his playing time was bumped up to 15:14 on Saturday, which is probably a better indication of the type of role he'll receive going forward.
Oct 29 - 5:33 AM

Andreas Athanasiou will make his season debut on Thursday.

Athanasiou is drawing into the lineup quicker than we would have expected. He hasn't played yet this season because he was a roster holdout, but he trained in Toronto and Europe while waiting to sign and apparently those efforts paid off. His projected linemates for Thursday's game are Frans Nielsen and Darren Helm.
Oct 26 - 12:56 PM

Andreas Athanasiou's status for Thursday night will be determined after the morning skate.

Athanasiou got back on the ice Wednesday morning with his Red Wings teammates after ending his contract holdout. "He looked good, he's a good skater and he trained hard in Europe and skated in Toronto (Athanasiou's home)," coach Jeff Blashill said. "We have to see how he feels (at Thursday's morning skate). We need a jolt, too. We're hoping he can give us a jolt." He skated alongside Frans Nielsen and Darren Helm during the session.
Oct 26 - 9:36 AM

Andreas Athanasiou might make his season debut on Thursday.

That's sooner than we would have expected. Athanasiou missed training camp and Detroit's first nine games as a contract holdout, so it was thought that he would need more time to get into game shape. If he does play on Thursday, his ice time might be somewhat limited.
Oct 25 - 4:23 PM

Andreas Athanasiou will join the Red Wings on their current road trip.

Athanasiou's work visa has been approved. It's still unclear when he will be available to play, but it's good that one obstacle has already been settled.
Oct 24 - 6:43 PM

Although the Detroit Red Wings and Andreas Athanasiou have agreed to terms, it could be weeks before he makes his season debut.

Athanasiou needs to get a work visa and the process for that will begin on Monday. Beyond that though, it might be week or two before he's ready to pass a team physical. The Red Wings have cleared the cap space necessary to accommodate his $1.387 million contract though by dealing Riley Sheahan to Pittsburgh, so that's one road block out of the way.
Oct 22 - 10:56 AM

Updating a previously report, Andreas Athanasiou's one-year contract with Detroit will be worth $1.387 million.

That's slightly more than the $1.35 million that was previously reported. Athanasiou and Detroit might have agreed to terms, but nothing can officially happen yet because the Red Wings don't have a roster spot or cap space available for him. They'll presumably find a way to make room for him but how they'll go about doing that and how long it will take remains to be seen.
Oct 20 - 5:45 PM

Andreas Athanasiou will reportedly sign a contract worth $1.35 million for the 2017-18 campaign.

Athanasiou is a restricted free agent and consequently hasn't played this season. The two sides are reportedly close, but the Red Wings need to determine what course of action they want to take in regards to a necessarily corresponding roster move.
Oct 20 - 4:51 PM

Andreas Athanasiou and the Detroit Red Wings are reportedly closing in on a contract.

Athanasiou missed training camp and the first seven games of the Red Wings' schedule as a contract holdout. Even if he were to sign on Friday, we would still expect him to miss some additional time while he gets back into game shape. It's also possible that he would be sent to the minors on a conditioning stint. The two sides are reportedly most likely to agree to a one-year contract.
Oct 20 - 1:03 PM

Andreas Athanasiou is still in Switzerland, according to agent Darren Ferris.

Athanasiou, who remains an unsigned restricted free agent, has been skating in Switzerland for more than 10 days. He has no leverage in negotiations and the Red Wings have not budged on their offers during the summer, which are a one-year deal at $1.25 million and two years at $1.9 million per season. Detroit doesn't want to move Athanasiou either, but if he is traded then it won't be for anything less than a blue-chip prospect or a high draft pick.
Oct 19 - 8:53 AM

The Detroit Red Wings have confirmed that Andreas Athanasiou is heading to Switzerland.

Athanasiou, who is a restricted free agent, informed Red Wings GM Ken Holland of his decision. He's expected to skate with HC Lugano, but he hasn't signed with the squad. This could be a tactic to try to put pressure on Detroit, but either way it's probably a good thing that he's at least going to start working out with a team. As it is, he missed all of training camp so even if Detroit did sign him now he would probably need time to get back into game shape.
Oct 7 - 4:35 AM

Andreas Athanasiou is heading to Switzerland to skate with HC Lugano.

Athanasiou is a restricted free agent as he still hasn't agreed to terms with Detroit. It remains to be seen if he'll ultimately sign with Lugano. The 23-year-old had 18 goals and 29 points in 64 contests with Detroit in 2016-17.
