Andreas Athanasiou and Xavier Ouellet will both watch Saturday's match against San Jose from the press box.

Athanasiou has no points in three games this season while averaging just 11:25 per night. While Ouellet has a point in four games and seeing a few more minutes per, both are off to disappointing starts to say the least. However should either get hot, don't be surprised if they're permanent additions to the lineup.

Oct 21 - 6:34 PM

Andreas Athanasiou will play on Detroit's top line with Henrik Zetterberg and Frans Nielsen on Saturday night.

Athanasiou was a healthy scratch in Detroit's 6-4 loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday, but he'll get a golden opportunity to prove his worth against the Panthers tonight. "We just want to keep, without totally changing things, we want to keep tinkering and trying to just find the best combinations," coach Jeff Blashill said. "We think we’ve got good depth up front. Let’s tinker as we need to tinker to get the most out of every line." The 22-year-old had nine goals and 14 points in 37 NHL games last season.
Oct 15 - 9:03 AM

Andreas Athanasiou and Ryan Sproul will be scratched for Thursday's opener against Tampa Bay.

Athanasiou posted 14 points in 37 games during his first lap around the League last season, and big things are expected. Which is why it's so curious that the 22-year-old isn't playing tonight. Be that as it may, if he has a quality first month then feel free to hop aboard his train.

Andreas Athanasiou edged out Anthony Mantha for a roster spot thanks to his efforts from last season.

"That put him in a spot, coming into camp, where he was more established as a player," coach Jeff Blashill said. "I thought they had almost even camps. When I said going into camp, 'You've got to make us better, you've got to knock other guys out of the box' -- in the end, I thought they played the same. So the edge goes to AA." Athansiou contributed nine goals and 14 points in 37 matches with the Red Wings last season.

Oct 3 - 12:02 AM

Andreas Athanasiou is confident that he will stick with the Red Wings at the beginning of the 2016-17 season.

"I'm not worried about that," Athanasiou said regarding a possible demotion to the minors. "I'm confident in my abilities. I do what I can out there and like I said, it's their decision and I'm doing to do the best I can to make it as easy as possible. Just take it day to day. Come September I'm going to be ready to play. It's in their hands what they want to do. I'll try to make their decision as easy as possible." He will be competing with Anthony Mantha and Tomas Nosek, who can also be sent down without clearing waivers first.

Look for Andreas Athanasiou to have a bigger role with the Red Wings next season.

The 21-year-old speedster certainly impressed the Detroit coaching staff with his stint in the NHL this season and with his play in the playoffs. Athanasiou has seemingly passed prospects Tomas Jurco and Teemu Pulkkinen on the Wings' depth chart and could eventually settle into a second-line role with a number of expected departures. Keep an eye on Athanasiou.
Apr 23 - 8:06 AM

Andreas Athanasiou scored the game-winning goal in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The win allows the Red Wings to cut the Lightning's series lead to 2-1. Athanasiou nearly opened the scoring earlier in the game when he pulled off two spin-o-ramas in front of Lightning goalie Ben Bishop. The Wings rookie redeemed himself in the middle of the second period when he got the Wings on the board with his first career playoff goal. Tomas Tatar and Joakim Andersson picked up the assists on the goal. Henrik Zetterberg scored the insurance marker for Detroit.
Apr 17 - 10:18 PM

Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill has been limiting Andreas Athanasiou's minutes this season.

"I get asked," Blashill said of Athanasiou's ice-time. "Obviously this seems to be a hot topic. Double-A is a good player who’s growing. Double-A will prove whether or not he can be an elite player, but when he left the American League he was not an elite player. So, to think that he’s all of a sudden going to come here and be an elite player is, I think, asking a lot of him." The 21-year-old averaged just over nine minutes of ice-time in the regular season and 8:09 in two playoff games.
Apr 17 - 10:54 AM

Andreas Athanasiou scored for a second straight game on Thursday night.

He scored an important goal in Wednesday's win over Philadelphia, but his late goal on Thursday in a 5-2 loss to Boston was much less significant. Athanasiou has nine goals and five assists for 14 points in 36 games this season.
Apr 8 - 8:18 AM

Andreas Athanasiou scored in Detroit's 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night.

He registered a shorthanded goal in the contest to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead after two periods. The 21-year-old speedster has eight goals and 13 points in 35 games with Detroit.
Apr 7 - 7:43 AM

Don't expect Andreas Athanasiou to play alongside Pavel Datsyuk Saturday afternoon against the Rangers.

Athanasiou lined up as a winger on Datsyuk's unit to start the game against the Jets on Thursday but finished playing sparingly on Detroit's other lines. Red Wing coach Jeff Blashill thought Athanasiou didn't execute as well as he should have. For now take a wait and see approach with Athanasiou as he is experiencing the typical rookie growing pains.
