Andreas Athanasiou scored a pair of goals in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Washington Capitals.

Both of Athanasiou's goals came in the first period, and they were scored less than three minutes apart. His first marker tied the game at one, while his second gave the Wings their only lead of the game. Athanasiou has 13 goals and five assists in 39 games this season. Henrik Zetterberg also scored for Detroit.

Andreas Athanasiou extended his goal streak to three games in Tuesday's 4-3 OT loss to the Blackhawks.

The Wings found themselves down 2-0 in the second period when Athanasiou found the back of the net. The Wings then tied the game twice in regulation before falling in the extra frame. Not only has Athanasiou scored in three straight, he's also picked up an impressive six points during that span. The 22-year-old has right goals and 13 points in 26 games. Tomas Tatar and Luke Glendening also scored for the Red Wings.

Andreas Athanasiou's two-point output wasn't enough for the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday as they fell 6-3 to the San Jose Sharks.

He scored a goal and an assist with a +2 rating on four SOG. This makes for a hot streak, as he scored a goal and two assists in his last game. He isn't getting a ton of ice time (less than 15 minutes TOI in these past two games), but he's making the most of his reps.

It was his first goal in seven games and he nearly had two, missing a chance late in the game. He has six to go with four assists for 10 points in 24 games. Thomas Vanek scored twice and Anthony Mantha scored the other goal.

Andreas Athanasiou was benched in Thursday's 3-2 OT win against Ottawa.

He did not see the ice in the third period. Red Wings bench boss Jeff Blashill said afterward that it was a "coach's decision" and didn't elaborate further. Anthanasiou had a minus-2 rating and two shots in 5:13 of playing time.

Athanasiou tied the game at one with his goal at the 16:12 mark of the opening period. Unfortunately for Detroit, they gave up three unanswered goals the rest of the way. This was Athanasiou's first goal since coming back from a knee injury that cost him 12 games between Nov. 12 and Dec. 6. He has five goals and one assist in 16 games.

That could mean that he is projected for fourth-line duty, so Drew Miller or Steve Ott could be scratched against Columbus. Athanasiou has been absent for the last four weeks because of a sprained knee.

If he can do that then a return during Detroit's upcoming homestand is a possibility. Athanasiou has been sidelined since Nov. 10 because of a sprained knee.

That's tough news for the team and the youngster, who had picked up two of his four goals over the last five games. Through 13 games he has five points. He is considered week-to-week.

Andreas Athanasiou (knee) has been doing some skating recently with strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar.

"It's getting better every day," said Athanasiou, who has been skating for the last five days. "Starting to feel really good. Just trying to improve something every day with mobility. But it feels strong and it feels like it's getting back up to par." He is encouraged by his progress, but he doesn't want to come back too early like he did last year when he had the same injury.
