For the second consecutive game, Detroit's Andreas Athanasiou scored an overtime goal.

The Red Wings' forward notched his 18th goal of the season Monday night to give Detroit a 4-3 victory over the Hurricanes in Carolina. Athanasiou got the game-winning goal Sunday in the Wings' 3-2 OT win against the Minnesota Wild. Athanasiou also picked up an assist Monday on the second of Anthony Mantha's two goals. Mantha netted back-to-back goals in the second period, giving him 18 on the season. Tomas Tatar also scored for the Wings, his 23rd. Gustav Nyquist picked up two assists, his 31st and 32nd.

Two more unanswered Avalanche goals came in the third. This was only Athanasiou’s second goal and fourth point in his last 12 games.

Not only has Athanasiou scored in three straight, he's also picked up an impressive six points during that span. The 22-year-old has right goals and 13 points in 26 games. Tomas Tatar and Luke Glendening also scored for the Red Wings.

He did not see the ice in the third period. Red Wings bench boss Jeff Blashill said afterward that it was a "coach's decision" and didn't elaborate further. Anthanasiou had a minus-2 rating and two shots in 5:13 of playing time.

Athanasiou tied the game at one with his goal at the 16:12 mark of the opening period. Unfortunately for Detroit, they gave up three unanswered goals the rest of the way. This was Athanasiou's first goal since coming back from a knee injury that cost him 12 games between Nov. 12 and Dec. 6. He has five goals and one assist in 16 games.

Andreas Athanasiou is slated to be eased back into the lineup on Friday in his return from a knee injury.

That could mean that he is projected for fourth-line duty, so Drew Miller or Steve Ott could be scratched against Columbus. Athanasiou has been absent for the last four weeks because of a sprained knee.
