Andreas Athanasiou scored the only goal in Detroit's 1-0 win over Washington on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old made his NHL debut in Sunday's game against Dallas. He picked up his first career goal in just his second game. Athanasiou was Detroit's fourth round pick, 110th overall, in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He finished the game with three shots on goal and a plus-1 rating in just under nine minutes of action. Don't expect him to put up a ton of points this year.

Andreas Athanasiou made his NHL debut Sunday against Dallas.

He registered two hits, one block and won four of his eight faceoffs in 9:36 of ice time. "We felt we needed speed down in the bottom six (forwards) and he could really help," coach Jeff Blashill said. "AA doesn't need a top-six role to score because he has such a lethal weapon with his speed."

The Red Wings have recalled forward Andreas Athanasiou as defender Kyle Quincey was placed on short-term I/R.

Through 65 games for AHL Grand Rapids, Athanasiou has posted 18 goals and 37 points. Which doesn't inspire one to pick up the 21-year-old forward.

Andreas Athanasiou increased his chances of sticking with the Detroit Red Wings Wednesday night by scoring two goals and adding an assist in his team's 7-2 preseason slaughter of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Anthony Mantha also made a good impression with a late goal and two assists for the winners. Dylan Larkin, Brendan Smith, Riley Shean and Justin Abdelkader recorded the other Detroit goals. Scoring for Pittsburgh were Daniel Sprong and Beau Bennett, both on power plays. The Penguins were playing their third game in as many nights. Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek made 36 saves. Jeff Zatkoff had 15 saves for the Penguins.

Although Andreas Athanasiou had a solid season in the minors, a broken jaw followed by a bad case of the flu caused him to finish 20 pounds lighter than when he started the season.

Athanasiou's goal is to regain his lost weight over the summer, which would mean going into the 2015-16 campaign at 195 pounds. He had 16 goals and 32 points in 55 AHL contests last season.
