Andreas Athanasiou (knee) has been doing some skating recently with strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar.

"It's getting better every day," said Athanasiou, who has been skating for the last five days. "Starting to feel really good. Just trying to improve something every day with mobility. But it feels strong and it feels like it's getting back up to par." He is encouraged by his progress, but he doesn't want to come back too early like he did last year when he had the same injury.

Andreas Athanasiou (knee) will be sidelined for at least two more weeks.

He sustained a sprained knee last Thursday against Vancouver.
Nov 16 - 4:55 PM

Andreas Athanasiou is dealing with a knee sprain.

Athanasiou is expected to miss a week or two as a result. He's been moved to the injured reserve list and that's allowed Detroit to summon Anthony Mantha.

Andreas Athanasiou scored a goal in Tuesday's 3-2 shootout win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Athanasiou also scored the winner in the shootout. His goal at the 11:11 mark of the third period tied the game at two. The 22-year-old has four goals and one assist in 12 games this season. Two of his four goals have come against the Flyers this season.
Nov 8 - 10:45 PM

Andreas Athanasiou scored in Wednesday's 4-3 OT loss to Philadelphia.

He gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead in the first period just 16 seconds after Dylan Larkin opened the scoring, but the Flyers battled back. Athanasiou has three goals and one assist in nine games this year.
Nov 3 - 9:56 AM

Andreas Anthanasiou was a late addition to the lineup on Thursday against the Blues as Thomas Vanek was sidelined with a groin/hip-flexor injury.

This could be Athanasiou's big chance to secure some ice time as the veteran heals up. Keep an eye out.
Oct 27 - 8:21 PM

Andreas Athanasiou and Xavier Ouellet will both watch Thursday's match against Detroit from the press box.

Athanasiou has two goals and three points in five games this season, but is averaging just under 11 minutes per night. Which does not suggest that coach Jeff Blashill has much trust in the youngster, yet. Ouellet has averaged just under 15 minutes per night over four games with a helper, so it seems both are in similar boats with the bench boss. Stay patient.

Andreas Athanasiou notched a goal and an assist Tuesday night in a 4-2 win against Carolina.

He has found the back of the net in two straight contests after going scoreless in each of his first three games of the season. Athanasiou contributed 14 points in 37 matches with Detroit last year.
Oct 26 - 7:57 AM

In a late lineup change, Andreas Athanasiou will tag in for Justin Abedelkader (LBI) against San Jose on Saturday night.

Here's another glorious opportunity for the youngster to make his mark on the team. Athanasiou has no points in three games so far this season.
Oct 22 - 6:51 PM

Andreas Athanasiou and Xavier Ouellet will both watch Saturday's match against San Jose from the press box.

Athanasiou has no points in three games this season while averaging just 11:25 per night. While Ouellet has a point in four games and seeing a few more minutes per, both are off to disappointing starts to say the least. However should either get hot, don't be surprised if they're permanent additions to the lineup.

Andreas Athanasiou will be a healthy scratch for the Red Wings against Nashville in Detroit tonight.

Ed Ott will replace Athanasiou. Also sitting out tonight as a healthy scratch for Detroit will be Xavier Ouellet.
Oct 21 - 6:34 PM

Andreas Athanasiou will play on Detroit's top line with Henrik Zetterberg and Frans Nielsen on Saturday night.

Athanasiou was a healthy scratch in Detroit's 6-4 loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday, but he'll get a golden opportunity to prove his worth against the Panthers tonight. "We just want to keep, without totally changing things, we want to keep tinkering and trying to just find the best combinations," coach Jeff Blashill said. "We think we’ve got good depth up front. Let’s tinker as we need to tinker to get the most out of every line." The 22-year-old had nine goals and 14 points in 37 NHL games last season.
Oct 15 - 9:03 AM

Andreas Athanasiou and Ryan Sproul will be scratched for Thursday's opener against Tampa Bay.

Athanasiou posted 14 points in 37 games during his first lap around the League last season, and big things are expected. Which is why it's so curious that the 22-year-old isn't playing tonight. Be that as it may, if he has a quality first month then feel free to hop aboard his train.

Oct 13 - 6:52 PM

Andreas Athanasiou edged out Anthony Mantha for a roster spot thanks to his efforts from last season.

"That put him in a spot, coming into camp, where he was more established as a player," coach Jeff Blashill said. "I thought they had almost even camps. When I said going into camp, 'You've got to make us better, you've got to knock other guys out of the box' -- in the end, I thought they played the same. So the edge goes to AA." Athansiou contributed nine goals and 14 points in 37 matches with the Red Wings last season.
