It's OK for me to just keep practicing, keep working hard and keep my head up. For sure it's hard to do because I want to play hockey. I want to play every game here. I want to help these guys." He has one goal and a minus-3 rating in his six games.

Nikita Zadorov will be a healthy scratch Thursday night.

"He needs to be better," coach Ron Rolston said. "A lot of aspects, just a lot of his details right now, practice and game situations. He needs to get some perspective, you know? With all our players, especially our young guys, we don't want guys getting comfortable." The rookie blueliner has one goal, 17 hits and a minus-2 rating in five games with the Sabres. Buffalo may keep him for a nine-game tryout before returning him to his OHL team in London.

Zadorov suffered a "smashed" finger tip on his left hand during training camp, but stayed up with the team. Buffalo wants to give him some NHL action and then it's expected that he'll be returned to the junior ranks.

He was asked if Zadorov's NHL debut was imminent and he said, "could be tonight" after stating that the Sabres could "possibly" be using seven defensemen against the Colorado Avalanche. Buffalo would need to make a roster move prior to the game, so that Zadorov can be taken off their injured non-roster list.

Nikita Zadorov will not play Saturday night against Colorado but Wednesday against Boston is a possibility.

Zadorov injured his hand in the pre-season and has not yet played a game with the Sabres. it looks as if Buffalo coach Ron Rolston wants to give him a chance to dress for at least one NHL contest before returning him to his junior team, the London Knights. Zadorov remains a highly-thought of defence prospect. If you can stash him on reserve, do so.

The Buffalo Sabres have taken Nikita Zadorov with the 16th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Nikita Zadorov is near the top of this year’s class in the big, powerful and physical defenseman category. The OHL rookie played a pivotal role in London’s title run, improving immensely as the season went on. Zadorov’s speed, balance, crisp pivots and impressive edgework make him an excellent skater who can fill big gaps with his long reach. The Russian plays an intimidating brand of hockey, makes bone-rattling hits and drops his gloves when challenged to fisticuffs. Zadorov’s offensive skills are still raw and he lacks poise with the puck making him prone to turnovers and bad passes. His defensive shutdown capabilities can translate well into the NHL as soon as next season, but a little seasoning in the juniors will improve his offense and polish. Between Rasmus Ristolainen and Zadorov, the future of the Sabres defense is looking very bright.
