Jake McCabe (upper body) will likely play in Thursday's preseason game versus Minnesota.
The Sabres have just six healthy defensemen at training camp. McCabe returned to practice on Wednesday after being sidelined with an upper-body injury. He has a chance to start the season in the NHL because injuries could keep Zach Bogosian and/or Josh Gorges out for the opener. Oct 1 - 9:58 AM

Jake McCabe didn't practice Monday due to an upper-body injury.

He is still being evaluated to get a better understanding of his status. "We're kinda waiting to see where he's at with that," coach Dan Bylsma said. "It happened very late in the game in Ottawa. He was better yesterday and better today. Some good news we just don't know quite yet on him." McCabe is trying to earn a spot with the Sabres to start the season and his odds got better if he can return soon. Zach Bogosian and Josh Gorges may not be ready for the season opener because of lower-body injuries.

Jake McCabe is looking to make an impression on Buffalo's new coaching staff this year.

The 21-year-old has played in nine games with the Sabres in the last two years and has one assist during that span. "I can't say exactly where I'll fit in, but I'm hoping to play my best hockey I've played and show the coaching staff that I am ready to play at that next level," McCabe said. "I've obviously played a few games at that level, and I think I fit in and can play at that NHL level and play against the top players in the world. I'm hoping to prove that in camp."

Jake McCabe suffered what is believed to be a concussion during an AHL game against Utica on Wednesday.

Rochester is looking for a suspension on Darren Archibald for the hit. "He went down hard – compounded with the fact he hit the ice," Amerks coach Chadd Cassidy said. "It's pretty serious. ... There was head contact for sure on an unsuspecting player." McCabe's injury could make him unavailable to be called up for the remainder of the season.

Jake McCabe has been returned to the minors by Buffalo.

He appeared in two games with the Sabres during his NHL stint, including Tuesday's match against Columbus. McCabe will play for Rochester on Wednesday, but could be back up with Buffalo if Tyson Strachan isn't able to return from an infection on Thursday.

Jake McCabe scored Buffalo’s only goal in their 5-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.

The goal was McCabe’s first of the preseason and was scored on the power play. We don’t usually read much into the preseason, but the Sabres appear to be in for a long season. Buffalo should give their young players plenty of opportunity this year. The 20-year-old isn’t a slam dunk to make the team out of camp, but even if he is sent to the minors, a mid-season call-up isn’t out of the question. Mikhail Grigorenko and Drew Stafford picked up the assists on McCabe’s goal.

Jake McCabe has been very good at training camp as he attempts to land a job with the Buffalo Sabres.

He is the hunt for spots with Rasmus Ristolainen, Andre Benoit, Nikita Zadorov and an injured Mark Pysyk. "Competition makes you better," McCabe said. "It brings the best out of you. Every day you're getting evaluated, whether it be on the ice, off the ice, practice, games. I'm not trying to be someone I'm not, and hopefully the rest will take care of itself. Obviously, I want to stay in Buffalo really bad, but it's my first year pro. I'm adjusting. I'm going to focus on getting better every day and getting used to these systems." McCabe was paired with Tyler Myers in this past Friday's preseason match against Toronto.
