Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault expects sophomore forward Jimmy Vesey to take the next step this season.
"For me, he’s a gamer. He’s a guy that wants to prove that he can contribute and help a team win," Vigneault said. "And he’s shown leadership qualities in the past and I expect him to be even better this year." The 24-year-old had 16 goals and 11 assists in 80 games during his rookie season. Expect him to improve his offensive output this season, but he likely won't have any fantasy value. Sep 18 - 7:53 AM

Jimmy Vesey scored a goal and an assist in Saturday's 5-4 OT loss to Ottawa Senators in Game 5.

The Rangers squandered a couple of leads in this game, as they were up 2-0 in the first period and Vesey's goal put them up 4-3 in the third period (he also picked up the only assist on Nick Holden's first-period goal to put the Rangers up by two). It was his first career playoff goal. Former Rangers Derick Brassard tied the game at four with less than 1:30 remaining in regulation to force overtime. In the extra frame, Kyle Turris gave the Sens the win and the lead in the series. Vesey now has five points in 11 games this postseason. The Rangers are now on the brink of elimination, as they trail the best-of-seven series 3-2. Game 6 will be played at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
May 6 - 6:39 PM

Jimmy Vesey has contributed two assists in seven playoff games.

The 23-year-old rookie had 16 goals and 27 points in 80 games during the 2016-17 campaign. "We want more quality shots and get that second and third whack and get more bodies to the net. Once we get the first goal, we've got to find a way to get a second. We've got a find a way to get a little hungrier," said Vesey. ". . . The last series [against Montreal] was more up and down. This series might have to be more possess the puck in their end and generate chances from there." He has been credited with 10 shots so far in the postseason.

Jimmy Vesey will return to action on Sunday against the Flyers.

After sitting out his first game as a healthy scratch, he'll look to build on the 15 goals and 26 points he's scored through 76 games this season.
Apr 2 - 1:41 PM

Jimmy Vesey will indeed be scratched against the Penguins on Friday.

The rookie winger has posted 15 goals and 26 points along with 60 hits and a 13.6 shooting percentage through the first 76 games of his career.
Mar 31 - 6:06 PM

Jimmy Vesey is projected to be a healthy scratch on Friday.

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault wasn't happy with Vesey's performance on Tuesday. "The thing with Jimmy is that he had been playing some really solid hockey, great energy, was hard on the forecheck. For whatever reason, in San Jose, he had an off night. That’s being very polite, it was a real off night," Vigneault said. "It’s not a big deal. But I’ve got some options right now and I’m looking at those options." Vigneault did add on Thursday that Vesey will still be in the lineup during the playoffs even if he doesn't play on Friday, so this sounds like at most a short-term benching.

Jimmy Vesey scored for the first time in 15 games Saturday.

"I thought we had a good game together," Vesey said. "Obviously it feels good to score, but I think except for the last game [Friday against Florida at the Garden] I’ve been skating well. "I have a different role on this line, but I’m just trying my best to learn and do what I can to help us win." Vesey has 15 goals and 25 points this season but expect more next season.

Jimmy Vesey picked up his 24th point of the season as the Rangers fell 5-2 to the Blue Jackets on Sunday.

It was a beauty of a no-look cross-ice pass to Rick Nash, who did the rest. Vesey has recorded 10 assists on the year through 61 games. All things considered, not too shabby for a rookie.
Feb 26 - 8:48 PM

Jimmy Vesey recorded an assist in a 3-2 shootout loss to Montreal on Tuesday.

Vesey has registered a point in three of his last four games. That gives the Rangers rookie 14 goals and 23 points in 58 contests this season.
Feb 22 - 5:07 AM

Jimmy Vesey scored a power play goal in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Islanders.

Vesey's now found the back of the net in consecutive games for the first time since Oct. 30-Nov. 1. His marker in the third period cut the Islanders' lead to 3-2, but that's as close as the Rangers would come to tying it up. Vesey has scored 14 goals and eight assists in 2016-17.
Feb 16 - 10:21 PM

Jimmy Vesey's 13th goal of the season was the game winner as the New York Rangers defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2.

Vesey was considered a candidate for the Calder Trophy at the start of the season and performed like one through the first ten games of the season as he had six goals. But he only had six more in the next 44 games before the game winner on Monday. He has 21 points this season and while he has struggled since early in the season, the Rangers are still high on the rookie.
Feb 13 - 10:37 PM

The New York Rangers have Jimmy Vesey seeing the strength and conditioning coach before and after every game.

This has been going on for a couple of months as Vesey tries to get used to the long NHL schedule of 82 games with the travel, rather than the 30 games a college player has with limited travel. "It’s just that this is different than playing 30 games," Vesey said to the New York Post. "Here we work out after games. In college, it was like, go do schoolwork, or my family or everyone’s family was at games. And we only played twice a week. So I’m still in the process of becoming a pro." Vesey had six goals in his first 10 games as he seemed poised to contend for the Calder Trophy but he has only six goals since in 44 games including only one in his last 16.

Jimmy Stepan played on Thursday with Rick Nash and Derek Stepan.

Vesey moved up the depth chart with the line switch and impressed coach Alain Vigneault. "I thought they had a good game," Vigneault said. "I thought they had some powerful shifts last game. Jimmy was very useful to that line. Nasher took pucks to the net and easily could’ve had two or three goals in that game. I thought that whole line played a good game, played at both ends of the think and I expect that of them." Vesey has 12 goals and 20 points this season but the rookie is a minus-seven.

Feb 5 - 9:01 AM

It's been a tale of two streaks for rookie Jimmy Vesey through the first four months of his career.

Over the first 24 games of his career in October and November, Vesey posted an impressive eight goals and 14 points. But that's about where statistical praise ends for him. Over his last 24 games played in December and January, the rookie has three goals and five points which includes no points over his last 10 games. The 23-year-old is certainly talented enough to turn things around but we'd wait for a good week before turning to him for supplementary support.
Jan 29 - 3:10 PM

With half a season left, Jimmy Vesey's endurance is being put to the test.

Like many rookies, Vesey is dealing with a tougher schedule than he's faced in the past. He participated in 33 games with Harvard University last season, but he's already appeared in 41 contests with the Rangers in 2016-17 - 49 games if you want to include the preseason action. That steep increase isn't lost on him. "Yeah, I’ve thought about it, I’m just trying to put that one off," Vesey said. "You think about rookie camp and preseason, I’ve played almost 50 games. So I’m on pace for 100. I’ve thought about it, just trying to take it day by day." The 23-year-old forward has 11 goals and 19 points this season.
