Calgary Flames President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke says college free agents rarely make a big impact in the NHL, but he admits Jimmy Vesey could be different.
"If you look at the college free agents, they have made a dramatically insignificant contribution to our league," said Burke. "Tyler Bozak might be the best one. Of the 100 or 150 that have signed, most have very little impact. I think this player (Vesey) is going to play and make a difference. I think he’s going to be a good player. But if you look at that group and the money the league has spent on those players and their contribution, it is a pimple on an elephant’s butt." It seemed like every team had an interest in Vesey when he became available. The 23-year-old ended up signing with the New York Rangers on Friday. Aug 21 - 9:41 AM

Jimmy Vesey signed with the Rangers because he believes they were the best fit for him.

Vesey's short list consisted of eight teams and in the end, the Rangers won out. "The thing that jumped out for me is that they seemed to really want me and it seemed that they really needed to have me in their lineup," Vesey said during a conference call. "That was something I was looking for, and based on my talks (with the Rangers' coaching staff and front office), I felt that New York was the right fit." The 23-year-old will likely make the jump to the NHL in his first year of pro hockey.

The New York Rangers signed Jimmy Vesey to a two-year, entry-level contract.

He will earn a base salary of $925,000 with $1.925 million in possible bonuses. Vesey was originally drafted by the Predators before his rights were traded to the Buffalo Sabres this off-season. The 23-year-old hit the free agent market earlier this week. He was the most sought after college free agent of the off-season. The Rangers reportedly beat out The Blackhawks, Penguins, Devils, Islanders, Maple Leafs, Sabres and Bruins for Vesey's services. Vesey scored 24 goals and 46 points in 33 games with Harvard University last season. There's a very good chance he'll be with the Rangers once the regular season starts.

According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, The New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks are the finalists for Jimmy Vesey.

Vesey is expected to make a final decision today or tomorrow, but it appears as though the Islanders, Penguins, Maple Leafs, Devils, Sabres and Bruins are all out of the mix. Of course, things can change in the next few hours. The 23-year-old scored 24 goals and 46 points in 33 games with Harvard University last season.

There won't be a Jimmy Vesey announcement on Thursday.

Vesey is the top available college free agent. There are seven to eight teams in the mix for his services, but his agent Peter Fish told WEEI that no final decision will be made today. "No decision today," Fish said in a text to WEEI.com, adding that the player was "just taking everything in from the past couple of days and trying to digest and sort through."

Jimmy Vesey has met with all the teams on his short list and he'll discuss his options with his camp on Thursday.

This has been the plan all along. Earlier in the week, Vesey's agent, Peter Fish, told the Associated Press that his client wouldn't make a final decision before Friday. The teams on Vesey's short list are the Rangers, Devils, Islanders, Maple Leafs, Bruins, Blackhawks and Penguins.

John Tavares was part of the Islanders' pitch to free agent forward Jimmy Vesey.

Tavares tried convincing Vesey that he'd be a perfect fit in Brooklyn. "I really believe in our team and I'm sure they want to show him why we're the best fit for him and how he can impact our team and make us better, so we'll see what happens and if we're lucky enough we'll be able to get an impact player like him," Tavares told ESPN.com. Vesey's camp has already said that a final decision won't be made before Friday.

According to CSN New England's Joe Haggerty, the Boston Bruins will be the last team to talk to free agent Jimmy Vesey.

Having the last word doesn't guarantee the Bruins will get Vesey, but it certainly doesn't hurt their chances. Vesey met with a number of teams on Tuesday and he'll likely have a few more discussions on Wednesday before his meeting with Boston. Vesey's agent already said that his client wouldn't make a decision before Friday.

The Detroit Red Wings had the opportunity to speak to Jimmy Vesey's camp, but the former Harvard star told them he wants to play closer to home in Boston.

"We did our best," Red Wings assistant GM Ryan Martin said. "We spoke to his agent about depth and opportunity. He said he preferred to play closer to home." That doesn't necessarily mean that Vesey will sign in Boston, but another report suggested that the Bruins would be the final team he'd talk to. The Rangers, Maple Leafs, Devils, Sabres, Penguins and Blackhawks are also realistic options for the 23-year-old.

It sounds like the Pittsburgh Penguins will meet with free agent forward Jimmy Vesey on Tuesday.

Vesey officially became an unrestricted free agent at 12:01 a.m. ET and he'll begin talking to some of the teams that are interested in his services. According to TSN's Darren Dreger, that will include a visit with the Pens at some point today. Yesterday, Dreger reported that the Leafs, Rangers, Devils, Blackhawks, Bruins and Sabres were the front-runners for Vesey's services, but he also added that he'd listen to other teams.
Aug 16 - 7:47 AM

Jimmy Vesey's agent, Peter Fish, told the Associated Press that his client won't be signing a contract before Friday.

Vesey is property of the Buffalo Sabres until midnight tonight, but it doesn't sound like a deal will be struck before then. He'll then become an unrestricted free agent and be free to sign with any team. As of right now, it sounds like the likely landing spots for Vesey are either the Leafs, Rangers, Devils, Blackhawks, Bruins and Sabres.
Aug 15 - 8:00 PM

There are six "strong contenders" for Jimmy Vesey, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

Dreger lists them as: The Maple Leafs, Rangers, Blackhawks, Bruins, Sabres and Devils, but adds that "most teams will call on Tuesday," when Vesey officially becomes an unrestricted free agent. The former Harvard star will likely meet with all the teams on his short-list before making a final decision on where he'll suit up next season.
Aug 15 - 11:57 AM

A veteran NHL scout told the Boston Herald that he believes Jimmy Vesey can play in the NHL right away.

"I think he’s going to be a step-in player into the National Hockey league," said the unnamed scout. "Ultimately, he’ll be a top-six player, given a little time. It’s a big step from where he was to where he’s going. There’s going to be an adjustment for him, but I think he’s going to be a very good player. I think he’ll be a guy who can step into the NHL and play right away. Then, a month at a time, he’ll get better and better — and he’ll keep getting better year by year." Vesey becomes an unrestricted free agent tomorrow and it appears as though he'll be crossing more teams off his list in the near future. The Devils, Sabres, Blackhawks, Maple Leafs, Penguins and Bruins have all been linked to Vesey.

Buffalo is reportedly another push to sign Jimmy Vesey before he can start talking to other teams.

Vesey's camp is having last minute talks with Sabres before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. It was always his intention to listen to other teams, but Buffalo remains in the mix.
Aug 14 - 7:12 PM

Jimmy Vesey is anxious to hear what other teams have to offer when he becomes an unrestricted free agent on Monday.

"Jimmy's, he really is an interesting kid. He has been very quiet about it. He hasn't talked much about it," said agent Peter Fish. "He and I and my other colleague Pete Donatelli, we talk to him maybe every week or so and kind of bounce things off. We've had some good discussions with the Sabres, but it's not something that's talked about every day. I think Jimmy just can't wait to see all the options, hear everybody out and make his decision and then move on." Fish added that people shouldn't believe the rumors about one team being favored over another
