Jimmy Vesey has the Chicago Blackhawks on his short list of teams to talk to when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in August.
"Chicago will be a team we want to talk to on Aug. 15," Vesey's agent Peter Donatelli told Scott Powers of The Athletic. "Chicago will be on the list, but it shouldn't be read as they're ahead of anyone else. He really has no idea where he's going to be. It's going to be up to the teams to sell him. ... Yes, [we have criteria], but we're interested in what the teams say rather than telling the teams what they have to say." Vesey could end up with a top-six spot on the Blackhawks because there is an opening alongside Jonathan Toews. Jul 27 - 6:07 PM

Jimmy Vesey has some interest in signing with the Boston Bruins.

Vesey can't officially become an unrestricted free agent until August 15th, but he has a shortlist of teams that he's interested in playing for and the Bruins are part of it. "I’ve said it all along that Boston is definitely on my list of teams that I’d like to talk to. It’s a team that I’ve rooted for all my life, and it’s a team that I watched win the Stanley Cup in 2011," said Vesey. "I was a huge Joe Thornton fan growing up. He wore No. 19. I wear No. 19. He was my favorite player. I got to know Torey Krug a little bit through playing with him at the world championships last year. So it would be really cool to play with Torey and put on the Bruins jersey. It’s the team that I’ve watched for my whole life." The Buffalo Sabres currently own his exclusive negotiating rights after acquiring him from the Nashville Predators.

Jimmy Vesey has met with the Buffalo Sabres.

Buffalo acquired Vesey's negotiating rights from Nashville back in June, but the college prospect has indicated that he still plans to test the UFA market once he's eligible to on Aug. 15. Even he does that though, that doesn't rule out him signing with Buffalo. "The meeting went very well, I'd have to say," Vesey’s agent, Peter Fish, said. "However, until we sit down with Jimmy and fully digest everything we heard yesterday, I can't really comment on how it might affect Aug. 15th."
Jul 9 - 5:36 AM

Jimmy Vesey still plans on hitting the free agent market.

The Sabres acquired Vesey's rights from the Nashville Predators last month. Although the two sides have had some dialogue, the young forward still plans on exploring all his options. "I’m still going to go to free agency," he said, "and explore all my options." Many believe the Bruins and Maple Leafs are the front-runners for Vesey's services, but we'll only find out when he becomes a free agent on Aug. 15.
Jul 3 - 10:46 AM

Jimmy Vesey's agent, Peter Fish, will meet with Sabres GM Tim Murray at the NHL draft this weekend.

Fish and Peter Donatelli, who also represents Vesey, have maintained that the 2016 Hobey Baker Award winner intends to test the open market on August 15. "I think we'll continue talking to the Sabres before Aug. 15, there's no question about that," he said. "But as of now, the plan is to stay the course."
Jun 21 - 6:28 PM

Jimmy Vesey is friends with Sabres center Jack Eichel.

They are playing on the same summer league team in Foxborough, Mass and they were members of Team USA's bronze-medal winning squad in the 2015 World Championship. The Sabres acquired the rights to Vesey from Nashville on Monday in exchange for a third-round pick. Buffalo will try to convince him to sign with them. If Vesey does agree to terms with the Sabres then he could open 2016-17 on a line with Eichel and Sam Reinhart.
Jun 21 - 8:48 AM

Jimmy Vesey still plans to test the open market, according to his agent.

"In our opinion, the only thing that has happened is now the Sabres have stepped into the shoes of Nashville for exclusive rights [to negotiate] until Aug. 15," said Vesey's agent Peter Donatelli. "However, at this time, it doesn't change Jimmy Vesey's intention to become a free agent on Aug. 15." Buffalo just acquired the rights to Vesey from Nashville for a third-round draft pick and they will look to change his mind before he can start talking to other teams.
Jun 20 - 6:28 PM

Buffalo has acquired the rights to Jimmy Vesey from Nashville in exchange for a third-round pick.

The pick is the 76th overall choice in the 2016 NHL Draft, which originally belonged to Minnesota. Buffalo is taking a chance here as Vesey can sign with anyone on August 15 as an unrestricted free agent. They are expected to offer him a top-six spot in the lineup.
Jun 20 - 5:02 PM

Jimmy Vesey might end up signing with the New York Rangers.

Although the Nashville Predators drafted Vesey in 2012, he's eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on August 15th. In addition to the Rangers, Boston and Toronto have also been cited as possible destinations for the 23-year-old forward. He had 24 goals and 46 points in 33 games with Harvard University in 2015-16.
Jun 6 - 7:38 AM

Jimmy Vesey will graduate from Harvard University on May 26th.

He plans to work out in Foxborough to prepare for his first pro training camp and he'll become an unrestricted free agent on August 15th. "Once we get closer to the date, we'll definitely be looking at rosters, prospect pools, and talent," Vesey said. "I'm definitely someone who would like to stay on top of that and have a good idea of what I want to do in August." Ties to Boston and Toronto make them the favorites to land the 2016 Hobey Baker Award winner, but he will have other teams interested in bringing him aboard.
May 14 - 3:46 PM

Jimmy Vesey talked about what is looking at to determine where he wants to sign.

"I'll look at what a team has in terms of NHL roster, and also what it has in the prospect pool," Vesey said. "I'll also be looking at the coaches and what style of play is going to fit me the best. The city, definitely. There's a lot that's going to go into it. I'm excited about it, and I can't wait to see where I'm going to end up." The Massachusetts native stated that Boston will be on his list, but he will have just about every NHL team interested in his services.
May 10 - 2:14 PM

Jimmy Vesey has won the 2016 Hobey Baker Award as the best player in college hockey for Harvard University.

Vesey posted 24 goals and 36 points in 33 games this season, which ironically was not his best campaign. It was in 2014-15 where he scored 32 goals and 58 points in 37 games were his high water marks. It will be interesting to see where the soon-to-be 23-year-old signs this summer.
Apr 8 - 7:20 PM

Nashville GM David Poile hasn't given up trying to sign Jimmy Vesey even though the prospect plans to test free agency.

"The opportunity remains very good here for him in Nashville, and I'm going to continue to try and see whether we can persuade him to change his mind," Poile said. "I clearly believe that Jimmy's received bad advice and bad counsel. A player usually goes to free agency in order to increase his leverage and benefit financially, and that will not be the case here because whoever he signs with he's going to get less of a deal on August 15th than he could get from the Predators today. And he's going to sign for an extra year at the same money." If he goes to free agency then he can pick which team he plays for though.
Mar 29 - 9:35 AM

It sounds as though Jimmy Vesey wants to become an unrestricted free agent.

Vesey was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators, but he can become an unrestricted free agent if he doesn't sign with them by Aug. 15. The hot rumor is that Vesey will hit the free agent market so that he can join his father (scout) and brother (prospect) in the Leafs organization.
Mar 28 - 8:52 PM

Jimmy Vesey's NCAA career with Harvard has ended, so Nashville will meet with him in the coming days to try to work out an entry-level contract.

The Predators have until Aug. 15 to sign Vesey or he can test the open market as a free agent. Nashville is the only team that can offer him immediate NHL playing time, but several other teams will be in the hunt for his services if he chooses not to sign. Vesey, who was a third-round pick in 2012, scored 80 goals in 128 games with Harvard.
