Connor Carrick has been sent down to the minors.

Carrick scored a goal in three games with Washington. It was impressive that he managed to make the jump from the OHL straight to the NHL after a successful training camp, but now he'll get some seasoning in the minors.

Connor Carrick looks like he will start the 2013-14 with the Washington Capitals.

The 19-year-old was a fifth round pick in 2012 but has been so impressive that he will start the season as the Capitals seventh defenseman. He had 44 points and 79 penalty minutes with Plymouth of the OHL but he is eligible to play in the AHL this season. If he is sent down, it is still quite an accomplishment for a teenage fifth round pick.

Connor Carrick doesn't have to clear waivers to be sent down to the minors and he could play in the OHL, but he has received plenty of praise during Washington's training camp.

"He's had an outstanding camp. He's been really really good. Very smart, very intelligent player," GM George McPhee said earlier this week. "Poised, zips the puck around, finds people, plays hard. He's a really good player." His contract situation will probably prevent him from making the team, but it is possible that he could stick around.

Connor Carrick may be heading for the Capitals farm team in Hershey rather than going back to Plymouth of the OHL.

Carrick has been very impressive in camp and is still with the Capitals when everyone thought he would have been sent back to the OHL by now. "I'm going to do whatever they think's best for my development," Carrick said. "My goal is to play for the Caps, so they're the Capitals so whatever they say carries weight. I'll be put in a position to succeed no matter where I go. That's what I'm happy about." Carrick will not have any fantasy relevance for at least a few years.

Carrick was picked by Washington in the fifth round of the 2012 draft. He is playing in his first season of OHL competition, where he has six goals and 20 points in 36 contests, after spending the previous two years with the U.S. National Development Team.
