The Buffalo Sabres are the only team without a win on home ice.
The Sabres own a 0-8-1 record in their own arena and they are 3-7-0 on the road. "We've played a lot better on the road. That's just finding the right ingredients," said coach Ron Rolston. "At times here, we try to make better plays for the crowd and play to that whereas on the road, we really don't care. It's a road game and if we make a mess of it, we try to find success any way we can. And that's going to have to be our mentality at home." Buffalo GM Darcy Regier was pleased with the assets he acquired by trading star forward Thomas Vanek to the New York Islanders.

"It was a deal that has been worked on off and on for a while," he said. "It was something that we felt we had to do. Our focus is on trying to acquire assets, in this case draft picks, that are going to allow us to continue improving. I don't love where we are. I love what we're doing, and I believe in the direction we're going." The Sabres got a first-round pick in 2014 and a second-round choice in 2015, which could be used or moved to land other players. Buffalo also got forward Matt Moulson in the deal, but there's already talk that the pending UFA could be moved prior to the trade deadline for more picks or prospects.

Sabres GM Darcy Regier didn't think his team would be doing this poorly nearly a month into the season.

Buffalo has a 2-10-1 record after their 3-2 defeat on Saturday. Not much was expected of the Sabres going into the 2013-14 campaign, but they've pushed the boundaries of just how bad an NHL team can be. They've averaging just 1.46 goals per game and have only scored in the first period once. At some point, you have to figure they'll enjoy a hot streak that will make their record look somewhat better, but they certainly aren't likely to make the playoffs this season.

The Buffalo Sabres have been outscored a remarkable 13-1 in the first period this season.

They allowed two goals to open Saturday's game en route to a 4-2 defeat to the Colorado Avalanche. "It's getting to be pretty ridiculous the way we're starting games," Tyler Myers said. "It's unacceptable. It's embarrassing." Buffalo is just 1-8-1 this season and while logic says that no NHL team can maintain that abysmally low winning percentage, we certainly don't expect much from the Sabres this season.

The Buffalo Sabres have opened the 2013-14 campaign with a 0-6-1 record.

The team can set the franchise record for longest winless streak to start a season if they pick up another defeat against the New York Islanders on Tuesday night. The Sabres have seven goals in seven games and they'll be hard pressed to win games doing that. Buffalo outshot an opponent for the first time in Monday's loss to Minnesota by a 23-20 margin.

Buffalo's struggles continued Thursday night with a 4-1 home loss to Columbus.

The Sabres fell to 0-4-1 on the year and the team is within two games of matching their longest winless streak to open a season. It doesn't get any easier for them because they play the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night. Thomas Vanek and Cody Hodgson are the only players producing and they need support.

Buffalo has recorded two goals in three contests for an NHL-worst average of 0.67 per game to open the 2013-14 season.

The Sabres also haven't registered a power-play goal despite getting 13 opportunities. Buffalo needs to get their top-six forward group more engaged offensively; Cody Hodgson, Drew Stafford and Tyler Ennis have average fewer than 1.7 shots per game. They will look to get their first win of the season Tuesday when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Buffalo Sabres were woeful with the man advantage in Wednesday's loss to Detroit.

They went 0-for-7 on the power play in the contest and failed to cash in on a pair of two-man advantages. "We didn't move the puck well," forward Thomas Vanek said. "We didn't make any plays. We were just trying to blast them through people. No crisp passing. It's something we'll have to work on."

The Buffalo Sabres will announce the team's next captain before their season opener on Wednesday.

It will be interesting to see who they pick. Steve Ott and Thomas Vanek are both regarded as strong candidates, but both are in the final season of their respective contracts. Appointing Vanek as the team captain would run counter to the rumors that the team is likely to trade him before the deadline.

Buffalo Sabres coach Ron Rolston has been fined by the NHL for his player selection on Sunday.

More specifically, for having John Scott on the ice after a scrap between Corey Tropp and Jamie Devane. Scott then tried to fight Phil Kessel, which resulted in a line brawl.

The Sabres made a second round of cuts Friday.

The team assigned the following players to Rochester of the AHL:Colin Jacobs, Connor Knapp, Alex Lepkowski, Nathan Lieuwen, Eric Locke, Matt MacKenzie, Andrey Makarov, Johnathon McGuire, Jonathan Parker, Kevin Sundher, Shawn Szydlowski and Frederick Roy. In addition Buffalo placed Nick Crawford on waivers with the hope of him clearing so that he could also be assigned to the Amerks. Brady Austin and Peter Trainor have been returned to their junior clubs. None of these players was expected to make any fantasy impact in 2103-14.

The Buffalo Sabres are expected to announce their first round of cuts on Sunday.

It would be surprising if anyone close to being NHL ready is on Sunday's list. It should primarily be players that are being returned to their junior squads. Still, as teams begin to trim down, the competition gets fiercer.

Ron Rolston will not name a new captain for the Buffalo Sabres in the immediate future.

"Getting our new staff in here, we've got a couple new members that need to really get a good feel for the players too," Rolston said. "So we're going to let things play out early in camp and then see how it pans out." Jason Pominville served as the team's captain until he was traded last season. Rolston doesn't have a problem giving the 'C' to a player in the final season of his contract, so Steve Ott and Thomas Vanek are still in the running.

According to a source, former Niagara University assistant Jerry Forton has been added to Buffalo's coaching staff as an assistant.

He is an 18-year collegiate coaching veteran and he worked as an assistant last season at Harvard.

Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier said Tuesday he doesn’t expect to make a big splash in free agency.

Regier prefers to use the open market to find complimentary pieces for the team’s younger core. Regier did say they plan to contact Danny Briere, who was a co-captain in Buffalo before signing with the Flyers as a free agent. The Sabres’ offseason likely depends on what happens with Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller, who are both being shopped in trade talks but don’t appear on the verge of going anywhere at the moment. It could be a very interesting offseason in Buffalo.
